What is stucco framing?

Stucco is a cement-like product applied to the exterior of a home in multiple layers, varying in texture depending on application. It can be used over masonry or wood frames and is traditionally made of cement, lime, and sand. Newer stucco systems, such as acrylic, insulated, and crack suppression, address cracking and other issues. Stucco is popular in the Southern and Western U. S. and the Midwest, but is expanding to other regions as newer products address its limitations.

Can you put board and batten over stucco?

Homeowners often ask if Hardie board can be installed over stucco, but the answer is yes. The best method involves installing strapping (structural wood framing) through the existing stucco to the studs, allowing Hardie boards and trims to be nailed to the strapping. Strapping over stucco is usually less expensive than full removal, but there are exceptions. When considering stucco removal versus installation over strapping, consider the following factors:

  1. Existing stucco is usually a level surface, making it easier to nail Hardie boards and trims to the strapping.

How to transition from stucco to wood siding?

A smooth transition from stucco to siding is achievable with an actionable plan. It is essential to investigate underlying issues, install insulation, replace stucco with a durable siding material, consider all available styles, and coordinate trim in advance. The longer homeowners delay this transition, the higher the risk factors become, as visible damage can advance quickly with traditional stucco siding. To avoid this issue, get prepared for a successful stucco to siding overhaul that can beautify your home and enhance its value.

Traditional stucco needs to be in immaculate condition to be considered attractive and desirable on modern homes. However, this requires significant ongoing maintenance, including time, money, and energy, which most homeowners don’t have. Without flawless maintenance, a traditional stucco exterior may start showing signs of deterioration, which can be ugly.

How to update stucco exterior?

Stucco is a popular building material used for exterior coverings, and can be changed without replacing it. To do this, inspect the stucco for major cracks and issues, pressure wash the stucco, repair small holes and cracks with acrylic caulk, use a waterproofer to seal and protect the cleaned and repaired stucco, and apply the chosen paint. Stucco is made from an aggregate, a binder, and water, with the binder typically being Portland cement, lime, or gypsum.

The curing process begins when water is added, and the mixture changes from a thick paste to a solid surface. This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to achieve a professional finish on stucco walls, ensuring a smooth and durable finish.

Can you frame over stucco?

Hardie board can be installed over stucco, but the best method involves installing strapping through the existing stucco to the studs. This allows Hardie boards and trims to be nailed to the strapping, a level and structural fastening surface. Strapping over stucco is usually less expensive than full removal, but there are exceptions. When considering stucco removal versus installation over strapping, consider the wall condition. Rock-dash stucco, a durable exterior, can sometimes trap moisture against the wall sheathing due to its thick cement, which prevents wall drying out and can lead to rot in the framing or sheathing.

How do you seal between wood and stucco?

Polyurethane-based caulking is a popular choice for areas where stucco joins other materials like windows, doors, or wood. It provides a watertight seal and can be applied to various building materials. Silicone caulking is not preferred due to its difficulty in working with stucco and blend. Rubberized caulking hardens onto stucco, creating a strong buffer that protects it from water damage, making it a popular choice for commercial buildings.

What is stucco molding?

Exterior Stucco Moldings, also known as wall bands, are designed to frame and separate sections of a wall, often used along building joints or to fill in plain space. Decoramould’s moldings are made from solid material, providing crisp, straight lines. They can be installed during the initial construction phase or added later as a renovation, allowing for a more flexible design process. Styorfoam-core stucco moldings can be installed during the initial construction phase or added later as a renovation, allowing for more time to find the perfect fit and reducing the financial outlay. However, some design mistakes can occur in a rushed state, such as being over-conscious of cost or selecting a molding too large, which can overpower window and door trim.

How do you attach wood siding to stucco?

To install siding, start by installing corner, window, and door trims at the bottom of the existing stucco wall. Install siding strips to overlap the previous one, stopping and checking after each row to maintain a true horizontal line. Insert nails every 16 inches into furring strips, and place ends next to the wall, window, and door frame edges. Measure each piece of siding to minimize gaps. Once siding is installed, proceed to the final details of the project.

How to attach exterior trim to stucco?

Position the trim pieces around your window, pressing them firmly onto the stucco using a level. Secure the trim with fasteners, following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Use high-quality exterior caulk to fill gaps and joints between the trim and stucco, smoothing it with a caulking tool or finger. Allow for expansion by leaving a small gap between the trim and stucco (about 1/8 inch) to accommodate temperature changes.

What is wood frame stucco?

Stucco is a masonry concrete product utilized for the construction of load-bearing structures. It is not a construction type in and of itself, but rather a covering material applied over wood frames or masonry.

Can you stucco over wood trim?

  1. Add 15-pound roofing felt to the wood, starting at the bottom and overlapping each top edge.
  2. Use 17 gauge metal netting to cover the roofing felt and help the mortar adhere properly. Cut and nail it over the felt using galvanized roofing nails.
  3. Add a scratch coat, a large batch of mortar mix, to the felt and metal netting. This first coat, or scratch coat, will give a firm base for the stucco, between ¼ inch and ½ inch thick. Work the mortar firmly into the netting using a trowel, and the mortar should stick out through the netting, acting as a solid base to hold the drying mortar in place.

In summary, the process of applying stucco involves adding felt, using netting, and applying a scratch coat to create a solid base for the mortar.

  • Not a lot of articles out there on stucco molding ; kudos to you for making one. Did the original molding rot and if so was the cause addressed? In any case, given window trim’s propensity to rot, it would have been better to pre-paint the sub-strip of moulding on all sides before installing. I understand that pre-painting ( and waiting for it to dry) adds a cost that many customers would not be willing to pay — especially if it turns a 1 day job into a 2. DIYers though should definitely take the time to do so.

  • That top piece molding on corner looks destroyed, my home was built in late 50s I replaced it once I replaced the original one few years back there are different sizes I used the biggest one I could find but I did best I could to fit it there is yet very small gaps from stucco to edge of molding so debating whether not to replace it again to try find better molding being repainting the house & want everything to fit in snug I know I will yet have to use some stucco caulking that home Depot sells but finding the exact molding is a run around to different stores.

  • I needed to see this. Very helpful. I’m at the stage of placing the black paper and wasn’t sure if it goes on before or after the trim is up. My issue is the underneath construction is a bit messed up with huge gaps, so I filled the gaps with insulation foam and cut it to level with the door jam as best I could. I bought the pvc brick moulding for the door trim and was told to use adhesive. Question: Will it be ok to put the adhesive on the paper and will it hold well enough? I only have the small edge of the door trim that is firm. The foam is of course not firm but the paper will cover it well enough. I’m thinking that I should still put brad nails to catch the edge of the door jam so it’s at least on something solid and secure. After the trim is on I’ll calk around the door edge to fill in the gaps and secure it from leaks. I understand I should use a polyurethane calking. Is that the right stuff to use or should I use silicon? All of this is my challenge. What are your thoughts?

  • Hi Kirk . I am hooked on your articles. You have sparked my interest in stucco, waterproofing, lath, plaster. You are a master at communicating your knowledge. They also have the ability to communicate their knowledge. What you do is priceless.

  • Hi Maria, Jason here. Yes, the key is the grooved part of the wooden stucco stop. With these pieces we dont actually build the key, It comes pre formed. We put paper underneath our stucco stops on the side here because we could. It is not required. With the poly ken material underneath I could have put my paper into the keys on the sides and fused it with an elastomeric caulking, but instead I put it underneath and fused it. Both are waterproof and valid. Hope this helps, Thanks for perusal!
