How To Drill A Hole In A House’S Outer Wall?

This DIY guide provides step-by-step instructions on drilling holes through exterior walls, including the removal of siding and using a hacksaw or reciprocating saw with a metal-cutting blade. The guide covers various aspects of drilling through exterior walls, including determining the location, safety measures, post-drilling tasks like cleanup, and using the right tool, drill bit, and technique.

To make a 6 inch hole for a vent in an exterior brick wall, use a masonry chisel to chip out the mortar and pull out a couple of bricks. Drilling through the brick with a long, special direct system (SDS) masonry drill bit is the easiest way to feed cable or pipe through a brick wall. Knowing how to cut bricks to size is necessary for building brick patios, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, pathways, or walls.

For a round cutout, use a hole saw bit the size of the ducting using a 1/2″ driil that is heavy duty enough to cut it. Drill holes just inside the mark and carefully chip with a chisel to prevent repair. Use escution and silicone if needed.

When drilling holes, drill holes just inside the mark and carefully chip with a chisel to prevent repair. Use escution and silicone if needed. Cut vinyl with a sharp razor knife, drill holes in wood, and tap the remaining wood piece out with a hammer. Drill using a 1/4″ masonary drill bit and use green rawl plug to push into the holes. Screw the screws into the holes.

For circular holes, use a set of hole-cutters. Most people would use an electric jigsaw, but plasterboard handsaws can be purchased.

  • You can actually run either way no problem, but it’s easier to cut vinyl with reverse teeth since it melts instead of chews, same reason we reverse our blades on our table saw when cutting soffit sections. Also a tip, when using a hole saw in reverse it acts like a flywheel and can potentially unchuck from the drill when you let go of the trigger so always re tighten when doing multiple holes

  • 🙂 Three handed? Three handed???? With a masonry pilot? Of course, when I taught myself to do it two handed with no pilot bit, the space behind the sheet rock was wouldn’t allow the wing to work right. 250 lb 6’5″ tenant didn’t manage to rip two displaced washers out, so I guess close enough is good enough.

  • Im trying to run duct work from my dryer through an already made hole, it looks like this is a two layer wall and the inner hole is smaller than the outer one by 2ish inches (its also very uneven). This is an older home my parents recently bought. What could i use to safely widen the hole to be even so the 4in duct work can go through properly?

  • Thank you for wearing safety gear and explaining safety measures. I clicked on, then quickly turned off several articles with people sawing through brick walls with no PPE. If you don’t have the sense to protect your own body, how can we trust you to properly do such dangerous work? Every worker in any job should be given the tools to perform their work safely so they can return how in the same condition they were in when they left for work.
