Interior and exterior doors are two types of doors that differ in size, construction, materials, security features, and designs. Exterior doors are typically larger in size and have a hollow core for maximum temperature control and security features. They are typically lighter and thinner than interior doors, often featuring a hollow core.
Indoor doors are typically narrower and thinner, with a typical exterior door measuring 1 3/4″ in width. The standard size of an interior door is 30″ to 32″ inches, while an exterior door is required to be at least 36″ inches. Interior doors separate rooms within homes, while exterior doors divide the inside of the home from the outside world.
Interior doors are typically smaller, usually around 30″ wide, while exterior doors are slightly larger, around 36″ wide. Interior doors are typically the same on both sides, while exterior doors have decorative panels on only one side. The glass of exterior doors is typically the same on both sides.
To determine the correct exterior door, it is essential to know both the desired handing and whether it is inswing or outswing. To order the correct door, stand outside the room while it’s closed, and use this guide to determine the difference between a left- and right-hand door. Understanding these factors can help you make an informed decision when purchasing an interior or exterior door.

Thank-you for your superb article addressing this murky point. Your metric of standing with your back to the hinges in order to determine handing seems like a stroke of genius compared with other approaches. There seems to be so much confusion and obfuscation online regarding the difference between left handed and right handed locks. I have just ordered a replacement lock to replace a worn out lock on a door which swings outwards and has its hinges on the right hand side as observed from outside the door. I have ordered a Left handed mortise lock to replace this lock, if you could confirm that I have ordered the right lock that would be GREATLY appreciated. 👍
There is a muuuuuuch easier way, I am a superintendent that came up as a commercial carpenter and have hung and ordered countless doors. Never failed me. Stand on the outside of the room facing the door, whichever side the hinges are on is the swing….. then determine if it swings into or out of the room. Boom done. No need to go through all the nonsenses.
