The maximisation of natural light was the selling point for me. From the living room window to reflecting it on the kitchen cupboards and even the frosted bathroom door, it makes the apartment feel much more airy and bright. The arches too give a wonderful cozy feeling. The table doubling up as an artwork was genius! The open space in front of the apartment is a huge plus. Didn’t understand the piece of glass that was hung over the sofa, it reflected the TV. What was it?
Looks very spacious. “Hiding” everything in white and maximizing the living room was a good call. Not enough storage space though. Having a separate office space even if it’s really really small means A LOT. But everything is a trade off. If it fits the intended use, it’s a 10/10. It really feels big and spacious.
This is honestly one of the best if not the best design I’ve seen on this website. It’s very elegant, extremely smart and unlike the other interiors often shown here, it’s didn’t require construction of some elaborate, custom-built all-in-one piece of furniture. I bet you could replicate what they’ve done on a budget if you wanted to.
The white interior makes this place look super clean, neat, and easy to the eyes but the arches design definitely make it feel more homey instead of feeling like a room no one lives in. I probably would have installed some kind of partition between the bedroom and the living room though, since people might come to the house and all. Favorite is definitely the bathroom, from the door design, to the walls, everything is just perfect.
This woman is not just an architect, she’s a pure artist! The idea with the “Murphy table” is insane! One of the greatest solutions I have EVER seen for a small space! Absolutely wonderful and as many have already commented, the flat looks much bigger than 33 sqm! Very light and airy. I am obsessed with the bathroom door letting the light in, it’s so narrow and beautiful, I would get it for myself in a heartbeat. This is artistry. Thank you for showing us.
One of the best of this series so far. As an Interior Architect and Interior Photographer, I can really appreciate the thought that has gone into truly maximising the space for THIS particular clients living needs, and not pandering to interior trends. It’s a clean elegant design that cleverly combines open living with modular. This is an apartment I would love to live in..Well Done!!!
After living with a white kitchen for the last 12 years, I now have a horror of the constant, daily cleaning they need, especially the vertical surfaces. It’s amazing how much dust, grime and fingerprints they attract. The bathroom is divine, the tall cupboards are a necessity. Lovely conversion, beautiful floors.
A fold out dining table is one of the few foldable furniture pieces that feels practical for the typical living space. This “Murphy table” is a beautiful use of space while bringing art and a personal touch into the space. More generally I love the styling of this apartment, the arch theme, the lighting, and really achieving that sense of height is making me swoon. What a way to kick off North American articles! Looking forward to more 🙂
This home is not only beautiful, it’s realistic. Sometimes small homes can get too gimmicky or have too many contraptions that are cool but lose their shine after a while. The murphy table they have is cute and functional. Even if they have that table down most of the time, it’s not in the way and still looks lovely. I think a natural light-wood towel rack in the bathroom would have looked nicer than the chrome one, and it would have tied the bathroom design to the rest of the home a little better. However, I can acknowledge that it might be easier to maintain chrome in a bathroom compared to wood, and it’s probably not too hard to take down if they change their mind later on. With so much white, this place could have easily been boring, but the designers did a fantastic job at making it serene and peaceful without being washed-out or sterilized-looking. The light-wood accents and the arches really helped make it look clean and open, but still be architecturally interesting. Overall, just a beautiful home.
This is one of my favorite spaces featured on the website because it feels like a real home to me. I love the Murphy table and I love the bathroom door. It has such an elegant shape. As others said, I feel like there is a lack of storage, but when you don’t have a lot of space you naturally tend to just not buy so much stuff. I just wished it had more color, maybe just a bight rug
I finished my drinking career and got sober in a 19th floor apt similarly laid out. Its entrance was between the bath and kit in original plan, with no bump out, and under 300SF. I loved the views and, like this apt, that secure feeling of being in a tower. I appreciate the fact that yours has everything without any transformer feel. Just beautiful.
Thank you for featuring North America! I loved the table and bench solution. I wonder where they keep their excess home items (e.g. where are the extra two dining chairs), their extra toiletries (medications, hair and makeup products, etc.), and their clutter for “activities” (outdoors, music, etc.). This is a really beautiful space! I lived in a place this small for a few months. This architect has done a much better job of using that square footage! Thanks for showing us, NTS!
Please if any designers from London see this can you please bring your ideas here, especially to central London there are so many nice building that are unfortunately being ripped down and could have been designed like this. This very clean and refreshing, the lighting is amazing and space has been thought out very well, I really appreciate such greatness.
Love the design of this space, one of my favorites! Feels spacious, bright, cozy and super efficient. The murphy table idea is so brilliant, but having two screws to mount/unmount the leg can be kind of tedious whenever you need to access it multiple times a day. You might even risk loosing the screws. Some sort of built-in locking mechanism to latch/unlatch the leg would really make using the murphy table feel fun and effortless. Didn’t get to see how the leg was stored, but I imagine it being done with a metal rod inside the leg to place under the bench with magnets.
The use of curves in the arch and other elements is a nice feature and I do think the demarcation of space was noticeably improved by moving the kitchen out in line with the extent of the lounge(might have been a nice touch if the bench curved into the bedroom) but I do think there’s such a thing as too much white regardless of how it make a space feel lighter and this apartment is a perfect example.
I love how this apartment is really easy to clean. It also has a very reasonable amount of storage space, especially in the kitchen. I like that the living room is equally suitable for conversation with guests as it is suitable as a TV room. It is a small space but perfectly big enough to entertain guests. There are very little built-in features, which makes for a less rigid space. Other designs often have so much built-in furniture that everything is screwed into place and you can’t move anything around as your needs change.
Love the all white/natural light combo. Love the rounded edges and doors, even in the small key shelves at the entryway. Full height storage is a huge bonus I bet they appreciated when downsizing. Swapping the kitchen and sleeping always seems to work well in studios. Love the Murphy table, I’ve seen this in lots of tiny homes, but the bench seat, that becomes a side table when not in use… this is great and makes this work. Yes, love it all!!
Beautiful and well thought out renovation. It’s minimal, light, and airy. I know this building and neighborhood. It’s a great location. The Museum of Natural History is across the street and you’re half a block off of Central Park. Seeing how there is limited closet space I was surprised that she took out the linen closet that was next to the bathroom in the original floor plan. Also, for me personally, I would prefer to have some way to create privacy between the living room and the bedroom in case one person stays up perusal TV and the other wants to go to bed. Otherwise, super well done.
Love it. I almost choked on my breakfast when she opened the bathroom door! 🤭 Relocation of the kitchen and the surprising amount of space in the bedroom is fantastic. The view from the bedroom too with the light pouring in is also perfect. The only adjustment I’d make is the table — instead of unscrewing the leg, was there a way to incorporate into the frame? Maybe width-wise and height didn’t work, but having a separate piece makes it less appealing to put up or take down. Overall, what a great remodel, and agree, if you can repurpose instead of tear down and rebuild, that’s the way to go!
For thr money this reno cost they should have made the foldong table have legs that drop down and fold up. They can do this with murphy beds and this just a smaller version. Likely to make it work youd have lose the curved shape. Having to screw and unscrew and then put away or tske out this table leg as it is now is just lazy design or stupidity. Also this apartment does not looked lived in or they toom out a lot of clutter before the article. The kitchen is way too bare of items that people would leave out if someone actually cooked there.
The architect should win an award for this apartment! The practical layout married with cohesive design elements is wonderful. The bathroom is stunning yet elegant. Love the arches, that door should be copied, it’s beautiful and practical, a great splurge, worth every penny! The TV arch is another design that people should copy, this time much more affordably. More from this architect, please! TFS
I like the idea behind the table, but it really bothers me that the leg detaches and isn’t somehow mythically rigged to stay attached, but rotates to the top of the table when in a locked state. The idea is good but still needed some finessing. The last thing Id want is to have to unattach and reattach a table leg all day. I’d want that space open for yoga stretches in the morning, down for breakfast and some work, up for guests in the evening for example. It is too much of a usability pain. However, I really appreciate that the tv can be viewed head-on and is large enough to enjoy. Most TVs are small and at an odd angle in this website. Like at that point mount a projector or something, but in this case, they did well.
I like these articles but hearing architects speak in these articles has made me realize that many are full of themselves. That they are carrying the torch for the world and cities they help create. I worked in architecture and design for many moons, maybe I was one of the rare few who were not full of it? I left that practice years ago because most have ZERO understanding of what it takes to build. Especially in this computer CAD era. The art of architecture is completely gone yet the pompous attitude of many architects remains.
😵 W T…? What the hardware store was having a going out of business white paint sale??! You practically get snow blindness living in that apartment! Why didn’t you just put a counter across from the sink and put bar stools about 3 underneath it?? It sure would have been better than that one legged, hinged attached to the wall ironing board that you fold úp to the wall and try to pass off as a table! (And that ain’t no new ideal either that’s as old as dirt!) You need at least three colors to warm up the place because it is so cold looking the North Pole is warmer looking than this place
This is definitely one of the best from this website. The layout is very practical and the apartment is generally very bright for an apartment this size. I like that the bedroom is somehow separated, that way it seems like a 1-bedroom apartment instead of a studio. And the frosted glass door is smart! I once stayed at an airbnb in Barcelona and I noticed that it felt roomy even though the floor area is actually small, and it was because of the ceiling height. This apartment reminded me of that.
Top quality doesn’t ask for plenty of space. In this life someone who has scarce resources and good judgment can live like a king if he desires to do so. Self love and dedication makes wonders. It’s not about money, it’s about how WE choose to live our lives that matters. Living IS a science and requires lots of wits but IS not hard. Everybody can achieve a good sense of it if they dedicate time doing so. This is how we choose to live our lives. It always matters. This is a great example and an inspirational one. Everything requires sacrifices. It pays and always plays well when is done right. This is WHY architecture is FUNDAMENTAL. This is more than a profession. It’s our way of life.
Complimenti
