How To Clean The Interior Of An Enamel Oven?

Clean My Space HQ provides tips on how to clean an enamel Dutch oven, including cleaning the interior and exterior using common household ingredients. To clean enamel oven trays, follow these steps:

  1. Wipe the interior and exterior of the appliance down with a rag or dishcloth.
  2. Check the label of the oven cleaner to ensure it is safe for use on enamel surfaces.
  3. Gather necessary materials like enamel repair kits, mild detergent, and a soft cloth.
  4. Follow these steps for cleaning every part of your oven, from racks to door glass.
  5. Switch off your oven’s power and follow the best way to clean inside and out.
  6. Use a liquid or paste cleaner recommended by the Vitreous Enamel Association for ordinary enamel linings and oven doors.
  7. Use a homemade paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, which is non-toxic and won’t react with enamel.
  8. Spray a 1:1 vinegar to water mixture with a small amount of dish soap to spray the cook top wipe with paper towels.
  9. Rinse the oven cleaner on the bottom and let it sit outside an hour. Rinse again and fill the sink with 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water. Soak about 30 minutes, scrub, and make a paste out of Dawn dish soap and vinegar on the grease.
  10. Scrape off the mess with a plastic putty knife or brush.

Customers have reported issues with using oven cleaner in their enamel coated ovens, but a combination of baking soda and water can create a foaming reaction that helps lift dirt and grease. For stubborn stains on oven interiors, a mixture of white vinegar and baking soda is recommended.

  • This is very helpful and very specific which is important! I cleaned my oven earlier in the year and didn’t get magical results but it was better. I like how you noted to do it more than one time and also to use a razor blade. I also think I will try the zep. I have done the baking soda clean which worked about the same as any other cleaner. I can see by perusal you that technique and timing matter and it’s good to see that effort clearly illustrated! The idea of dish pods for the racks and using a storage tub to soak them is also brilliant! My stove is probably from the early 80’s! It came with the house and is double wide with a proofing oven on the side and a large space in the middle of the burners. It would be hard to find a good replacement!

  • Oven mats, wiping the door after each use, and wiping the interior after I cook something steamy has kept my oven pretty clean for the last 2 years. Wiping the door was a habit I got from my mom. I picked up the mats on a whim at the dollar store and holy cow was that a life changing decision. I started wiping the inside after spilling something once and realizing how easy it was to clean the sides while they were still steamy. Outside of spills, I have not cleaned my oven like this in 2 years.

  • My GE microwave from 2005 finally crapped out. At first youtube.com/post/UgkxO_Bc204MGjxDl87cOKcdgaRhzSqGmv_g I was unsure because I was looking for something with the exact same features. Found it with this one. Interior space cavity was large, but the outside was smaller than my old one. I love the one-button push for 1-6 minutes, and the 30 second add or 30 second start. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I love how you can adjust the power level during cooking. The reviews said it could not be done, but this marked all the other boxes. and happy to say, it does. I can hit 1 minute start, and change the power level from 10 to 5, 30 seconds in, without interruption. my favorite feature!

  • Also do the cleaning in the spring or fall when you can open your windows to ventilate the chemical fumes. After cleaning turn the over way up over 400F and let it dry full ( no more smells or cleaner ) or the next time you turn it on the foul chemical smell will come out of it when family/guests are over.

  • Wow, after perusal the “before” pictures I feel better. My oven barely have any grease, but I want to keep it like brand new. My husband baked the other night and made I mess. I will try that cleaning product, it seems practical. Question, when do you actually use the “self clean” option on your oven? Just curious.

  • Hi Brandon, from a cold and snowy London in England, UK! 🥶 Do you have any tips on how to clean the top part of inside an oven please? In all the articles of “how to clean an oven”, not one of them has ever even mentioned this part. I have mobility problems and find trying to work around the heating element very difficult. Any help hints or tips you may have would be very much appreciated! 😊 Saturday 17th December 2022 – 18:20 GMT

  • THANK YOU! THANK YOU!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 For showing me how to take the door off! Years ago you could just put the oven in the broil position and lift straight up and it would come off. They don’t do that now, so I thought there was no easy way to take the door off. Thank you so much for showing me those latches!

  • Was taught by my mom to take a 9×13 cake pan and put a towel in it, fill with ammonia until the towel is covered. Turn your oven on the lowest setting, let heat up and then turn off. Let it sit overnight and the next morning wipe it out. You can also put you burner grates, rings, etc in a cover pan of ammonia and let it sit overnight and with a green scrubby go over each piece. Have been doing this since the 1980’s and it works like a champ 😊. Dollar Tree sells bottles of ammonia for $1.25 pretty cheap cleaner. You can also take an ammonia soaked towel and lay it on your stove stop and let it set several hours to clean off the brunt on stuff. 😊

  • who let’s their oven look like this ???? We use the baking sheets on the bottom to catch the drips, I believe they are high temp silicone. The racks go outside for a spray and a 3200 psi pressure washer !!!!! That pressure washer is soooooo great to have. Like therapy that always has a positive happy ending. I love the articles on here.

  • Well, you have a new subscriber. 😎 This article is very informative. I can tell you are very efficient and practical with your approach. Ty for making this kind of informative content. This will be a game changer, I cook and clean non stop. So, stuff like this is important and helpful to me. Keep up the good work.

  • I have been using Easy Off Fume Free oven cleaner, and find that it works very well with much less chemical odor. Also, the longer you let it “marinate” on the oven walls, the easier the clean up, 48 hours seems best! If you know the comparison between your Zep and this Easy Off Fume Free, please let me know. Twenty minutes to two hours soak seems too good to be true!

  • Hey Brandon Merry Christmas and Happy New Year I hope it’s a good one hopefully 2023 you will get to 100,000 subscribers that would be amazing you deserve it dude that should be your New Year’s resolution anyway keep up the great work brother and God bless you and your family never forget Jesus loves you

  • Soaking the oven shelves in non bio washing powder and boiling water is more effective than dishwasher pods. You can also make a much more concentrated solution. Leave overnight preferably and then to clean quickly use a metal or abrasive scourer. You don’t need to be concerned about scratching the grill shelves.

  • If your oven has clean function, Use it as it will burn down all the oil Inside the oven, Once the oven is cooled down rinse the rack in water and Use dry or wet clothes to clean all the oil dust which is burned inside the oven. Instead of using all chemicals inside the oven, which you use to cook food later on.

  • I have been looking FOREVER for someome to legit show me how to actually get the oven clean. It keeps getting worse. Every other article i have watched they spray mystery cleaner and then skip to the wiping it off part and its magically cleaned. I’ve tried everything. But this article is exactly what i needed for my oven so thank you very much for all the details. I started following you on your Amazon link.

  • Thank you for the article. I’m doing a trial run deep clean now so I know whether or not I need the end of tenancy cleaning to include oven or if I can do it myself. Currently waiting on my first dwell! Racks etc are in the bath with two tablets. My oven came with a big non-stick baking sheet that slides in like a rack, can that also go into the bath?

  • Man there’s something so contagious about your seemingly genuine excitement about how clean you can get things. That laugh at the end is just 👌🏻👌🏻 Appreciate the oven in this article doesnt have any stove knobs since its a built-in, but do you have any tips for how to tackle those? Especially the white ones once they’ve started to yellow? I’m aware retrobrighting is a thing but I can’t justify building a retrobrighting setup purely to clean some oven knobs haha

  • Wonderful article! Thank you! Okay how did you clean that light bulb on the left because I am worried about touching it for fear of it breaking. And also the ceiling below the broil element? How did you clean that? I have a non-removable element on the bottom of the stove – how do I clean around that? Can I accidentally get a little spray on the element? I’m scared!!!

  • Ok. I’ve used the oven spray, which I then covered in cling film over night. I also removed 2 of the glass layers of the oven door, as well as the insulation rubber around the door. To reach the top properly, I might remove the door. Use a good face mask and protection goggles, if you have them, when spraying that chemical acid destruction.

  • I had an old Tappan stove for years….era 1960s? The inside of the oven was lined with liftaway panels. Once a year, I dismantelled the oven and placed the panels and racks outside on the lawn. I sprayed everything with oven cleaner and left it it to soak in the sun for a while. A quick rinse with the garden hose and everything sparkled! Great oven design!!!

  • what about if oven has a self-cleaning function? would you choose that before using any harsh cleaner? would you try that first and if necessary THEN use the Zep? the downside of the self-cleaning function is that it may get smokey or sort of smelly in house while everything is being burnt off the oven…I believe you need to do it on a day that you can keep a few windows open to air out the house.

  • One VERY useful thing you didn’t mention, and maybe you didn’t know … if you cover the entire bottom of the oven with tin foil, there’s very little mess when it’s time to clean. Easy, cheap, and very effective. No one should have to vacuum an oven. How would you ever get the grease out of the vacuum? I’ve been doing this for years and I only have to deep clean my oven once a year, or even 2 depending on how much use it gets. All I have to do is change the foil now and then when it’s necessary.
