How To Clean The Inside Of A Dishwasher?

Discover how to clean a dishwasher’s interior using DIY options like vinegar and baking soda. Avoid using bleach and instead, use vinegar, baking soda, and affresh® dishwasher cleaner to maintain the cleanliness of your dishwasher.

Add 2 cups of vinegar to the bottom of an empty dishwasher and run it on an energy-efficient setting. Stop the dishwasher halfway through the cycle for 10 minutes. Wipe down the inside with a sponge and a water and vinegar solution to remove old food and other caked-on substances.

Open the dishwasher door and dip a small toothbrush in hot, soapy water to scrub around the door. Vinegar helps break down grime, dissolve mineral deposits and water spots, and kill bacteria while baking soda eliminates odors and scrubs away food residues and stains.

Food scraps, grease, and soap build up inside a dishwasher over time, making it smelly and less efficient. Experts recommend a monthly deep cleaning or biweekly one if you use the machine regularly. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into a glass measuring cup or other dishwasher-safe container and place upright in the lower rack. Run a normal cycle with the heat dry option turned off to clean the inside of your dishwasher. Do not use detergent.

For extra freshening, sprinkle a cup of baking soda after running the vinegar cycle. If your dishwasher is giving you a patchy wash, use vinegar, baking soda, and a toothbrush to fix it yourself. Use the Finish in-wash cleaner on the first of every month and run an empty cycle with a cup of vinegar in the top rack. Run the sink tap water hot for a deep clean. Citric acid may be used in plastic and stainless steel interior dishwashers to help clean the interior.

  • wows. This worked unbelievably well. My DW was stinky and the trap was covered with black grease. i didn’t think i could clean something that was so disgusting. I did remove the black stuff by hand (vomit) then i used your vinegar trick. Wow. Smells better already. I also ran the Baking soda, but not sure what that will do. The vinegar i think took care of the grease. i am now subscribed to your website. I appreciate that you talk fast and that your articles are short.

  • I did this once. See dishwasher was new has a wire issue but tried using it an it wouldn’t run the entire cycle. So didn’t use it an didn’t know it molded inside. Well clean mold out an closed it back up. So now it’s fixed and used it a few time an it still got that mold smell. It’s winter so I can’t open the door and open windows to complete air out. But I’d really like get rid of the smell.. haven’t cleaned the drain yet but maybe that has mold in it.. is that a possibility?

  • Hi there–I have searched over and over for a solution to my issue which NOBODY seems to address: how to get the dishwasher hose CLEAN. The drainage hose from d/w to garbage disposal SMELLS horrible and I want to know what the solution is. You can see black gunk in the hose, near the disposal–and I can SMELL it. Everything works fine. No drainage issues. If anyone has a link to solve this issue, I would appreciate it! Thanks!

  • Oh gosh I can’t stand my dishwasher anymore. It stinks. Bad. I just moved into a house that had an old GE dishwasher that has a bottom sprayer that you have to have specific tools to remove the filter. I have used Vinegar. BAKING SODA AND BLEACH. NOTHING WORKS AND IM GOING CRAZY. IM A WOMAN LIVING ALONE AND I HAVE NO HELP. THE DISHWASHER SAYS TO USE FINISH BUT I HEARD TO USE CASCADE. I TRIED FOR HOURS TO GET THE FILTER OUT AND I CANT!!! IM ABOUT READY TO BUY A NEW DISHWASHER. I CAN’T STAND THAT FUNKY SMELL. LIKE OLD NASTY STAGNENT WATER. HELP!!

  • Thank you for this! I bought a house with a dishwasher that’s like 10-15 years old… It works great as far as removing grease goes. But I kept smelling a funk, coming from what I thought was the drain. I ran an entire bottle of Dawn power wash through the drain, followed by an organic orange oil drain declogger and deodorizer. Didn’t help. I didn’t run the dishwasher for a few days, and when I opened it up I was like OMG HOLY MOTHER OF STANKNESS!! I removed the filter cover and there were nasty, clumpy, almost glued in chunks of nastiness everywhere and blocking the drain. I cleaned that off. I did this exactly as described in this article. I have a brand new dishwasher. It’s AMAZING. Cleans better than the $2400 dishwasher in my old house. Glasses come out sparkling and I only use a little bit of rinse aid. It’s amazing. You’re a wonderful person.

  • I have a whirlpool dishwasher that looks just like yours. Theres a vent on the left side that gets blocked when the door is closed. I was afraid to leave it like that and moved the machine out so i can see the control panel with the door closed and the vent isn’t venting into the cabinet that could either warp the wood or cause mold. Any thoughts?

  • We used our old dishwasher for 13 years before it gave out. We never cleaned that thing one time and it never had even a hint of stink. We just got a new one and after about three months this thing stinks. We don’t put anything really dirty in it, we rinse everything first. Not sure why the old appliances didn’t stink but the new ones do. We had the same thing with a washing machine we bought a while ago. We had to run these special pods through it to take the stink away. Never had to do that with washers before.

  • Pan I have a dishwasher that has never been “cleaned”. I put it in in 2008. I just now seen the article to “how to clean a dishwasher”.I started sad to say the dishwasher before pouring in the vinegar. I poured about 8 oz in as it was washing. But the “oder” is well lets just say it smells like a dog running pen not cleaned in a month, LOL. Will I have to do as you said from the beginning and pour the vingar in before starting the cycle? If the smell dont go away after several times …what then should I do ?
