How To Build Interior Shiplap Siding?

Shiplap is a popular type of wooden siding that can be used on both interior and exterior walls of a building. It is made from thin planks of wood, typically cedar, pine, or spruce, that overlap to form a tight, sealed barrier that is durable and weather-resistant. To make shiplap, you can use a table saw and dado blade setup to cut duplicate rabbets on any size lumber. The depth of the rabbets should be half the thickness of the lumber, and the shiplap can be installed on interior walls, accent walls, small spaces, or ceilings.

To create shiplap cladding, measure your wall and cladding, cut the cladding boards, mark your walls using a stud finder, nail the boards into the wall, ensure they are straight, fit, sand, and fill holes with a putty knife and filler. The cheapest way to get thin wood shiplap strips at an exact height is to cut them out of ¼″ plywood or MDF sheets (I went with maple plywood).

In this guide, you will learn how to make shiplap from almost any piece of lumber old or new, using only the right tools and a table saw. Purchase and cut plywood down to 6 inch strips, mark studs on the wall using a stud finder and pencil, and use coins to set a consistent gap for seasonal expansion and contraction when installing shiplap horizontally on a wall.

What is replacing shiplap in 2024?

Wainscoting and beadboard wall treatments are a classic and affordable way to elevate a space. These DIY projects involve adding wooden panels or planks to the lower half of a wall, adding visual interest and elevating the space. With the right tools, you can create a unique and timeless look. Wallpaper has also made a comeback, offering a wide range of patterns, textures, and designs. It can add depth and visual interest to a room, making it an ideal choice for accent walls. Removable and peel-and-stick wallpapers are popular for their convenience. This DIY project can transform a room from underwhelming to amazing, making it a popular feature in a home.

Can you shiplap without drywall?

It is possible to install shiplap on ceilings without drywall by affixing it directly to joists or furring strips with the aid of a stud finder. It is imperative that the boards be securely attached using 2-inch brad nails or 1-1/4 inch crown staples. In order to achieve an authentic appearance, it is recommended that the rows be staggered when installing shiplap on a ceiling. It is important to remember that the interior of one’s residence is a reflection of one’s personal style and should be treated as such.

Why not to use shiplap?

Shiplap made from natural wood is not waterproof and should be avoided in areas with high humidity or dampness. Moisture-resistant materials like vinyl planks can be used. Fire-rated MDF shiplap can be used near heat sources, but natural shiplap should be avoided due to its flammability. To protect against fires, use flame retardant materials when installing wall coverings near heat sources like stoves and fireplaces. Natural shiplap’s composition is similar to softwood species like pine or cedar.

When not to use shiplap?

For areas with high humidity or dampness, consider using moisture-resistant materials like vinyl planks or moisture-resistant shiplap. Fire-rated MDF shiplap is suitable for heat-prone areas, but natural shiplap should be avoided due to its flammable nature. Always use flame retardant materials when installing wall coverings near heat sources like stoves and fireplaces to protect against fires.

What not to do when installing shiplap?

It is advisable to avoid leaving the edges of shiplap exposed in DIY projects, as this is a common practice observed on online platforms.

Should you start at the top or bottom of shiplap walls?

In order to affix two pieces together, it is recommended to use brad nails in order to ensure that they remain flush. This is due to the absence of a stud behind the surface, which would otherwise provide the necessary support to prevent the boards from moving out of alignment.

What boards to use for a shiplap wall?

Shiplap, originally used for building watertight ships, has evolved into a versatile material used in various interior design styles. It can be created using real wood, composite planks, or faux materials. To install shiplap walls, it is essential to determine the exact size of the project, measure the length and width of the area, calculate the square footage, and determine the number of boards needed. Additionally, locate and map wall studs, which will be used to anchor the shiplap boards safely. A stud finder can be a helpful tool for this step.

Should shiplap be nailed or screwed?

Nails are the optimal choice for affixing shiplap cladding, as they offer a rapid installation process, straightforward application, and the capacity to seamlessly integrate with the material. Trim nails are a more expedient option than screws, as they do not necessitate the preliminary step of predrilling, which can otherwise result in unsightly splits. Furthermore, they can be readily concealed or repaired if necessary. It is therefore recommended that trim nails be used for the installation of shiplap cladding.

What is the new trend instead of shiplap?

Slatted walls are a great upgrade for homes with wood panels that are less than an inch wide. They can be installed vertically or horizontally and can be used to create a sense of character and class. Empty walls can make a house look unfinished, but the latest wall design trends can fill it with character and remain classy. Hidden doors are a popular choice for empty walls, and they can be used to transform a room into a doorway.

Custom bookshelf designs, shelves-pulling doors, or rotating wardrobes can also be used to create a secret room. These classy renovations showcase style and personality in one project, making your home a more inviting and functional space.

Shiplap is a lightweight exterior house siding that can be installed on interior walls using various methods such as construction adhesive, finish nails, or furring strips. It adds instant charm to interior walls and is easy to install in various spaces, including dining rooms, bedrooms, halls, and living areas. Shiplap is perfect for accent walls or adding a vintage, farmhouse, or traditional look. It can be installed horizontally for a modern farmhouse look, or vertically for a chunkier, thicker look.

  • Hullo young man. I done a similar project for garage doors many many years ago and it was for the same reasons as yourself. my way was not as well thought out as yours but it got their in the end. I take it you have not been contacted by any shaving companies lately. No sarcasm intended. I did enjoy your article on the wall panelling.

  • Hey John, so I made the router jig just like you did. But on the first pass along the edge of the board the router jumped numerous times left and I had a very bad dado. Luckily I tried it on a test board. I had to do my first run with a 8ft guide on the left side. Once I had a dado for the jig it worked well. You made it look so easy. I couldn’t keep the first cut straight. Any tips for me?

  • First, Home Depot Carries these sheets premade. Secondly, everywhere else carries T-111. I just don’t understand going to all this effort to produce what it already, visually, the same product. I like how you used your router, though, instead of trying to muscle those massive sheets through a table saw. I probably would have used my cordless skill saw with a jig.

  • I used T1-11 5/8 in plytanium plywood for the tongue & groove effect. It comes in 4X8 sheets and is rough sawn with chamfered edges and shiplapped edges on the 8ft side. It does cost about $12 more per sheet but for all the work required to create the look, I think it is well worth it. It is also treated for exterior use. I used this on my cathedral ceilings in between the exposed timbers. Looks like tongue & groove stained to accent a beautiful wood grain.
