I agree with Tommy a couple of things i would have done different. 1 get rid of the old evidence marks on the door from the old hardware looks tacky. 2 The chiseling of the new hinges, I would made cuts across first so my jamb didn’t run and wind up with a cut to deep. 3 longer screws on the hinges..
I think the door is a non steel, ultra light composite,, thats why the short screws,,,, If it wasnt a fancy window edged, 1000$ + door,, i would almost say buy a new one with better design,,, perhaps a french door mite be a good fit here? I know that house design and it’s horrible. Right at the front door they go up for the living room, kitchen and two bedrooms. Then going down leads to one bedroom then if they are out of luck, people have to go through that one bedroom just to get to the backyard. They call it a 3 bedroom but it’s very tight. Hi This Old House . I hope someone can respond quickly? I have a closet door with mold all the way thru the bottom wood door. My dog has separation anxiety and during my sickness with covid he shaped the soft moldy part into bits. Now I have a hole that spans the bottom of my wood door as he removed all the moldy part. My landlord says” there’s no way to turn the door upside down without having to drill a new hole, no calibration”. As an artist I see it’s no problem to put wood panel an paint the door. No need to change lock . Just put hinges on other side .
Alright people of YouTube. I am wanting to do this to my front door. Our builders were stupid an the swing makes no sense in front of our stairs. However, the hole for the strike plate in the jamb is at the exact level of the middle hinge. So I would obviously need to fill that, but with what since it’s such a large hole? Also, is it even possible to fill it and have that hinge be secure enough? Maybe put in 2″ screws on the middle hinge? I also I’m seeing people say why not change it to an outward swing. Isn’t that against code? I thought I read somewhere that you have to have an inward swing Because of fire code or something. Which honestly doesn’t make sense to me because I would think that you would want to push out and not pull in if there were a fire, like in commercial applications. Thoughts?
No I don’t go for this at all. This new way of opening is worse than it was. The problem mentioned by the owner was that coming down the stairs, esp carrying something, then opening the door, it pushed you back onto the stairs, but in this situation the person should get to the floor from the last stair, then move to the right, then open the door, not just stay in front of the stairs. There’s plenty of square space when the door was open. But now, the door protrudes very awkwardly into the square space, it’s really pretty bad this new way round. Ironically, if this were my house and I found the door opening this new way, I would do this same job to swing it the other way, like it was to begin with!! A lot of the doors I install have directional glass because of low-e reflection. The screws to take the glass out are now on the outside of the door. Hopefully it is an interior/exterior paint on the door. I am guessing that originally this hose had a double door because of the staircase and a wide door. Homeowners see a door they like and don’t think about the practicality of it. Oh, and don’t get me started about the doorknob being directional.
As Kyle mentions below about the directional low-e glass, there is also the issue of the thermal seal of the glass insert. Without reversing the insert the insert mounting screws are now outside(see the little round plug covers?) and the seal is inside. There is NO seal on the inner insert frame. This door WILL LEAK! I guess you COULD put a storm door in front of it but that will also require fir outs on the center mull posts(I recommend PVC brickmould trimmed), a process that nearly no home owner understands. Also, OMG who’s the moron that simply turned the existing brickmould on its side instead of trimming it to fit flush(4:20) with the header brickmould? See how it sticks out from the top trim? As a Lowe’s door specialist I would have to ask that installer to be fired.
