How To Add Design To Furniture?

If your living room layout is awkward, consider using a stand TV that can be placed on a console or a freestanding TV that can be moved around. When arranging furniture, start by determining your living room focal point, balancing high ceilings with curtains, filling empty space with a console table or sideboard, defining a large room with area rugs, and filling a perfect furniture layout.

To create the perfect furniture layout, use wood putty epoxy to fill decorative carvings and create a smooth surface on your furniture. First, buy wood filler, putty knife, sandpaper, a sanding block, and latex gloves. HomeDesigns AI can help you design your living room in various styles, making the task easy and enjoyable.

To create the perfect furniture layout, follow five main principles: look for existing furniture design ideas, make a rough sketch of the furniture, make technical drawings or woodworking plans, and take influences from common objects. Mix up Bondo, which doesn’t shrink and dries fast, and spread it into the furniture.

In summary, arranging furniture in an awkward living room can be done using various techniques, such as using wood putty epoxy to fill in carved wood furniture, creating a smooth surface with wood putty epoxy, and incorporating common objects into your design. By following these guidelines, you can create unique and stylish living room layouts that enhance your space.

  • That pink flower is gorgeous. I am loving that little side table Mary. It is so beautiful. It could go anywhere! I would love it in my guest bathroom to hold candles, toilet paper, anything a guest may have left at home like deodorant, nail file/kit, even face cloths for removing makeup. The tray was gorgeous also—two of my favorite things you’ve ever done. Great job–I’ve never used the decals either. Can’t wait to see what you do in the future.

  • Wow, I love both of those pieces, the transfers are lovely and I think you choose the perfect 2 items to transform. I have only just watched Catherine from Dainty Diaries use transfers to breathe new life into an old chest of drawers and in another article for her IKEA shelving in her greenhouse! Both worth a watch. I’m still recovering from covid fatigue and feeling very frustrated that my sewing of curtains and cushions and the painting of my kitchen diner have been held up…but I feed my imagination with your projects and my soul with your gentle spirit. Thank you Mary for sharing your gifts and thank God for blessing us with you xx

  • Mary, I follow a lot of furniture flippers, and whenever they use transfers, they seal them with either wax or a brush-on or spray-on sealer such as polycrylic, ModPodge, etc. Just wanted you to know. Might prevent damage on down the line. Also, I think the original piece of furniture is what was called a waterfall vanity.

  • So glad you love the world of tranfers! I have used these and even on wooden trays like you demo’d. I usually seal mine with a topcoat. Some other transfers are IOD brand, Jami Ray Vintage (she has some unique paper type decoupage items). Prima has so many great ones to choose from! Your projects turned out BEAUTIFULLY!

  • Sheila McDade in Chattanooga here . . . Your transformation of that sad little stand is so beautiful! My mother had one of those dressing tables like that; hers was dark mahogany and had a little stool. Every morning before school I sat on the stool looking at myself in the mirror as she braided my hair. That was over 60 years ago! What a flashback! Thank you for sharing your projects with us.

  • Hey! Love love your articles. On your transfer you were very lucky! Do not take the paper off the back till you are ready to apply! I can’t believe the home transfer didn’t stick to your counter top. Be careful most of the time if it touches an object it will stick. Also don’t forget to burnish it after applying it and seal it!!! Has to be sealed it will Lift off later if not sears! Thanks again for you great articles.

  • They look lovely Mary I have used the transfers a few times on furniture and they are so pretty, the only thing is they are a bit pricey and add to the selling price.I know you can cut them up and use on different pieces though,IOD iron orchid designs have some with a few sheets of transfers, again pricey but they can go along way xx

  • They look lovely Mary, I love seeing old stuff brought back to life, it never gets old. It was funny with your cat – I was just telling you he wanted to come in at the same time as you asked your son to let him in! I love my cats but they always wants something when you’re busy. Have a great week, God bless x

  • More beautiful projects ❤️ I’m pitching an idea that I would love to SELFISHLY see come to be. I would love for you and your sister to collaborate on making transfers. With her beautiful botanicals and talent to draw, y’all would make stunning transfers and beautiful projects for us to make. This would be so different from the transfers that are out there. They would be tastefully and simply done, knowing you. Just an idea 💕💕 I would love more greenery and wild flowers on my pieces. With my arthritis in my fingers, hand painting is becoming difficult for me. Thank you again for making things that are old, beautiful again 🙋‍♀️

  • Transfers are great! I used them very sparingly the first few years because they were expensive and I wasn’t a fan of the large profile ones, but Prima recently came out with a line of smaller transfers (3 6×12 sheets) that are really versatile. They’re only about $13 and include lots of images so you really get a good bang for your buck. I ordered a bunch – Spring, Easter, florals, butterflies, farm animals, birds, Fall, Christmas, and a few others. The images and colors are all so nice I may have gone a little overboard on my order, but 🤷🏻‍♀️ … oh well. I have two of the set you used. I like those and another set of 4 called Bicycles (I think) that I use specifically for trays, tray tables, breakfast trays, and nesting tables. They are the perfect size for that and my tables and trays always sell very quickly with these transfers on them.

  • I just saw someone who flips furniture – TheKraftyCreech – use oven cleaner to remove paint. She said she’s been seeing it a lot and it has less fumes than typical paint remover. It seemed to work really well! Have you ever tried oven cleaner as a remover? I just love that you placed the decal on the front drawers! So pretty!🌺The tray turned out super cute, too! Thank you for showing your very creative ideas Miss Mary!💐💐💐Hope you have a great rest of your week!🥰

  • Mary I love perusal your articles! This one is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your life with us. I also love your cleaning days…it gives me so much inspiration 😍. I found a night table for free..so I will try this. I think you may find these transfers in Hobby Lobby. Not sure if you have that store in your area. It is family owned a wonderful craft & furniture, decor store. I live in Fort Wayne,IN.

  • Hello Mary! You are such a joy to watch. You inspire me to think outside the box when working on DIY or thrift projects. I am blessed to have a home office but need an extra guest sleeping space too. Do you have any suggestions for how one might go about making a daybed? I would love any advice you might have 🙂

  • I think that piece turned out beautiful. I too am getting interested in transfers. They are so much fun n they can turn a ugly duckling into a swan. I thought that was the sweetest gift one of your viewers sent you. You are going to have so much fun with transfers. You’ll have to try out the molds that IOD’s have. Their fun to work with n use on different items. Just remember if you try any of them always use corn starch inside the mold ( brush it in) n put them in the freezer for 15 minutes n they’ll pop out so nicely. Then let them air dry. Curious though. Are you going to put that piece in your booth or keep it? It’s really pretty. Blessings always ♥️♥️😊👍👍

  • Hello! Your little stand and tray turns out so pretty! Those rub-on transfers sure add the right touch, don’t they? I have some transfers, but haven’t used them yet. I’m also into decoupage as well and have started a little collections of really pretty papers…just waiting for that right piece to come my way. I’ve been thinking on a good devotional to do as well; my husband and I do our daily Bible study together where we each read a couple chapterS to one another, and then we talk about what we read. Right now we are in Colossians. Thank you for sharing🥰

  • Heck, an offset spatula is just a paint scraper you have in your kitchen drawer! 😁 I use tools interchangeably, and the more skills and hobbies you have, the more you see the overlap – and the more you realize that your knitting needle is useful for planting seedlings, or your quilting rotary cutter and transparent ruler are perfect for cutting shelf liner and wallpaper!! This turned out gorgeous! And isn’t it fun to try something new?

  • Beautiful Mary! I recently tried transfers love how easy and wonderful results. You did a great job.😊 I have a pair of these I’ve had for years, they are in Really bad shape so they’ve just sat. You’ve inspired me too flip them, I have a bird transfer that would be beautiful. Thanks for the article you did an amazing job 😉

  • Mary, I need some advice about painting a shaker style console table. My house is a mixture of traditional and farmhouse. The piece is a maroon color now and is located in an area that is more in the farmhouse style. Not sure I’m into the white. Any suggestions? Just love how you decorate and you’re able to make old pieces look so pretty!

  • I have that dresser. it’s 100 yrs old. there is a tall mirror in the center and 2 smaller mirrors hinged to the tall mirror. I have the whole bedroom set. it was a wedding present to my grandparents who were married in 1923. I received it as a wedding present in 1989. I think about painting it, but can’t bring myself to do so. I did use white wax on the furniture to help highlight the embellishments.

  • You didn’t seem to sand either piece before painting. Did you just not show it, or did you really not sand? If not, what factors helped you decide not to? Love these transfers, and the final results are beautiful. Especially like that the transfer on the drawers continues off the side of the drawer fronts. Great job, Mary

  • You might want to consider being a distributor for Iron Orchid Designs (made by Prima) also redesign as they have a multitude of furniture decals and they’re hard to find in stores-their style is right up your alley! If you feature them in your cottages you could sell some of your art right off the walls.

  • I want to thank Suzanne also! I have had this same transfer pack for a long time and I never like what I want to use them on. I love how you added the pretty pink roses to this sweet piece! I have a couple of small chests that you have inspired me to go ahead and use the transfers on. The Welcome one is perfect on your server/tray. Looking forward to more of your ideas using transfers. (Love the cat at the window:))

  • I have been using the Prima transfers for several years and love them. I have the same ones you are using on my bedside tables. Believe it or not, I put a small humidifier on a piece I had done and it leaked overnight. I thought it would be ruined but I had sealed it with two coats and there was ZERO damage. You will need to seal anything of value.

  • I love the way you meet a new concept head on and just do it. A few months ago I picked up a cute little cabinet. I thought it was a smoking stand, but the copper is on the outside of the drawers and cabinet. Much of the copper has come off and I could not get it to stick even with E-600. I am so apprehensive to paint it. It is cute the way it is and the wood where the copper was is much lighter than the stained and varnished areas. The contrast gives the piece much interest, but it is so old looking. It will never be a valuable antique piece of furniture but I am still afraid to paint it and unsure of decorating it once it is painted. I think you are so brave.
