Why are board books good for kids?

Board books are an excellent way to introduce reading to young learners, as they teach children the mechanics of reading, such as holding a book and turning pages, and the importance of word repetition. These books also help children develop language development and word recognition. Despite the need to depict minority populations more accurately, the increasing diversity of characters in board books can introduce young readers to different cultures and people. This can be particularly beneficial for underrepresented children.

One such board book is Baby Faces: Little Lion, by Ekaterina Trukhan, which features a lift-the-flap book with a mirror on every page. This series aims to enhance early mirror play, as babies love finding their own face on every page. The book features large card flaps with friendly animals, making it easy for even the youngest hands to grab. The back cover also features a QR code for a playful rhyming song based on the classic “Finger Family” rhyme.

Why are felt board stories good?

Felt stories have been a popular storytime activity in schools and libraries for years, allowing young children to engage in storytelling by guessing what will appear behind a feltboard or calling out the name of an animal, letter, or object. These stories help young children learn about the beginning, middle, and end of a story, as well as the visual sequences of the story. By having children hold a piece of the sequence in their hands and taking turns to place it on the board, they build narrative skills that are crucial for later reading.

Felt stories are important early literacy tools that offer children rich multimodal learning opportunities. Many children enjoy the felt board as a part of their storytime, especially when they participate in the storytelling. They often create new and hilarious stories using the felt shapes, such as using colored dots to re-color Dog’s eyeballs.

Felt stories offer engaging, visual experiences, sensory, physical, linguistic, and interactive experiences, and are a simple and inexpensive early literacy tool that can be made by the child. Despite the lack of scholarly research supporting this claim, felt stories are a valuable tool for children’s early literacy development.

  • After following the link above to inquire about the patterns, I found it almost laughable at the price of everything and on top of that a monthly subscription fee. Not sure who in their right mind would pay such absorbent cost for things that can easily be found for free on you tube and elsewhere. I’m all for people trying to make a buck but this is just price gouging at its finest.

  • Where did you get the idea for your heart tattoo? 🙂 Me and my mom made ours 15-20 years ago and started then and there a “pay it forward” tatto. Since then I have given it to a couple of people and so has my mom. Theese people have then given it to someone who is special to them. Did you get the tattoo from some one or is it your own idea? Curious:)

  • This tutorial is great — but I just have to say, that having to pay $17 for U.S. shipping for the materials and then $10 minimum just to download the silly elephant cut-out pattern is really, really feeling like a rip-off. I understand that you need to make money off your products. I don’t have a problem with charging money. But at $17 for shipping and $10 for a print-out doesn’t feel like I’m getting a good product at a fair price: it feels like I’m getting ripped off and it leaves the whole thing with a bad taste in my mouth.

  • My best friend loves elephants and Im going to make one of these for her 18th birthday. Her bday is in december though, 8 months and 3 days haha. Im planning lots of presents (in total 18) and im going to make this one soon as I have lots of time due to quarantine! My family thinks im Silly and childish doing these type of things as I myself am 18 (just turned). I hope my friend whos helped me so much and always make me smile will enjoy it though.
