Reupholstering car seats can be a rewarding DIY project that can significantly enhance the appearance and comfort of your vehicle’s interior. The standard style is electric, but subframes don’t swap over, so manual adjustment is required. Old seats with tears, slashes, and exposed springs can be replaced or upgraded. This process can also update the vehicle’s interior.
Reupholstering seat belt buckles on 5th gens work with 4th gen seat belts, but do not remove the seat belt light. To fix this, swap in the 4th gen seat belt. To install an aftermarket bench seat, unbolt the bucket seats and center console and bolt in an aftermarket bench seat that fits your car.
The process of reupholstering car seats can range from four bolts out to lifting the seat out and placing the new seat in. Most vehicles have four bolts holding each of the front seats in, which are typically found holding the four legs of the seat tracks down at the corners. Removing the seats and being careful if they have internal airbags (Katkin kits) can help.
Visually all of your car’s interior can be upgraded with lots of ways to customize the seats, carpets, and dashboard. However, front seats are “sided”, meaning the passenger seat cannot be fitted on the driver’s side due to their mountings. There are three options: 1) Find a leather upholstery company that makes custom replacements, or 2) Find a “totaled” similar model in a salvage yard.

Can you change the interior seats of your car?

This process enables the user to modify the appearance of the seats by incorporating alternative colors and materials, thereby enhancing the aesthetic quality of the vehicle interior.
Can you swap front seats in a car?
It can be reasonably assumed that vehicles manufactured in or after 2004 are equipped with occupant weight sensors integrated into the front seats, which are linked to the airbag system. The replacement of these seats results in the removal of the sensors, which causes the airbags to malfunction and the SRS warning light to remain illuminated.
Can I add leather seats to my car?
The interior design process entails the removal of existing seat upholstery and the stripping down of the seats themselves, leaving them in a state akin to that of a factory production line. Subsequently, our experienced technicians install the new leather material, thereby ensuring that the vehicle appears to have been manufactured with it. The results are so impressive that one might be forgiven for failing to realize that the vehicle in question did not originally come with the leather interior in question.
How expensive is it to put leather seats in a car?
Manufacturer upgrades for vehicle seats can range from $1500 to $2000, especially for older or retired models. However, if your car is within a few years of purchase, dealership or licensed shops may be able to offer these upgrades at a lower cost. The type of leather used also plays a significant role in the cost, with domestically produced leather being the least expensive. Higher-end retailers, such as those that hand-stitches upholstery, may charge more for these upgrades. Therefore, it’s essential to consider the specific type of leather you want for your car’s upgrade.

Is it hard to reupholster car seats?
DIY reupholstery kits are a cost-effective alternative to full reupholstery, but they can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. The process can take up to 24 hours and requires specific tools. Repair kits, which typically start at $20 each, are cheaper than full reupholstery and can be used to patch holes, pull tears together, or repair small holes or tears. However, they may not fit like factory-fitted seats.
For more extensive damage, replacing the car seats completely is a simpler option. This involves unbolting old seats and bolting in new ones. New car seats can be purchased for $170 to $500 per seat or second-hand seats for less. However, even if you replace the seats, you still need to replace the upholstery.
In summary, DIY reupholstery kits can save money but can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. If the damage is not extensive, a different option may be necessary.
Can car seat be installed in front?
It is imperative that the rear-facing child car seat be installed in the back seat of the vehicle, as the airbags located in the front dash have the potential to cause injury to children in the event of a vehicular collision. Two options are available for securing the seat: a universal anchorage system (UAS) or a seat belt. It should be noted that the UAS is not suitable for use with infant seats that do not have a removable base. Therefore, it would be prudent to consider the seat belt option.
Is car seat installation hard?
Installing a car seat correctly is crucial for your child’s safety, as incorrect installation can lead to dangerous consequences. Car seats save lives, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimating that they reduce the risk of injury for kids by up to 82 compared to seat belts. Booster seats for older kids reduce the risk by 45. Federal highway authorities also report that car seats reduce fatalities by 71 for infants and 54 for kids 1 to 4 years old.
How much does it cost to change seats in a car?
Reupholstering a vehicle’s seat can significantly enhance its style but can be costly, with an average cost of $250-$750 per seat. The choice of material depends on the type of upholstery, with leather, fabric, and vinyl being the main options. Fabric is generally the most affordable option, while leather upholstery has the highest price point. While most people call an upholstery shop for seat repairs, it is possible to reupholster car seats yourself. It takes 2-4 hours for someone with solid DIY knowledge to reupholster one seat, so it’s essential to have enough time and focus on one seat at a time.
How hard is it to change seats in a car?
Swapping out old car seats is a simple task that requires the use of brackets, allen keys, an adjustable wrench, and old blankets to avoid damage. There may be a wire from the dashboard leading to the seat, possibly connected to the seat belt system or pressure pads, which determine the seat belt warning light. If fitted, there may be wires for the seat heater. Carefully disconnect these wires, as they will need to be refitted to the new seats. Each front car seat is connected to the chassis with four bolts, which can be removed and lifted out. Keep the old bolts safe for fitting the new seats.

Attention ! For begginers or for more precise work, just remove your old seats upholstery and unsew everything into pieces, so then you will have a completely precise pattern for your car seats. Then at the pattern you can design custom upholstery designs, and then you just have a little more job because it’s custom design but if you want to change just fabric of seats this way it’s a lot easier.
Omg, it’s the first time I ask you tube a question and I find exactly what I am looking for on the first title I hit. You guys are awesome. I am from the UK and wish that I could work in a place like yours. You have a laugh but are serious about your work and excellent at it. Well done at the sewing as well as corners are never easy especially when it’s leather and foam. 😊
Good job on the seat cover and awesome article! Very informative. What size thread do you sew the covers with? I noticed your machine was a Consew, what needle size do you use? I have made vinyl & leather purses & bags and my son & I are going to have a go with seat covers for a 1930 Ford. I would love to take one of your classes!
Thank you for posting this article! It helps me feel more comfortable about tackling the re-upholstery projects I have ahead of me! 🙂 Hey… question… I am planning to redo the original seats in our Sprinter van so they’re more comfortable for the wife and me on long trips. Plus, I need to re-do the bench seats in the way back since they need to match the captain’s seats I got from a set of ’06 Envoy SUV’s. Anyway, for the driver and passenger seats, is it better to go with a more dense foam or should I go with something softer? Or should I do a layer of more dense foam covered with a layer of softer foam? Comfort and support are my goals (nobody likes a sore butt!). Thanks again for your articles!
I was interested in seeing others do this but the examples are so poor. The mistake is made because the teacher didnt bother to tell the guy to align the center details before sewing. You shouldnt glue the foam to the leather either, it will wear poorly over time and ball up once it tears loose. Then… when the teacher fixes the issue you haul ass through the fix it was pointless to watch. Do Better.
I’m in the process of planning on making a custom bomber style bucket seat for my gokart, but struggling how i would fasten the cushion to the bomber seat. Any idea how i would go about that? I was thinking of putting a steel plate with welded on nuts on the wood backing, (hides the stapling as well), then bolting that to my bomber seat. Would that work?
i did upholstery at a boat factory, then did custom boat upholstery. hard part is to learn to stitch straight. now i learned how to build a shoe/boot from scratch with 360 welts. i messed up a lot of shoes and boots before i made something worth wearing. glad i used cheap leathers. humans have the fastest muscle memory, we learn fast.
The reduction of overall weight in a car is very important. A 2017 Mustang Gt could weigh 3800 pounds. How much do the front and rear seats weigh?? You should have weighed the OEM seats of, (for example) a Mustang GT,+ metal base, compared to the three seats you mentioned in your article. Some day Ford & GM could reduce their car weights by 200 pounds +/- just by tinkering with non electronic multi settings seats.
What’s a decent seat and base/sliders that is daily driving focused. And is lower than the stock seat by at least an inch or inch and a half. So i can sit straight back as I am almost 6 feet and chubby lol the stock 86 seats are managable. But I’d rather have seats that are a little lower. Any recommendations
I will not spend more than 3/ 400 dollars on a single seat, thats insane and i make good money, if it was a race car and my life was on the line that would be a different story but for a daily driver 6 /800 dollars for a set is tops, no more, fuck all that Recaro and 1100 a seat bullshit, pardon my french but people that make seats should realize 3/4 Benjamins its still good money and should be a for a seat, they sell enough of them to make a good living.
I need something to replace my stock New Edge Mustang GT seats. The stock ones are just old fashion clunky muscle car seats and they are very uncomfortable for long drives. I wish I could find something to fit the Mustang that was like my 3rd Gen Trans Am seats. Those were way more comfortable and the right height for the head rest. The only other dilemma is the stock seats are powered seats so there’s gotta be a way to preserve that functionality with the after market seats I get.
