Ok, this is absolutely the greatest article explaining a regular A/C system including both the components and the physics behind them. The diagram at 0:36 paints simultaneously and intuitively the pressure, the temperature and the refrigerant phase throughout the entire system. This diagram is brilliant! The example of pressures and temperatures at 3:44 is also very informative. I am not a HVAC technician but I am into physics and was looking for detailed physical explanations of what different components are and the transitions of the refrigerant between these components. I have a question, My church has canvas ducting for the heat and air and is suspended from the ceiling. It seems to have a wire structure to support it… Im guessing… What is the proper name for that type of duct work? The registers are cut like a C shape that closes when its not running. I have a 24×40 two story house with a basement. It has a 2 ton hvac for the basement and first floor. 1 1/2 ton for the upstairs. I am thinking about getting replacements for them and storing them until I need them. My question is, can I just get 2 two ton units ( inside and out) and use the 2 ton instead of the 1 1/2 ton. I work on a multifamily residential property and the old technicians were replacing the heat pumps with r410 new units but didn’t replaced the old air handlers which are compactible with the old r22 heat pumps that were removed. i am finding that coil is freezing up, when i get it to thaw, my pressure/temperature readings are reading normally. What’s going on, I nee help and how can I remedy this? The evaporator coil is rated for r22 system

Can I just replace a new condenser without furnace? My current Hvac is 2009 Bryant 4 tons 16 sheer,401A,two stage. My condenser is broken as my mistake operate so I wanna replace a new one. There are some companies which came to my house and had a check on the whole system and gave me quotes. Some of them say I need to replace the whole system(furnace and conderser). Some of them say my furnance is in really good condition still can run7~10years, just need to replace the conderser. I ask them if the new condenser can work with my current furnace very well and they don’t send the different signal to each other. They say that’s OK, just change the condenser is ok for the whole system. So I wanna ask if it’s really OK that I just chang a new 4tons 16sheer SINGLE stage Goodman or Lennox condenser for my current furnace or the whole system?
I have a quick question I’m currently in school and working in the hvac feild. I was asked about the refrigeration cycle but was told I was wrong on the evaporator side saying low pressure low tempature vapor. I was then corrected saying it was a low pressure high tempature vapor because it was superheated vapor refrigerant. So is it low temp or high any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Just because someone can install a central heat and air conditioner does NOT mean they understand the science of hot and cold air, even though it’s simple. They installed a smaller unit upstairs, which stays hotter during the summer, and a larger unit downstairs, which stays cooler. Its physics! They also recommend the thermostat be in the upstairs hallway, dead space, at the open stairwell where the heat rises from the downstairs. HVAC people are technicians, definitely not science oriented. They don’t think.
Had a HVAC tech tell me that our 2 year old system had mixed refrigerant in it which is the cause of low cooling and compressor clicking noise during running. How can someone say you have mixed refrigerant in a new system when all they did was connect gauges and looked at the readings for 10 minutes if that. They recommend recovery and install new refrigerant 7.6 lbs in a unit that says 4.6 lbs. Apparently they think I can’t read?
When we take off heat from room, we cool the air in room by turning low pressure low temperature refrigerant liquid in evaporator into low pressure low temperature vapor. Can we just simple remove this heat by passing refrigerator through condenser without turning it into high pressure high temperature vapor, or so to speak without using work from compressor?

Isnt one port closed during installation preventing nitrogen flow? I have not yet seen anyone flow nitrogen during replacement which has to be terrible for the system.
How about we start designing condensers with 2 relays In series? 1 would be a dummy relay and when y’all get a green horn have him trained to bypass the dummy relay in case he or she not have one on the van or is having a long stressful day cus we all do also have personal lives and the infrastructure tends to forget and consider this that we yearn for more time with our family, so that way y’all make money with less and we as engineers make more money by selling a $1000 markup on our system with that extra $5 relay that acts like a dummy. (In place of contactor I.E simple single stage equipment). I think that would promote business and financial transparency and boost company and industry efficiency. However reading over this, the politics on the business ethics portion is questionable? The replacement of contactor for relay is just a small proposal and minor money making detail. Especially in todays time when employee retention is at its most challenging due to fluctuations and reductions of our American value in the dollar or whatever world currency Service tech and installer and refrigeration engineer (6 years) Also would throw off “do it yourself YouTube customers” and bring in more potential for opportunities
Hello Mr AC Service Tech. Is the condensor coil (usually) inside or outside the house? Another thing that I’ve always wondered is that since the condenser fan unit is usually outside the house sitting under the sun (for example in the backyard), so it’a already hot as f itself so how is it able to cool the coil and the hot vapor which itself is also hot as f? As knowledgeable as you are, you are not a good enough teacher yet. You go too fast and you leave out fundamental facts about what you are trying to teach leaving students like myself wondering what you mean. Is the system running or not is one of the one’s you leave out quite often for us beginners. That being said…I trust your knowledge which is a huge plus. Slow down and pre-state the conditions we’re starting with each time and you’ll be the best teacher on YouTube. I should know, I was, before I retired, the best local HS math teacher…and even the best salesperson when I did that. On a different note, I bought at auction a Snap-On R-12 service machine. Did they recover refrigerant in those days? It will apparently vacuum out a system, but it doesn’t appear to collect the refrigerant. Can I modify it to do so? Thank you sir.

I bought quick guide troubleshooting card through Amazon. Under TXV Metering device in cooling mode, go to scenario and go down to Outdoor coil: low airflow or deteriorated, it says high under subcooling, I think that should be low unless I am misunderstanding. I am trying to learn how to fix my fridge and a/c by myself. These HVAC guys are blood sucking low life leeches. They want $850 to fix a pin hole leak on the copper pipe and recharge the gas when the fridge is $3800 brand new and $500 second hand. Simply cut and weld a new piece of copper pipe which can be done in 2-30mins plus recharge and testing, I am looking at 1.5hrs labour here. Good article thx!

Hey Craig! I’m a Senior in HS and i came across a positive article about your HVAC book! So next summer or so i plan to enroll into a HVAC program at a local trade school and i’m wondering if your book gives a person a pretty good overview of the basics and whatnot of HVAC. Cause i don’t prefer going into trade school next summer being that guy that knows nothing. I kinda want to at least have a basic grasp of what stuff is/does,etc. Also, about trades school, how would you know if a program is a good or bad one? I know i won’t enroll in one until next summer but what are some red flags i should look for when researching the schools or what questions should i ask the trade schools? Thanks!

If this is basic class I am toast. Is there anything lower than basic? You take your pressure and you bring it to the inner ring? How in the world do you bring something that is pressure inside some whatever it is and you bring it to the inner ring. If I was on the phone and told someone, hey Mo, bring that pressure to the inner ring…. go figure. He would be mumbling.. where the heck this guy learned how to speak. But we don’t do that to experts. oh my. what you crazy? huh? What would be wrong if you said it properly like this: Simply look at the indicator and see all the values it is sitting on and that will give all the matching temperature of different refrigerant corresponding to that pressure. There is absolutely nothing wrong whatsover in saying it that way. It does not take any longer in saying it and only once and better yet, it is crystal clear and obvious and even a moron will get it in one second and finished. And there would be no need to memorize some special inner circle lingo bullshit nonsense that has no meaning in the first place. Bring down the pressure to the inner ring. Calliing them ring continously does not make what is, some especial new knowledge or find. Hey, just because you talk fast does not make you a big shot. In my book it makes you disrepectful and arrogant. There is more than one way to bulldoze people and that is all of you, not just you, knowledge authorities do. Big fat ego. Is that how you talk to your girlfriend or your brother who used to beat you and stompped on you because you were too cocky to do a simple thing he asked you.

And do you realize that not one of you experts ever mention that the temperatures you read in them two gauges are not at all related to the temperature a person sees on the wall of his kitchen, outside or in his car or in his fridge or his freezer or whatever, especially when the system is running, the meaning of them temperatures become clear which still never stated. And it looks like this: The evaporator temperature reads 40 degrees and at the time the refrigerant leave the evaporator it is at some whatever 60 degrees. I bet no one even questions what the heck is wrong with that statement. Here I am and wondering the my fridge is colder than his evaporator when it is at its warmest reading, it is at 40 degrees while 35 degrees as a rule and my freezer air and not the evaporator is -10 degrees. Outragous. Isn’t it. I say if your evaporator is 40 degrees you need a new fridge or living in a different universe if you think that it will freeze my dam icecream which mind you better be or you won’t get a nickle from me fixing my system.
Okay so we are learning our pressure readings in class and reading our superheat and subcool, my questions is should there be a average pressure each side SHOULD be? Like how do I know if it’s a high pressure, finding the calculated pressure or is there just general knowledge of what the average high / low pressure of a system should be
I got the e-book. downloaded to iPhone and got garbage. It just does not work in the iPhone at all. I tried in a Windows computer and I have to install Adobe Digital Editions. I can see it but no way to resize letter, no way to search. That is not what is advertised. No way to get help from a human being either. Any comments?
Many seldom think about the accuracy of their pressure gauges or temperature measurements. Gauges can be bought with specs from +/- 0.1% to over +/- 1% accuracy. Cost of gauges is usually in relation to their accuracy. 1% accuracy is about +/- 3 psia at high side pressures. That translates to about +/- 1 deg F uncertainty in vapor temp. Thermocouples of K type (yellow) have an accuracy of about +/- 4 degs F for typical air conditioner temp ranges. Thermocouples of T type (blue) have an accuracy of about +/- 2 deg F for typical air conditioner temp ranges. If thermocouple meter can change its thermocouple type setting, it is better to use the blue T type thermocouple versus the commonly used yellow K type thermocouples. All this is before user errors induced by reading gauge scale off angle making reading a little high or low from angle between needle pointer and scale, and. not providing a good thermal connection between thermocouple and copper tubing due to dirt and corrosion of tubing. Think about this when unit specs a subcooling range of 8 to 12 degs F and your test equipment cumulative temp/pressure reading accuracy is +/- 5 degs F.
Spot on article. Not that it is hard to remember but an old refrigeration tech taught me years ago it is the direction of flow, the suction temp coming to the unit and then the suction pressure at the compressor. Then the pressure exiting the compressor then the temperature of the discharge line of the unit. Absorb heat is superheat and condensing is super cooling. Kinda quirky but helped me to remember the order.
I love this because I use superheat and subcooling on a daily basis dealing with chillers all the time. This article gave a very good explanation as per the troubleshooting guide on a basic system, and it’s amazing for all you commercial and residential guys out there. It’s crazy to think about how amazing this industry is, and I’m grateful to be in it and learn something new every day. This was a really good refresher with just enough theory put behind it to give a great understanding.
