Before Decorating, Should You Leave Your Christmas Tree Unlit?

Before decorating your Christmas tree, it is essential to ensure that it is straight and hydrated. This is the easiest stage to fix, as it is easier to fix at this point. It is usually recommended to let a Christmas tree sit for 24 to 48 hours before decorating to allow the branches time to acclimate to the temperature and humidity of the home.

A properly maintained Christmas tree should not be a fire hazard, as long as you use common sense in decorating it. To avoid over or under-decorating your tree, let it sit for at least 24 hours before decorating. This waiting period is important because the branches need to settle on their own, not under the weight of lights and ornaments.

When decorating your tree, give it 2 to 3 days to adjust by letting it sit in a garage or “in-between” transitional spot before and after they are in the home. As reported by growers across the United States, the top-selling Christmas trees are the most popular.

To decorate safely, cut off the branches with the tree upright and hydrated, then let the tree settle for a couple of hours before decorating. This will give the branches and needles time to open up into their natural shape. If you put the lights and ornaments on before the branches come down a bit, the decorations will not be as effective.

Letting the tree sit overnight should be enough time, but you can observe the branches as an indicator and decorate when they appear more open. Most trees will settle and open up over a couple of hours, so you should wait to start hanging lights and ornaments.

Before starting to decorate, ensure the tree is sitting straight as it will be easier to fix at this point rather than later. It usually takes about 24-48 hours to loosen up and get into the optimal position.

The Christmas tree is the STAPLE of Christmas decorating, and let me tell you–it seems like I’ve tried every theme you could …

When decorating a tree, what goes on first?

To decorate a Christmas tree, start by adding green or white wire strands, or black variations if your tree is black. Choose the color that matches your tree to hide the wire. Illuminate the tree from the inside out, starting at the base and working up, wrapping lights around every major branch. Fluff the branches as you work around the tree. Experiment with different lighting schemes until you find one you like.

Mix and match lights, such as a white or clear background with colored strands wrapping the outer areas of the tree. For more information on designing your perfect tree lighting scheme, refer to our complete guide to putting lights on your Christmas tree.

Why leave the Christmas tree up until January 6th?

January 6, also known as the Epiphany, Little Christmas, or Three Kings Day, is considered the last day for the Christmas season in religious tradition. The last day of the 12-day Christmas season is January 6. According to a 2020 report by Neighbor, over half of Americans don’t frown on keeping decorations up past January 1. However, some neighbors may start to get side-eye, with 31 stating decorations should be removed by January 15, and 33 extending the deadline to February 1.

How soon is too soon to decorate for Christmas?

A majority of 65 editor friends recommend decorating for Christmas after Thanksgiving or the first week of December, as this schedule allows for a clean transition into the yuletide season and aligns with the start of Advent. The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park decorates on Thanksgiving Day. However, 15% agree that decorating after Thanksgiving is the best, suggesting waiting longer into December.

The remaining 20% prefer to start their Christmas tree early, even as early as November 1, as they crave the magic and merry before the turkey dinner. The ideal time to put up the Christmas tree is sometime soon after Thanksgiving.

What is the correct order for decorating a Christmas tree?

To dress a Christmas tree professionally, follow these steps: select a topic, build a theme, fluff and shape, string lights, section the tree, dress the tree, add details, attach a tree topper, and finish with a tree skirt. Start with classic ornaments in silver, gold, white, red, and green to create a different theme each year. Experts often begin with larger ornaments, tucking them deeper within the foliage for a beautiful, layered look.

How quickly does a Christmas tree seal up?

To keep your Christmas tree fresh, keep the tree stand filled with water. If the water drops below the tree’s base, a dried sap seal will form, preventing the tree from absorbing water later. If this seal forms, a new cut will be needed or the tree will wilt and drop its needles. A tree can absorb up to a gallon of water in the first 24 hours, and one or more quarts a day thereafter. Water prevents needle drying, drooping, and keeps the tree fragrant. To keep the sap running, add Prolong Tree Preservative to the water.

Do you have to wait to decorate a Christmas tree?

The importance of putting up a Christmas tree during Advent is not to detract from its significance. Religious sources suggest waiting until the third Sunday of Advent, but any day until Christmas Eve is acceptable. If you have guests coming over, you may want to plan and decorate the tree before they arrive or wait until they arrive to celebrate together. This is a crucial consideration when choosing a timeline for Christmas tree upkeep.

Are you happier if you decorate for Christmas earlier?

It has been posited by experts in the field that the early installation of Christmas decorations can result in an increase in levels of happiness and friendliness amongst the general public. This is thought to be as a result of the stimulation of the feel-good hormone dopamine, which is triggered by the use of colours and lights.

Is there a correct way to decorate a Christmas tree?

To showcase your favorite ornaments, position them in prime positions on the tree. Hang larger ornaments evenly around the tree, spacing them in one color but several sizes and textures. Fill in around these ornaments with medium- and small-size ones, and hang some closer to the trunk for depth and interest. Add specialty items like handmade ornaments, clip-on ornaments, or icicles to make the tree unique. Finish the look with a simple tree topper and a festive tree skirt. Study the tree from various angles to determine if there are empty areas to fill.

How long does a Christmas tree take to relax?

To ensure the safety of your tree, it is recommended not to decorate it within the first 24 hours, as this could lead to issues if the tree is not drinking water or the branches are not fully relaxed. Fresh cuts are made after purchase or delivery, and to prevent sap from sealing the tree’s bottom, place it in room temperature tap water. It is also advised to wait until the tree is drinking water, which may take a few hours or overnight.

Trees can drink up to one quart of water per inch of their trunk diameter, so many tree stands may need to be refilled every few hours for the first 12 to 24 hours. Set a timer to check the water level in the basin for the first night.

How long do you let a Christmas tree sit before decorating?

When setting up a Christmas tree, ensure it is well secured and stable, with no bark chopped off just to fit into the stand. Two people should be set up to hold the tree stable and allow the tree to settle before decorating.

When decorating the tree, it is important to consider safety and avoid being a fire hazard. If installing the tree away from an easily accessible wall socket, use an extensive cord and not overload electrical sockets. Check the lights for proper functioning and inspect the chords for damage or insecure connections. Use miniature lights that produce less heat and turn them off when leaving and retiring at night to reduce drying. Newer LED holiday lights are a good value and decrease fire risk by staying cooler.

Never use candles on Christmas trees, replace any worn or questionable decorations, and strategically position small and fragile ornaments out of the reach of pets and small children to prevent accidental damage.

A Christmas tree needs a constant supply of water, which must be topped up regularly. When the tree is first saw off an inch (2. 5cm) from its base and placed in water, it may absorb up to 4 liters of water over the first 24 hours, especially if the tree has dried out from wind or a heated car on the way home. A rough rule of thumb is that a Christmas tree can absorb one liter of water for every inch (2. 5cm) diameter of the trunk per day. Regular water is essential for the tree’s vitality and prevents it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.

  • I always wondered how to place the ribbon on a Christmas tree. There is a small tree in my bedroom that I keep up all year in honor of my daughter that passed 11 years ago. She loved Christmas! Ribbon is going on her tree this year! Thank you for all the ideas! Plus I love that you paused and played with your pup! So sweet! 🥰

  • Word of advice with for all of you perusal this…..USE PIPE CLEANERS OR ZIPTIES ALWAYS with your ribbon! Keep them attached to your ribbon when you dismantle your tree and you’ll be ready to go for next year! Trust me when i tell you to attach your ribbon or you’ll be messing with it the entire holiday season

  • It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to watch episodes and my goodness, thank you for reminding me what a blessing you are! Beautiful tree! I’ve never decorated my (live) trees like this but you have given me wonderful ideas for this year🥰 Then, add to to it your beautiful personality on top of that….thank you, thank you!!! Continuing to pray for you 🙌🏼

  • Good afternoon Leslie! Great timing on this tree tutorial! I feel like I can never get my tree “right” so I always dread it and put it off until the last thing to decorate! Bless you because you have taught me new things to do! Your tree is beautiful and the star topper and foliage shape reminds me of the Cross! What a blessing! Thank you so much! 🎄💕

I started a few days ago taking everything down from attic with my grandkids 6 and 4 what a big help they were lol tree 🌲 is complete now working on the Christmas village that takes a few days to a week depends on energy lol . psttttttttt say hi to Jason . hope he’s feeling as best as he can . and I truly hope your coping as best as you can 🌻🌻🌻

  • Hi love how u decorated your tree but can u PLEASE tell me the brand name of your tree & what it is called since many make different type of trees. I’d like to get that tree. Thanks so much, appreciate it if u could let me know. Did u buy that tree online or in a store if so which one. Thanks again & Merry Christmas

  • Lots of great tips and gorgeous colours – your tree is going to be so pretty. I always use floral wire or paddle wire to wire my ornaments to my tree (an old Martha Stewart trick) but the best part is that you can wire an ornament to the top of a branch to fill a space when you run out of picks and nobody will ever know it is upside down unless you tell them.

  • ♥️🐾🐾♥️I just love the opening of your Christmas season articles! It’s so beautiful and reminds me of the opening of one of my favorite Christmas movies. Leslie you are such an inspiration and joy to watch and it really touched my heart when you paused the article to pay some attention to your sweet Evie. Their time with us is short enough as it is so any opportunity we can grab to make the most of it with them is time well spent. I can’t wait till next week for your home tour and to see your finished tree and other decorations. I also truly appreciate that you always make sure to point out what the reason for the season is and why we celebrate it. I can’t wait for Sunday afternoons and your newest article! You and Jason are in my prayers daily. ♥️🛐♥️

  • Off to watch this article. Just wanted you to know I LOVED your Christmas decorating article in your bedroom!!!🎄 That photo you took of your parents is priceless! I could feel your love for them. I feel the same exact way about my parents who are now in Heaven. Today would have been their 74th anniversary.

  • I have this same tree and I love it! I always love to see how others put ribbon and bulbs on and yours is spot on. I start mine up under my topper however with 2 loops (like a bow with ribbon tales pointing upwards and then billows, ribbon tale and start over. I use 3 different ribbons. Two together for my main and a different for an accent. Lots of picks and sprays and bulb clusters and ending with 3 different specialty bulbs. I do 5 trees so I’ve already started decorating. My main tree is done. I started one of my foyer trees this morning, took a break and set up the Christmas village. I will be decorating for the next 2 weeks at least.

  • Absolutely beautiful! I switched to a 7.5’ flocked pre-lit skinny tree last year and I’m using it again this year. I put it up today and added the pastel bead garland that I made last year. Tomorrow I’ll do ornaments. I’m still unsure if I’m going to add ribbons. I bought beautiful pastel, velvet, wide ribbon that’s wired. On 2/1/21, we moved away from our family because of my husband’s job. It’s just not the same without my children. Honestly, I don’t know why I even waste my time doing the tree, only the 2 of us will see it. I miss my girls and having no F&F here, it makes the holidays hard. Frozen pizza for Thanksgiving anyone? 🫤

  • Leslie, thank you so much for today’s article! Love your ideas. My fav is the “Joy to the World” (might even look cute with plaques like Joy, Peace, Love, Merry, etc!) and also twisting the ornament holders around the branch. That truly looks SO much nicer than hanging them for sure! Also love all the ribbon ideas. I hope you and Jason have a wonderful, blessed Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Sometimes someone will show you something that is brilliant in its simplicity. I have been decorating trees for almost 50 years and I never thought of decorating the top first. Makes the best sense. Your methods are easy and the end result is beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Hope you and husband have a beautiful holiday season.

  • What a GORGEOUS TREE and such AMAZING ideas for how to decorate the tree. I just love the suggestions, and I think I will use ALL of them….is that okay, or would you say pick one ribbon style or one hanging style?!? Your attitude towards LIFE is inspiring my friend-I pray Gods Grace continues to bless and guide you! Sending hugs and prayer! 🙏💛💛🙏

  • Beautiful! I put my tree up today, but it has a completely different look. We have a kitten, just over a year old, who destroyed the tree last year when he was tiny and ever so cute! My thought this year was to hope he would be over it, but knowing his personality, I opted to try to cat-proof it instead. We got a new, inexpensive pre-lit tree so he couldn’t pull the lights off. I got a battery lit, variegated holly garland with red berries and wrapped it around the trunk where he couldn’t dislodge it. I added red and gold bows to the boughs, tied on with pipe cleaners. I made a few pipe cleaner curls, bows and stars to fill in a bit, all twisted onto the branches. We finished with a small topper, wired on, and tied the whole thing to a ceiling hook with invisible fishing line. It’s not fancy, but it looks festive. The kitten, now MUCH larger than last year, has already been up and down twice, but most things have stayed on! It will be my daily meditation to fix the tree each morning 🙂 He’s (mostly) worth it ❤

  • I’ve always wanted a “decorator tree” and I pester my husband every year for one. Well…he is all about the nostalgia value of a Christmas tree with all our old ornaments, ornaments passed down from deceased family members, etc. and refuses to consider a change. And you know what? Every year after the tree is up and decorated, I am so happy he keeps insisting. So many memories are hanging on our tree. Guess I will have to admire others’ beautiful trees (like yours) and be content with our sweet memory tree!

  • This has given me the confidence to try the ribbon, but the ball cluster is something I’ve not seen before. Taking down fall and putting it all way and then pulling everything out for Christmas is no JOKE! It was like a 12 hr day for me w/ having a fully finished basement that gets decked out too. Also wanted to say you looked really nice in your dark blue shirt, very flattering to you.
