How do you design a laundry room?
A functional laundry room layout is crucial for its functionality and the overall experience of using the space. It should focus on the utilities, such as a 220-volt power outlet for a dryer and hot and cold water lines for a washing machine. The layout should also consider the requirements for a dryer exhaust and washer outflow, as well as the square footage to accommodate both machines and their functional requirements like drain height, ventilation, and power.
A utility sink or laundry tub is often included in the layout, as it is larger than a kitchen sink and made of sturdy materials intended to handle dirty tasks. It can be used for soaking or pretreating grimy items, hand-washing delicate clothing, cleaning up after crafts or outdoor projects, watering houseplants, cleaning housekeeping items like mops and brushes, or simply washing hands. If a sink is not available, a washing machine with a built-in pretreat station can be considered.
In summary, a functional laundry room layout should prioritize utility, storage, and lighting to maximize space and make the space enjoyable and functional. By considering these factors, a functional laundry room can be designed that enhances the overall functionality and appeal of the space.
Can you put a dryer in a basement?
Installing a washer and dryer in your basement requires the right space, including the necessary hookups and storage. If your basement lacks these hookups, you’ll need to have them installed. An electrician should inspect your home to ensure it can handle the added electrical load and may need to install a circuit breaker to prevent fires. This process requires careful planning and preparation to ensure the proper functioning of your laundry machines.
How do I hide the pipes in my basement laundry room?
Building shelves around or in front of laundry pipework is a cost-effective and easy way to hide it from view. Create floor-to-ceiling shelves and create a cavity within them to allow space for the pipework without taking up extra floor space. These shelves can also be used to hold trinkets, photo frames, and books to distract people from the plumbing behind it.
Using wood pipe covers can also be used to conceal the room’s pipework. Purchase these covers at a craft store or online, and apply them yourself. However, ensure to measure the height, length, and width of the pipes correctly to ensure the wrappings cover the pipes entirely without touching them directly.
What flooring to use in basement laundry room?
For laundry rooms with high moisture levels, choose products with superior water resistance and durability like luxury vinyl plank, porcelain tile, and waterproof laminate. Porcelain tiles are denser and more water-resistant, making them ideal for high-moisture areas. They are generally the superior choice for longevity and resilience, especially in laundry rooms with frequent spills, humidity, and heavy foot traffic. When choosing between porcelain and ceramic tiles, consider durability and moisture resistance.
Is it OK to store clothes in basement?
It is recommended that clothing be stored in a cool, dry environment, as exposure to moisture can cause deterioration.
What is the ideal placement of a laundry room?
The location of a laundry room is crucial for its functionality. It should be on the main floor or near bedrooms to minimize the distance needed to carry dirty clothes. Positioning near existing plumbing lines can simplify installation and reduce costs. Proper ventilation is essential for expelling moisture and odors. Additionally, the room should be away from quiet spaces like bedrooms and living areas, such as basements, garages, or utility areas, to minimize noise impact. By considering these factors, you can ensure a comfortable and efficient laundry room.
Is a laundry room in the basement a good idea?
Adding a laundry room to your basement can enhance your home’s layout without compromising design. It can reduce noise, minimize water damage, and create a dream laundry space. However, planning and reworking plumbing and electricity may be necessary. Before starting your laundry setup, ensure you have all necessary items in place to avoid utility or permit issues. Here are five things to consider before adding a washer and dryer to your basement:
- Determine the size of your basement and the space you want to use.
- Determine the plumbing and electricity connections in your basement.
- Determine the best location for your laundry appliances.
- Consider the potential for water damage and potential utility issues.
How can I make my basement laundry room nice?
This article provides 26 basement laundry room ideas to make the chore of laundry more interesting. These ideas include adding a pop of color, installing statement hardware, hanging a statement light fixture, focusing on flooring, not skipping decor, going all-white, hanging plants, and using a vintage-style rug. The laundry room can be a stylish addition to any basement space, making laundry day more enjoyable. The design can be paired with the rest of the home’s style to create cohesiveness and flow.
The ideas are applicable to any style, whether it’s modern, rustic, farmhouse, eclectic, contemporary, or neutral. Regardless of the size and budget, these basement laundry rooms offer inspiration in color schemes, functional features, material choices, and fun design elements.
Does a laundry room require a floor drain?
The 2017 IRC code does not mandate floor drains in laundry rooms, but they are often included for emergency drainage or other drainage needs. Gas-fired clothes dryers are not “vented”, but exhaust systems must terminate to the exterior. The exhaust duct must terminate outside and be equipped with a backdraft damper, with screens not permitted. The duct should terminate at least 3 feet from an opening and be sealed with approved sealing tape or mastic. Screws and fasteners can connect ducts, provided they penetrate up to 1/8 inch into the inside of the dryer exhaust duct.
What flooring is not recommended for basements?
Hardwood and laminate flooring are not recommended for basements due to their potential for mold and water damage, which can cause warping. Laminate flooring, made from a wood byproduct core, can also cause damage to laminate planks if moisture seeps through the subfloor. Hardwood flooring is suitable for the first and second floors of the home.
Waterproof flooring is crucial for basement durability and longevity. Luxury vinyl flooring is an excellent choice due to its exceptional water resistance, providing a waterproof barrier against dampness and flooding. Ceramic tile or porcelain tile flooring is another top contender for basement flooring due to their impervious nature, preventing water damage and providing a stylish aesthetic. Prioritizing waterproof features not only increases the lifespan of your investment but also protects your space against challenges in below-grade environments.
What is a must-have in a laundry room?
The laundry storage area is equipped with a variety of built-in features, including wall cabinets, floating shelves, glass-front cabinets, and wheeled laundry baskets, which facilitate the convenient sorting and organization of lightweight items.
📹 Basement Laundry Room Makeover “One Weekend Better!”
Ours is the CLASSIC OVERHEAD GARAGE STORAGE RACK 2’X8′ IN WHITE I am still amazed every time by the power of paint, …
Fantastic result! I knew you had it in you all along. Sometimes when we are frustrated and in the thick of things we begin to doubt ourselves, but the key is to take a break, eat, hydrate, then hit it again. Sam, you are so glad to have your dad to help you with these projects. Please extend a thank you to him from a viewer who no longer has a father to rely on. They are the GOATs!
So stoked to see a vid from you this morning 🥳 What a beautiful job! Love seeing you and your dad working together. I’ve had the incredible privilege of having what I refer to as a ‘luxe’ laundry room in 2 homes. No regrets. Also no regrets about having a large sink in the laundry as well! I’m sure you’ve already seen just how handy it is. Thanks for sharing with us.
Wow, wow, wow, you and your father completed an amazing Transformation of your basement! The laundry room looks stunningly cool, and I especially appreciate how you geniously laid down the tile floor and the floating shelves! Your choice of the wooden slats on the ceiling was absolutely genius! You are a skilled “Do it Yourself (DIY)” master! Well done young lady!
A tip for the countertops. When cutting laminate I always seal the cut end with silicone to keep water out & help out last a lot longer. Particularly important in kitchens & laundries. Nice work, looks great! 😘 Also wondering how your floorplan for upstairs aligns with the basement. Could you install a laundry chute somewhere?
Love EVERYTHING about this. What a transformation!!!! My dream is to hit the lottery & have you come fix up my house ! (I need to buy one, lol !) P.s. I think your basement is about the size of my apartment! Lol ! I DREAM of having a laundry room. Have bern dragging laundry to a laundromat for YEARS – it gets OLD ! P.s. great to see your dad. Makes me miss my dad, he died years ago. I miss him still.
This popped up and your voice seemed familiar not sure why and at the end when you made the pue pue sound, I was like that sounds like the same thing DIY Dani, and then I realised that’s where I recognized your voice from, i have seen you collaborate with Dani. Lol What a beautiful make over, the boards on the ceiling are a good solution I think it looks better than drywall. I would like to replace my kitchen countertops, the ones you installed look like it wouldn’t be to hard for my diy skills.😊
I need to get the same french drain waterproofing done to my own basement and was hoping you would talk about that process a bit. Did you contact multiple contractors and have them bid the job? How long did it take? What was the price-range? My basement is also ~750 sq feet and would LOVE to know all these things. 🙏
8 and half minutes in and I have to say I liver the utility hallway. That stuff is a pain if just plastered(or drywalled) over with a small door opening to a panel. Also glad you love the ceiling, but I could not handle that… creepy basement + open slate space in the ceiling, I would be constantly feeling like something is perusal me from above.
SAM! I MISSED YOU – and your DAD! What happened! Are you OK?!!! Saturday is not the same without Sam. You know that! And yes Sam, I had the basement team (Foundation Recovery) do work on our basement. Dried it out but it was a NIGHTMARE. Jackhammers and concrete removal and all of that. And then we had to rip out the walls pre-install to studs and then we had to refinish the basement. Not fun during covid. (: Either way, worth every penny. We would literally have 2 – 3 floods a year to the point that I was up for 36 – 48 hours with shop vacs to prevent total damage to the basement. Well worth it though. Every penny. Now I can sleep at night!
That looks fantastic! I think my favorite bit is the ceiling. It really finishes the space without closing you in, like a lot of low drywall ceilings in basements. I also think a great big sink in a basement just makes sense…there are so many things that you don’t want to use the kitchen or bathroom sinks for, and a big basement sink works really nicely.
Although it’s beautiful, it wouldn’t function for me. I’d have the appliances over to the end of the area, so I’d have a larger counter top to fold laundry on(but it looks like you have plenty of space to install a table for that purpose). I’m glad you did it that way though, so we can see what we would want in a laundry room for ourselves. I also like that you showed us some tricks for making things work, when you don’t think you can(the pipework in the ceiling). That can only come with experience, and thinking ‘outside the box’! Great job, and you’ve earned a sub!
This turned out absolutely beautiful! I have a 1008 square foot basement with 2 bedrooms. I would love to be able to fix up my laundry room and put in a bathroom. You and your dad are a powerhouse team. My dad, when he was alive, was an electrician. I would ask him to come fix something. And he would draw on a piece of paper and tell me how to do it. So I love to see when dad’s will help their children. Thankfully, in life, I came across other people. that would show me how when I learned.
Just found this website and I must admit its lovely to see the work you have done here! Just a question though: what with the risers for the machines? We don’t use those here in the UK, so I’m curious. Here, the machines are installed on the floor and the worktop would have run the full length right over the top of them.
Finally got to watch the whole article!😅 looks really good, and like I said on Instagram I think, I am REALLY considering some of those RTA cabinets for a kitchen island and a wall in our kitchen that is now just a metal baker’s rack. Yes, I have all the tools to build cabinets but by the time I make or buy and then paint the doors I’ll probably be ahead on cost and definitely WAY ahead on time. Also, I love that Aero is pretty much in every shot of this article (except the ones with wet stuff, of course) 🐶😍
Hmmmm… daddy coming to help but late to arrive the conversation should go something like, ‘hi dad, I’m so happy to see you and I’m so grateful for your help, do you need a cup of coffee before we get started? Have I told you lately how much I love and appreciate you?’ Accompanied with hugs and a kiss.
I have the exact sink in my 1950 cottage basement. Since most new laundry sinks are single anyway, I put a board over one side to use as a mini counter if I need a quick cutting surface, etc. Also,if you found a pretty sheet or tablecloth at the thrift store, you could hang it behind the washer and dryer by attaching it to the back shelf runner. (and still get to the knobs and hose when you need to) It came out great and very functional.🙌🏻
Hi Hillary, fellow diy on a dime person here. You may be able to use double sided velcro and some fabric to make a skirt for that cast iron sink. I think the sink is charming and such a great size. I have taken some curtains and put on a hanging rod to cover all the connections behind my washer and dryer too. That room looks amazing 👏 Great job!
Laundry area looks so great, love the floral towels, and the painted sink too.. Perfect ❤️ I think your wise to make a stock pile area, the prices are going higher and higher every time I go food shopping. I am also stocking up on items that can be put on a stock pile shelf. My laundry room is right off the kitchen, but I have it decorated Parisian theme, I have a canvas of two lovers walking by the Eiffel Tower and my detergent are in a Parisian themed containers, just these little things can make it fun to do laundry.
As a wife with an old house and an old basement, I understand. I think your basement looks fabulous !!!! I think you need to rethink getting rid of that old sink. It’s so handy to have something like that for messy jobs. I have always wanted an utility sink. Also, a basement is a place, a perfect place for those necessary, not glamorous parts of life. And you made it look pretty. I love it. And yes, clean, is a big part of looking good.
Very sweet area, very well done. 🙂 I grew up with those old basement sinks and would almost give my eyeteeth to have one now. The cracked left side is still usable: hang dripping-wet coats to dry over it and use it as a drainer for things washed in the right side are two ideas. You have a lovely website! TFS.
I attached a curtain rod to the underside of my laundry shelf. I placed it about three inches from the wall. Just far enough away from the wall to conceal pipes but far enough back to sit behind the washer-dryer. I made a short (24″ … longer than a valance, shorter than the average tier) curtain out of a piece of white dotted swiss fabric I had laying around. Honestly, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. Lol. I spend a LOT of time in that room so seeing that lovely little dotted swiss backdrop makes me happy!
Hillary, I absolutely Love this!!! The small improvements make a Big impact! I can’t agree more with “Clean is Free!” A motto we live by. The slop sink really isn’t bad at all; the paint is lovely. I would not replace. Give it a good scrub down inside, paint the base and add some inexpensive plastic baskets underneath (more storage for paint or cleaning supplies), and perhaps add a fabric skirt (coordinating traditional plaid?) attached with stick on Velcro to hide and add more of that cheery charm. There are also adorable vintage reproduction faucets that include a soap dish that could be added later. Also a washboard would be so nostalgic and useful. Tfs, ❤️it!
Great makeover. Love the mindset of embracing the not-so-fun tasks like laundry with a change in perspective that involves a little bit of effort to making it as enjoyable as possible. Clean is free? Love that. Tidy is free too 😉. Often we think of a makeover as something that needs to cost money yet cleaning and tidying go a long way in making a space over. Thanks for the inspiration. Have a lovely day 😊.
Hello Hilary! Wow, it looks wonderful 😁🧺. Those little touches always make such a difference. An idea for the slop sink, maybe you can have Dan cut a board to lay on top of it to cover. And notch out where the faucet is, that way air can still flow through. You can paint or stain it and it’ll hide the inside that you don’t like 😊. Have a nice day today and enjoy the weather ☺️☀️.
Okay, so now I really need to clean up my laundry room lol. Looks fantastic! If you end up keeping the sink, which does suit the Old World vibe, you could paint the inside of it. I’m guessing there’s a waterproof paint for that, maybe outdoor or epoxy? I’m guessing you would already know the right type to use with all your painting experience. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing this. We, too, have ugly cinderblock in our basement and laundry area, and we don’t want to spend a fortune on it. Sure, I’d love a laundry room upstairs with sheetrock walls and nice cabinets, but it’s not going to happen. You’ve inspired me to make the best of our laundry area.
Hilary, I am really enjoying this vlog, you gave me a lot of ideas and inspiration- thank you! Also I was wondering about your washing machine and dryer, is there anyway you’d share with me their make and model and your opinion on if you truly like them, how long you’ve had them. I plan on purchasing a washer and dryer within the next 2 weeks but I would like some input. I like the look of yours, so I’m curious. Tia
You really made this space bright and, dare I say, pretty? Those shelves will be such a help and I love that you can hang clothes to dry as well. I was so excited when we were able to move our laundry out of the basement that I just kept telling my husband how happy and grateful I was for a tiled floor, sheetrock, and two wall hung cabinets. He finally asked me if the dirty clothes were happier, too! 🤣
Hillary, your articles are so encouraging!! I am having some iron issues and go for infusions weekly. I usually go for 6weeks every 6months. This time I went way to long and just started my infusions last week so tomorrow will be my 2nd week. I am so exhausted and just want to sleep but on the other hand I have so much to do. After perusal your article I have a little energy to do something for a couple hours. Please know that your articles are looked forward to by so many tired mamas. God is using you in ways you probably dont even realize. Thank you! I know you have so much on your plate and finding time for your website can probably be hard sometimes but I promise you it is worth it. I thank God for articles like yours today!!!! Happy Sunday!!! God bless you and your sweet family!!!! 🙏❤🙏❤
You were in the middle of your basement reno right before we started ours. My husband and I were not 100% satisfied with the idea of enclosing so much of the open space for storage. When I saw how you did your laundry room I showed my husband and we basically did the exact same thing, right down to the doors. We absolutely LOVE it, it looks great while still offering storage and not taking up so much room that we were wanting to finish. Thank you so much!
When we finished our basement, we included the laundry room as well, even though it is enclosed with bifold doors. We even enclosed our hot water heater (in a closet with a door) inside the laundry area and hung a cabinet for storage and shelf for hanging things. We did it ourselves too, so not a lot of extra time or expense and I am so glad we did.
