Fashion has a significant impact on the planet, contributing to 8-10% of global emissions and accounting for one-fifth of the 300 million tons of plastic. The UK Youth Climate Coalition suggests that interventions promoting sustainable fashion consumption should focus on developing a personal responsibility (PN) that prioritizes the environment. The fashion industry produces up to 10 of the global carbon dioxide output and accounts for one-fifth of the 300 million tons of plastic.
Malcolm Barnard’s book Fashion as Communication discussed the idea that fashion and clothes work as a way to communicate. People are more concerned about external fashion because they are judged by their looks. Some people appreciate extra functionality and design, while others think they are fine within the context they are designed in. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are redefining outdoor lifestyles through clothing, and it is important to consider internal and external factors that affect style.
Fashion is concerned with “what’s out there” – fashion items available for purchase in stores or online. Not all fashion brands work with seasonal collections, and some intentionally do not design according to seasons. Style is influenced by external factors to an extent, as everyone lives in a fashion vacuum and needs inspiration. A fashion trend’s life cycle can be divided into five stages: introduction, rise, peak, decline, and obsolescence. Different fashion designers reflect this inspiration in their work.

What do fashion designers do all day?
Fashion designers are highly competitive professionals who must constantly adapt to changing tastes and sensibilities in the fashion industry. They are involved in every phase of designing, showing, and producing clothing, from bathing suits to evening gowns. To succeed in this challenging field, designers must have talent, vision, determination, and ambition.
To become a fashion designer, one should have a good eye for color, style, and shape, an ability to sketch, and some formal preparation in design. An excellent portfolio is a must for the job search, and a two- or four-year degree in fashion design is helpful. Knowledge of textiles and familiarity with various fabrics is also essential, but no formal certification is required. Candidates should have a working knowledge of business and marketing.
The hours for a fashion designer are long, and the initial pay is very limited. The chances of becoming an internationally famous designer are roughly 160, 000:1. The invention of the sewing machine by Elias Howe in 1846 opened up cheap reproducible garments to the public, allowing individuals to rapidly design and commission their own wardrobes. However, the concept of fashion has become a democratic principle, and as the fashion market expands, pockets of smaller, more unique brands of clothing will be marketed over television, the Internet, and the mail. The ability to reach large numbers of people for little cost will determine if this future is real or merely a pipe dream for young, aspiring fashion designers.
What is the main idea of fashion?
Fashion is not just a global industry, but also a cultural and social phenomenon driven by the desire for the new. It is open to change and cannot fully control fashion. Christian Dior’s first couture collection, “new”, was unveiled in 1947, featuring two lines: 8 and Corolle, referring to the botanical term for its petals. The bar suit was an upside-down flower, featuring a full pleated skirt, fine black wool crêpe over a stiffened taffeta petticoat, and a natural silk tussore jacket. The sepal, the green protective layer surrounding the petals, is tightly fitted at the waist and extending out over padded hips.

Fashion refers to the creation of clothing, footwear, accessories, cosmetics, and jewelry with different cultural aesthetics, showcasing distinctive ways of dressing as signifiers of social status, self-expression, and group belonging. Originating from the Latin word “facere”, fashion describes the manufacturing, mixing, and wearing of outfits adorned with specific cultural aesthetics, patterns, motifs, shapes, and cuts. The rise in mass production of commodities and clothing at lower prices and global reach has led to an urgent issue of reducing fashion’s environmental impact and improving sustainability.
The French word “mode” meaning “fashion” dates back to 1482, while the English word “in style” dates only to the 16th century. Other words related to style and appeal include “elegance” in the 12th and 13th century Old French, and “cointerie”, which refers to making oneself more attractive to others through style or artifice in grooming and dress.

Fashion designers create functional and aesthetically pleasing clothing for everyday wear, considering the wearer and the situation. They work with a wide range of materials, colors, patterns, and styles, with some garments being made specifically for individual occasions. Today, most clothing is designed for the mass market, particularly casual and everyday wear, known as ready-to-wear or fast fashion. Designers can work full-time for a fashion house, freelance, or set up their own labels.
Some designers cater to specialty stores or high-end department stores, creating original garments and following established trends. Most designers work for apparel manufacturers, creating designs for men’s, women’s, and children’s fashions for the mass market. Large designer brands like Abercrombie and Fitch, Justice, or Juicy are likely designed by a team of individual designers under the direction of a design director. Some designers choose to set up their own labels, while others work for specialty stores or high-end department stores.

Just my thought…I wish people would focus more on cost per wear than the selling price. If a clothing item cost $35-$50 but is only worn once vs. a item that has a better fabric content and made better that cost more upfront but is worn many times for multiple years would be cheaper in the long run🤷♀️
