The author discusses their experience with the “Error Processing Interior” problem in Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and suggests that they will keep their internal file size under 50MB to prevent future issues. They also mention that they had to scale down images and dpi to bring the file size down, especially since the book has a two-page view.

The author shares their experience with creating a CreateSpace print version of their e-book, which led to some error messages. The author discovered that Microsoft Word has a bug that can cause issues with the font’s DPI. To resolve these issues, they recommend uploading the manuscript to KDP and running it through their Interior Reviewer.

When designing a full print book cover for KDP, the spine width needs to be calculated based on the final page count. If there are any errors, they will be informed and fixed. To ensure the desired outcome, upload a right-sized, error-free PDF with mirrored and adequate (at least 0.5 inch) dimensions.

To improve the quality of the images, they recommend using a batch converter that coversts all images to 300 dpi, such as Photoshop or Faststone image viewer. They also advise using images with a resolution of at least 600 DPI and avoiding overlaying tones with different angles, sizes, or spacing.

The author also mentions that they have set their software to save files in the right format, such as MS Word limiting images to 199 dpi unless instructed otherwise. To increase graphic quality by increasing the dpi, they suggest using a mix of Excel and Word.

  • Hello, I stumbled onto your article. I am encountering this same error message “There was a problem processing your interior Please check your file and try again” (My cover as well BTW) However, I am trying to publish a journal, so there are no pictures or fonts to reject. I just don’t get why KDP is rejecting a LOW CONTENT wordless journal? Please help!

  • FYI: I have published two books with KDP without this issue. I experienced it for the first the time while working on my third book. The only way I could resolve it was by removing all of the pictures. The file containing text only uploaded error free. I then added back the pictures and charts one at a time and uploaded the file after each picture was added back thinking that I should be able to isolate the picture causing the error. However, I eventually added back all 26 images one at a time and the final file (same content as the file that caused the error) containing all of the original pictures and charts, uploaded with no errors and I was able to order a draft. The problem is, I do not understand what caused the error and why I was able to resolve it in the way that I did.

  • Thank you so much for the article! This has been VERY helpful. I’m curious why the design team doesn’t troubleshoot this? Is this normal for designers to only design the cover and interior and for the client to take care of the uploading. Not being sarcastic I’m just learning how this process works! Thank you!

  • Just discovered this article yesterday. I had a similar issue. KDP was spitting out a processing error for both an interior and pdf cover. I had uploaded a 63 page notebook. KDP said it needed 72 pages! On further investigation, there was neither an error with my interior or pdf cover. It turned out the issue was being caused by the “paper choice” I’d made in the initial set up within KDP. Once I re-selected a new paper choice, in my case Premium with colour etc, I launched the previewer, and everything was good to go!

  • You lifted my spirits . I’ve tried to publish my two first books and receive this message . I’ve devoted so many hours to tutorials and books to learn as a beginner to adobe acrobat pro. I need step by step to fix this error. Interior Add 0.125″ (3.2 mm) to your book’s page width and 0.25″ (6.4 mm) to the page height to ensure that the images in your manuscript extend beyond the edge of the page. Once you have added the size, extend any images or backgrounds that you want to reach all the way to the edge of the page 0.125″ (3.2 mm) beyond the trim line. For 8.50 x 11.00 I have been in preflight to add bleed so that illustrations can fall off the page but I do not know how to stretch pages .

  • Another issue is, during the publication process, (putting all the info in, book size and stuff), on the previous page where you type description etc, there is an option that says, LARGE PRINT TEXT. You have to click on the large print tick box if you have any fonts/writing that is over 16pt, my color book wouldn’t upload, until i ticked that large print box

  • Thank you for your most helpful article. I do have Adobe Acrobat Pro, but I can’t get the panel that you show for Print Production. Can you create a article about using Print Production in Acrobat Pro, or be able to recommend another article that shows how it works. I’m on a PC in case that matters. My margins were fine, but my headers and footers were not in the safe zone, also I had hidden text frames – in a million years I wouldn’t have figured that out. Thank you

  • hi! this is so helpful. We just uploaded our manuscript and it is telling us this error “Update the pagination in your manuscript file so that the main content begins with the correct page number. See examples on PDF page(s) 5. It’s typical for page numbers to start at the first chapter.” Could you please tell me what this means? We start on page 7 with acknowledgements. Page 5 is the dedication. Would it be as simple as numbering it starting page 5?

  • I know this is an old post, but boy am I glad you made it! I have been uploading to KDP for about a year and a half and not once have I ever had that error with over 100 books. Of course I had just cancelled my subscription to Adobe as I switched over to Affinity Products. However, once I had Adobe Acrobat Pro and was back in bed with Adobe (grrr!), the error showed right up. As you suggested it was a font issue – thank God for Master Pages, lol! I had changed minor things 10 times before finally found your article. Thank you, thank you! 👍

  • Hey John, do you know how I can fix this problem? Error processing interior your uploaded file exceeds our maximum limit. Based on your selected print options, the maximum number of pages allowed is 590. My book page total is 625 pages. I tried to uploaded via PDF. The puzzles pages are actually 500 but the solutions cause the book to run to the 625 pages. Any idea what I can do to get this interior upload?

  • This article is a little old, but I thought I would leave my experience in case it helps someone in the future. I received the same message for one of my print editions, nothing was highlighted, so I checked back with Bowker to see if there were any differences with the information on my ISBN. Title was the same, author name the same, etc… The Lord blessed, I finally realized I’d spelled my imprint differently. The name of my publishing company is The Rebel Christian Publishing LLC, on Bowker it is simply listed as The Rebel Christian Publishing. I had to go back into KDP, remove the LLC from the imprint and everything worked after that. Thank God. *It is worth noting that “LLC” is listed on the publisher’s name for the Kindle version of that book–that went through without any issues.* I guess the print publishing has stricter guidelines? I don’t know.

  • Hi, Sheila ~ Thank you for your article. I had the same issue, and after perusal your article and contacting KDP, which was immediate like you shared, it was a “corrupted comma” that I had in my “Imprint Title” (ScriptArt, LLC) that needed to be replaced, then save page, then the book save again in the PDF Preview. Voila! Many thanks for your article.

  • Oh my gosh, I’m having this exact same problem two years later after this article!!! Tried to publish my first book back in May 2022 and here it is almost the end of July and still can’t publish because of these stupid error messages! I’m about to give it up and just pay to publish through IngramSpark again! You’d think KDP would have fixed these problems by now! Thanks for this article … at least now I know I’m not the only one and am not crazy (although KDP is trying to get me there!). Guess I’ll have to call Bowker on Monday and have them manually change my book title/subtitle. Same problem. Thanks again, Sheila.

  • Even though my title looked exactly the same, I still went into Bowker and copied my Title AND Subtitle directly from Bowker and pasted it into KDP exactly how it was listed. And it worked! Maybe there was a space after the last word that I couldn’t see or something like that. I’m just glad it worked. Thank you for this article. It was very helpful. Much success in your writing career! 🙂
