Apartment Decoration Mistakes To Avoid?

Four interior designers have identified six main issues they encounter when working with apartment-dwelling clients. To maximize the potential of your living space, avoid these common mistakes:

  1. Choosing peel and stick wallpaper instead of a floating shelf arrangement.
  2. Purchasing a rug that is too small, ordering furniture that is too large, skimping on lighting, not asking about possible upgrades, hesitating to add color, and investing in the wrong pieces.
  3. Using ceiling fans, forgetting to measure your rug, not lining up countertops seams, not layering enough, overlooking proportion, hanging art at the wrong level, and overcrowding too much.
  4. Overcrowding too much, overcrowding the room, and overcrowding too much.
  5. Buying furniture and appliances before measuring, buying all furniture and appliances in one go, filling the space too quickly, and buying all items in one go.
  6. Avoid purchasing furniture that is either too big or too small for your space, as this can make your apartment feel cramped. Instead, buy what will fit the color scheme and design aesthetic of your home, while maintaining quality.

In summary, there are numerous apartment decorating ideas available, but the approach depends on the size and type of space. It’s essential to avoid common mistakes and focus on creating a comfortable and functional living space.

  • I am moving to a new appartement with my son in 3 weeks. So exited about it! And all ready learning so much before I start to decorate and install all the thing there 🙂 Thank you for the tips, very helpfu. It made me more confident that I can do it myself without asking a man friend to do it or pay a lot for someone to do it.

  • I just swapped my shower head last year, and it is amazing. So luxurious! Also, you’ve inspired me to tackle the old dark wood in my entry hallway that makes it gloomy. I’m going to try elevating the space with light wood peel and stick. (And maybe some new door pulls.) I love all your articles, they’re so inspirational (and doable)!

  • Hi from Tuskegee. You have a really helpful website and it’s nice to see that others do some of the same upgrades to rentals. I changed out my shower head years ago for a luxury one that I bought from Sam’s with a waterfall, a spa mister, a massage and a wave pulsar feature with 3 other normal settings. The light fixture globes as well get replaced. As far as painting, they paint every 2 years or I can request to get the paint from them and freshen it up. I have been using toilet bowl cleaner for decades because it not only cleans grout but it is very effective in the tub with texture and tiled walls of a shower. I’ve placed lights under cabinets before but I’m about to get the ones that go in the hinges. They come on when you open the cabinets. Also, changing the light switch is and plug cover iis a good one f you want different colors. I just keep a storage box or bin for everything that came with apartment to put it all back when I’m ready to leave. The built ins I believe I will try soon. Thanks for sharing.💕

  • Darling! What wonderful advice all around – not just for renters! I put cordless, rechargeable flat lights in my unlit linen, hall and small storage closets before putting our house on the market – and they are such a MASSIVE luxury upgrade that I’m annoyed I didn’t do it years ago so I could enjoy my efforts! They sit in a bracket held up by 3M pressure tape so you can take them down, plug them in to recharge and hang them up again – easy-peasy! 💖

  • Hey! Ani from ATL here. I remember you mentioning the shower light in another article. Thanks for the reminder, I will be getting one TODAY. And yooooo miter SHEARS?!?!?! I’ve been so intimidated to do any projects with mitered corners because my math don’t be mathin’ lol! I’ll be getting those along with the dollar tree toilet bowl cleaner. This was a really good article!

  • Love your ideas and your decorating tips. Is that a round mirror above your kitchen sink .If so I Iike the idea Thank you and I’ll keep following you.I’m working on decorating an old house I’m renting. Which I really love here in S.C.the only problem is its hard to hang pictures and mirrors on these concrete masonry walls is there a special drill that I need to use pls help because masonry nails just don’t do the job and any suggestions would be Great Thank you.

  • Some of these are great, I’ve done some I actually just put in a new shower head in my bathroom. Sorry to say I did the electrical tape in my son bathroom but I didn’t like it all all it didn’t look good, but I did another diy that was also cheap. I bought a baseboard about $8 spray painted black (already had on hand) bought come command strips and it’s been holding up very well.

  • Love your website and your rental friendly ideas and DIYs. 🧡 A few years ago I change the plain doorknobs to decorative doorknobs on my hallway laundry room doors and closet doors. I definitely love the satin silver look,it’s so sophisticated. Next is my shower head. The tape on the mirror is genius!!!

  • Thank you for all your great advice, I love your website because it really gives me ways to just give it a try, instead of being scared…I’m really starting to get tired of all these dollar store diys because it seems like all repeats, don’t get me wrong I love dollar store diys but nowadays It just seems every one tries to out do the other person, and it’s really not beginner friendly I would have to go back a few years ago to watch easier ones, but you are so different and very refreshing to watch, and you are very beautiful.. I hope I’m making sense 🤦🏽‍♀️ I know I’m a slow learner but what you showed us was something I can totally do,thanks again 🙏🏽

  • Showerhead is easiest, quickest, and first thing I do. I need the extension for getting targeted spots as well as cleaning the shower. Did one better this move and added a water filter attachment as well. But I will be doing the shower lights, in fact they are supposed to change all bulbs cause I live in a cave unfortunately and this soft white isn’t good when you wear glasses.

  • I’m on my hubby’s page but I had to tell you the straight up, no goofy music and no big circus act to put your info out made Me delete some of the other people I watch. Calm, cool, collected and informative … not to mention fabulous for real budget friendly diy’erz 😉 Keep bringing your fab gab ! We’re watchin! We are also building our house( living in it while building from the foundation up)its not so bad when your man is an amazing worker 😀. Anyway, thanks again for your imagination and professionalism. Rock on 🤘

  • Thankful for all the hacks!! But, I have a issue with my apartment carpet. I have lived here for seven years and had the carpet cleaned numerous of times. The carpet was here 10 years before, I moved in and come to her discover and landlords will not replace it. What would you suggest? Thank you in advance…HELP

  • Gurl😭😭 you saving lives today!! Well….everyday ❤ I’m going to move out soon to my FIRST APARTMENT and no…its no mansion but im grateful anyways 🙏 but you articles of spicing things up got me so pumped up to soon be moving and investing to my home. ❤ please don’t stop giving us tips and tricks as I hope to soon put them to practice 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 new sub and love you ❤

  • Hello… I absolutely love your content you’re incredibly talented and enjoyable to watch. Can you recommend how to hide a return vent (it needs 4″ clearance of putting anything over it. I have a large glass vase with curly branches in it, raised on books for more height, it covers it but, you can still see the vent peeking through. TY 🥰🦋

  • Wow, I just came across your tips and I have been converted. Check….I have subscribed. Your suggestions are so simple and cost effective. I will be trying out a few of these for sure. I have a few questions. Does the Ahem more than a Dollar Dollar Tree, “the works work on bathroom wall tile grout? Especially since my building was built in the 40’s. Will it work on caulking? I like the idea for the change out of the Faucets. Especially in the kitchen. Kudos to your website. I am hooked.

  • Heyyy!! Just found your website!! I’ve lived in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Richmond, VA. Anyways I always always change out the shower head bc I have become so accustomed to a hand held one. SOO MANY amazing tips and tricks that I can’t wait to try! Especially the extra bathroom mirror moment! I’m actually going to paint the rusty light fixture in my bathroom with some heavy duty outdoor rust off paint bc we don’t have a fan in our bathroom 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️. Do you have any tips and tricks for up-cycling kids bedroom furniture as they age?

  • I definitely have a request for a article/ general question; but it does take your time and energy and money and Landlord confirmations on what’s allowed but with that said I’m very interested to figure out how to mount a television but rental friendly. I like the idea of movable built-ins but I did have an idea of one of those four dimensional accent walls and then drill through the accents to hold the weight of the TV that way it’s not directly in the wall or some kind of built-in that can hold the TV but make it look like it is mounted on the wall….how would I make this possible particularly given the weight and the lack of anchor supports since it won’t be directly in the wall?🙃🤔 I love your stuff thank you so much for doing your articles especially because now I don’t have to do my own, I’ll just ask you questions 💜 💗 💕 🤌🏿👌🏾

  • Hello and thank you for this. You are so pretty, like really you are. I’m perusal the article and as I’m perusal I’m thinking to myself “SHE LOOKS LIKE SOMEBODY” It took me a minute to figure it out but I figured it out.
