Are prerunners 2WD or 4WD?
When building a prerunner, many people initially focus on choosing the right model truck, but they often overlook the importance of 2WD or 4WD options. While most prerunners are 2WD due to the necessity of race trucks, there are advantages to owning a 4WD prerunner. This article will discuss the pros and cons of each version, focusing on the 2004 Ford Ranger, Project Desert 4×4, and 2WD 1996 Explorer.
2WD prerunners are generally cheaper due to the absence of extended front axles and heavy front axle and transfer case, which can save hundreds or pounds in weight. Additionally, 2WD prerunners offer better suspension travel, as they are limited by the amount a CV joint can articulate in the front axle. Both prerunners have Dixon Bros Racing long travel kits, and the 4WD Ranger sits lower at ride height than the 2WD Explorer.

Do Tacoma prerunners have 4WD?
The couple chose a 2001 to 2004 vintage Tacoma base for their vehicle, which retains the mini truck size body. They considered a 4WD or 2WD Prerunner model, which share the same frame, rear axle, front suspension, and other components but lacks the transfer case and front driveline parts. They decided to use a front straight axle swap and found Prerunners more attractive due to their lower cost and better condition.
They purchased a clean 2001 SR5 X-tra Cab Prerunner with a 3. 4 liter V6 and auto tranny, which they plan to convert with aftermarket parts to accept a transfer case and install a driven axle under the front end.

Prerunners navigate tricky and dangerous courses, and skilled drivers scout the area before others to join the event. The J. D. Power Cars Newsletter provides more details on this topic.
📹 Comparing 2024 Tacoma SR5, Limited, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road!
Head-to-head 2024 Toyota Tacoma trim levels comparison. Who wins for you? This is a battle of 2024 Tacoma SR5, 2024 …
Joe always does the best and most complete reviews. I always wait for his to watch first because he gets more content in his articles. If I were to get a Tacoma this is the version I would want with a extended cab with bigger bed. Rear seats of a mid size are not a good place to be anyway and the bigger bed is what I need.
People are surprised about the price?! Have yall took the family out for dinner? Have you looked at the price for a house or rent on an apartment? Every one is saying how they bought the same truck for dirt cheap 6 six years ago. Well, this aint 6 years ago, and everything has gone up in price. Sometimes, if wonder if these people that comment get out of the house these days…
Turbo charged equates to more issues down the road. Naturally aspirated is antiquated but the last of the bullet proof motors. Furthermore, destination fee 1800 plus paper work about 2000 plus taxes about 4000 plus they always force you to pay for “dealership installed accessories” bs 1-2k about 49k for this. The base model sr is about 44k out the door. Saw another review. I’ll keep my 23 access cab v6 SR5 with SX package. More truck for less price.
This makes me appreciate my 2000 Toyota Tacoma V6 Prerunner of which I bought brand new nearly 24 years ago. It’s still my daily driver to this very day. It just hit 251K miles. Mine has a sliding back window as well as fold down rear seats. The sliding back window has been very helpful. Maybe the whole entire back window comes down electrically on these new models? Anyhow, I do think the rear disk breaks are a great addition. However, I’m not sold on these yet. I just can’t get on board with the 4 cylinder engine. If anything, i’ll get the hybrid Tacoma…hoping that has enough acceleration! Great camera work Lori and great review Joe! Cheers.
Mark my words – ALL turbos FAIL! So if you’re gonna buy one of these, start putting $50/mo. away so when yours DOES go out, you’ll have the $2000 to have it fixed. So glad I’ve got a 2021 3rd Gen 6-speed manual and a V6. I never worry about taking long road trips as my “turbo” will never go out… ‘cause…I… ain’t… got… one…
Wait, does the space cab not have a door?????. No WAY Toyota!!! That’s not nice. Toyota’s been doing weird stuff lately with all their new vehicles. I don’t think this is the case with their Hilux model from Japan. This is lazy engineering again from Toyota. The cab door is very useful for accessibility for people who use the truck as work truck. This is a truck after all. I am losing lots of confidence in Toyota with every new release and I am a loyal toyota guy for 30 years.
Joe – Curious how this compares in looks and quality to the 2024 Colorado Crew Cab 2wd LT @ $31,900 ? ——- This TRD Pre-Runner looks really nice but it seems to have a ton of hard plastic, what I do like is that they give you some extra room for it being a single cab. Glad that they did not try to make it a tiny extended cab like was done years ago where people in the back had to sit sideways on tiny little child seats.
Recently retired from auto service business. I had customers with 500k on their Toyota 6 cylinders, forget all the fanboy hype you will be replacing turbos from 80 to 120k and the engine might make 200k. Pickup trucks are usually the poorest maintain vehicles and I wouldn’t expect a compliant engine to last very long. Plus this thing is made in Mexico, so it will be assembled very poorly.
This is 38,100… for 1,200 more (39,300) you could get a Nissan pro-4x. Toyotas pricing on this one seems a bit wild. It’s beautiful, new, reliable most likely, but for a little more you can get a four wheel drive vehicle with four doors and a naturally aspirated engine. All I’m trying to say is.. people really gonna have to want this Tacoma to pay that wild price for them.
NO New vehicle is worth the price they are asking. New vehicles are garbage, cheap parts that don’t last long but yet the vehicles cost us more. Remember back when vehicles actually had warranty that covered the vehicle. Now they know that their garbage is not going to last so they don’t warranty as much or for as long
2:40 Cut the audio and add some hip hop music. New segment: “Raitis Raps.” Sorry just reminded me of a music article from the early 2000’s. Although a pick up truck is more country. Not sure where I’m going with. Good article as always! Probably going to end up with the new RAV4. You know, kids and stuff. But like looking at the trucks.
Like the truck like the article truck could use some more horsepower for that kinda for a sooner give it time after market product solved there will make it more or smart. I would turn it to an end to a rally truck. Yes, simple basic, not too many 1000 missiles. But good enough to beep for like a single person. Take it out on the weekends if you live in the desert. Or just an urban vehicle in the city again. I like the concept of a rally truck. Not too high, not too low. Maybe the stick. Are petals understood? Will different options. But love the truck. Yes, I do like the underground cover color. Color
‘Really obnoxious, continually shouting reviewer (/salesman). And it took “only” 18 minutes (after the initial, revved-up sales pitch) to get to the actual drive review – with more totally uncritical sales-pitching, driving on an unchallenging, smoothly-paved road obviously picked by Toyota to avoid negatively affecting the leaf-sprung rear suspension.
None of those price level are correct either! Every one of hem has 2-5 grand worth of add ons you cant take off. And all the add ons you want, arent available in certain areas…cough cough GULF STATE REGION… cough cough… cant get a moon roof or upgraded screen unless you get the premium package at 9 grand making it 51000, and then they add on step rails, dash cams, bed steps phone cords, and mess you dont want. 55 thousand for a TRD sport. Not one of those trucks you showed is MSRP base price.
saw a trd sport on sunday. My least favorite thing use to be that stupid handle they put next to the shifter but probably worse than that is the paint job on the bottom 6 inches of the truck has a textured look. I guess its more durable but It just looks like a mistake and looks bad. Hoping they fix that by 2025. JMO
