There is a great misconception here. A similar mistake was in the previous Volcanoes 101 article too. The heat from the outer core does NOT melt mantle rocks above it to produce magma as shown in the article, although it can be said that both radioactive decay in the core and the heat leftover from the Earth’s accretion are two major sources of heat that cause mantle to convect vigorously and drive plate tectonics, which eventually cause mantle rocks to undergo partial melting in some specific regions, not everywhere. Primary melts come directly from the partial melting (%5-30) of the upper mantle, which under normal conditions is solid and cannot produce magma because geotherm doesn’t intersect solidus. Based on observations of earthquake waves through Earth’s interior, it’s known that mantle is simply solid. However, it behaves plastically over geological time. In other words, it’s able to flow. Its viscosity is much higher than rhyolite lava. In short, there are three ways that melts could be produced from the mantle lherzolites. It’s either by adding volatiles to the mantle as in subduction zones, or by adiabatic decompression as in mid-ocean ridges, or by increasing the tempature so that geotherm can intersect solidus. Primary melts can undergo differentiation by a couple of processes such as fractional crystallization, magma mixing, assimilation of surrounding rocks etc. so you can find various types of magma and igneous rocks.
The description of how volcanoes form in this article requires a mantle and possibly outer core heat plume and applies only to a very few specific volcanic sites. One of them is in the Pacific, and is responsible for creating and maintaining the Hawaiian island chain. Another is under the Yellowstone region and is the source of the Yellowstone supervolcano. In nearly all other volcanoes what REALLY happens is that water-saturated crust material from under the ocean gets pushed down into the upper mantle as the tectonic plates shift. The water in this material lowers its melting point below the temperature of the mantle material surrounding it, so it melts as the mantle heats it. This material also expands as it heats and melts, creating pressure that slowly cracks its way through the mantle above it, helping it create, push through and widen fissures and reservoirs in the mantle and crust until it reaches the surface.

It did not reduce the volcano from 13k ft to a 3600 hole (which to a layman would interpret at base level)… That’s a difference of 17k ft! What is true is that it reduced a 14.1k ft volano to a 9.4k ft volcano which itself contains a crater which is goes a further 3.6k ft. That is a 8.3k feet difference. Don’t sensationalize.. just relay the facts please. They are impressive themselves without the lieing. Have some integrity.

Again… your diagrams are very misleading. You’ve basically said that all volcanoes are created similar to how those that form on hotspots are created. You’ve linked this to the Ring of Fire, which does has a high concentration of volcanoes, BUT are due to the various subduction zones surrounding the Pacific plate. With your sort of budget and audience, you really need to do better. This sadly isn’t an exception.
