Does outdoor travertine need to be sealed?

Sealing travertine is crucial for its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. Without a protective layer, travertine becomes vulnerable to moisture infiltration, leading to unsightly stains, etching, mold mildew, and structural deterioration. Sealing creates a shield on the stone’s surface, preventing the ingress of liquids, oils, and other harmful substances into its pores. Two main types of sealers are topical and penetrating, each offering a unique approach to preservation and aesthetic enhancement.

StrongSeal Wetlook Concentrate is a heavyweight sealer that provides a glossy finish and enriches travertine’s natural hues and patterns. CoverSeal Pen80 is a stealthy yet robust sealer that repels water and moisture, making it an ideal choice for outdoor travertine protection. CoverSeal AC250 Matte WB Acrylic Sealer offers a natural aesthetic while defending against water damage, oil stains, and color degradation.

How long does travertine last outdoors?

Tumbled Travertine Pavers are a superior material for pool decks, patios, driveways, and walkways due to their porous surface that absorbs water, making the surface non-slip and cool to the touch. They last centuries compared to other manmade materials like brick pavers or concrete. Travertine Pavers are sourced from Turkey, Italy, Iran, Mexico, Peru, and the United States, and are the preferred choice for architects and designers. The industry standard for Travertine Pavers is 1. 25″ thick, but custom orders can be made for thicker pavers.

What happens if travertine gets wet?

Travertine, a calcium precipitate from mineral-laden water sources, is commonly used in showers and is not harmful in itself. However, the installation and materials used can cause potential issues. If the stone is bonded to a wood subfloor, it may warp and stress the stone assembly. If bonded to a mortar bed or concrete substrate, it should not harm the stone. If the stone was not installed per industry standards and there are no movement joints within the flooring, it could cause stress if it expands from water exposure. If no damage is seen, it is unlikely to cause problems later.

Does travertine get hot outside?

Travertine, a porous limestone, is 20-30 cooler than pavers due to its ability to absorb water quickly and expel heat, making it a better choice for patio construction or renovation. Travertine, formed from the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate around mineral springs, is cooler to touch and less resistant to heat. Its porous nature allows it to pass heat down to the earth beneath it, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like fire pits, driveways, walkways, and patios.

How to seal travertine outside?

Travertine tiles or pavers should be sealed using dip sealing, with at least two coats of surface sealing. This process involves spreading sealant on the surface, creating a thin layer with a mop, and letting it dry before repeating the process for the second coat. If left unsealed, the porosity of the stone can cause it to etch, causing the stone to lose its beauty. To prepare the stone for sealing, clean it thoroughly with a soft bristled broom or cloth, and if stains are present, use a PH neutral solution mixed with water. Allow the stone to dry before applying the sealer.

They can be installed on porches, roofs, or around pools in full sun, ensuring their durability over time. Travertine tiles offer a natural vein look comparable to marble and granite but at a lower cost. What is the disadvantage of travertine?

Travertine is a versatile stone that can be used for countertops and backsplashes, but it requires some maintenance due to its high porousness and ability to absorb liquids. It can cause permanent staining if spilled, and sealant can improve its stain resistance but requires regular reapplying. The best way to keep the stone stain-free is to wipe up spills promptly. Travertine reacts to acidic substances, putting it at risk for etching, which can be difficult to remove from matte finishes.

Compared to porcelain or other stones, travertine is generally softer, strong, and less likely to break, making it easier to cut and install. It can also be shaped to fit small or oddly shaped spaces, achieving a seamless finish in showers and tubs.

  • Has any one ever installed 3cm thick travertine pavers on their interior stairs steps? I think the look would be awesome. I am just not sure if I have to reinforced the stair framing in order to handle the extra weight? For the risers, I plan on using matching travertine tiles. The total weight of all the material, not including thin set or grout, is just over 800lbs. But that will be distributed over entire stair case.
