Dry eye is a common eye condition that occurs when the conjunctiva, the moist tissue layer covering the inner eyelids and white part of the eye, loosens, wrinkles, and folds. This can cause symptoms such as dry eye, eye discomfort, and blurry vision. Dry eyes can be caused by various factors, including aging, menopause, thyroid disorders, certain medications, poor ocular hygiene, and environmental factors.
Dry eyes can be diagnosed by examining the signs and symptoms of dry eyes, which may include itching, soreness, grittyness, redness, blurryness, sensitivity to light, and more watery than normal. ThermiEyes is an innovative, non-surgical treatment that can improve dry eyes and reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.
Dry eyes are another highly common symptom among patients with conjunctivochalasis, as the condition causes tear circulation impairment, leading to dry patches of skin around the eyes or under the eyes. Dry eyes can occur when tear production and drainage are not in balance, either due to insufficient tear production or poor tear quality.
A wrinkled retina, also known as a macular pucker, is when fine wrinkles appear on the surface of the retina in the macula area. Dry eyes can become chronic and lead to blurred vision or even vision loss if left untreated. Early detection and treatment are crucial for managing and relieving symptoms of dry eyes.
In summary, dry eye is a common eye condition that affects the layers of tears that cover the cornea, causing symptoms such as dry eyes, eye discomfort, and blurry vision. Diagnosis and treatment options vary, but the right treatment can help manage and relieve symptoms.

Dry Eyes can be the main cause to blurry vision, even if you don’t feel like you have dry eyes. Here are 3 reasons why, and also 3 …
Can dry eyes affect eyelids?
Dry eye syndrome is a multifactorial disease characterized by a reduction in the quality or quantity of tears, causing irritation, tired eyes, burning, stinging sensations, and vision fluctuation. Treatment options include eye drops, gels or ointments, lid hygiene, or warm compresses. For severe cases, oral medications, surgical or non-surgical procedures may be necessary. Dry eye syndrome is a multifactorial disease characterized by a reduction in the quality or quantity of tears, and symptoms include irritation, tired eyes, burning, stinging sensations, and vision disturbance.
Why do I suddenly have wrinkles under my eyes?
Under eye wrinkles are physical signs of aging skin, resulting from thinner and losing elasticity around the eyes. These wrinkles can be accelerated by factors like sun exposure, smoking, facial movements, and genetics. There are two types: dynamic and static lines. Dynamic lines are caused by muscle movement, while static lines are present when muscles are not contracted. The primary cause of under eye wrinkles is depleted collagen levels in the dermis layer, which are essential for maintaining facial structure and youthfulness.
A diminished collagen quantity can cause the skin around the eyes to depress, creating lines and wrinkles that become more visible over time. Other symptoms include fine or deep creases, crinkling around the tear duct, sagging skin, crow’s feet, sunken eyes, increased darkness, and puffiness.
Can dry eyes affect skin around eyes?
Dry eye is a common skin condition characterized by rosacea, blepharitis, and pruritus on the eyelids or near the eye. These conditions can hinder tear production and prevent the formation of an oily film on the eye’s surface. Rosacea, a common skin disease causing rosy patches and dry spots, and ocular rosacea, a related condition, can also cause dry eye. These conditions are linked to autoimmune disorders, where the body’s immune system attacks various parts of the body. Ocular rosacea may also be linked to mites on eyelashes or bacteria on eyelids.
What can be mistaken for dry eyes?
Ocular surface disease (OSD) is a common condition affecting up to 78 percent of all adults. It is caused by damage to the cornea, the front surface of the eyes, and can cause vision issues and quality of life. Other common types include eye allergies, blepharitis, decreased tear quality with age, chemical or thermal burns, side effects of medical treatments, keratitis, and Sjorgen’s disease. OSD is a broader term that includes dry eye syndrome and other eye disorders.
Can wrinkles under eyes go away?
Regular skin care can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eye and mouth. To achieve healthy-looking, supple skin, cleanse your face twice a day, both morning and evening, using a micellar water like Olay Cleanse Hungarian Water Essence Micellar Water. During the day, use a moisturiser with SPF 30 to provide moisture and protect your skin from sun damage. This two-in-one solution provides instant absorption and a lightweight feel, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with a light-as-air, matte finish. Remember, you cannot reverse the aging process, but a regular skincare routine can help.
How to get rid of dry skin around eyes?
Dry eyelids can be treated by using a humidifier to add moisture to the air, taking shorter showers or baths with warm water, applying moisturizer multiple times a day, especially after bathing, and using gentle soaps and detergents instead of harsh ones. The delicate skin around the eyes is more sensitive and prone to irritation due to factors like aging and environmental allergens. As the skin loses moisture and fat, it becomes more fragile and more likely to flake and be irritated. To prevent further irritation, use gentle soaps and detergents instead of harsh ones.
What are the symptoms of severe dry eyes?
Dry eye symptoms include dry, burning, redness, watery or teary eyes, and mucus that makes the eyes feel “glued shut” after sleeping. Itching and light sensitivity may also occur. Diagnosis is often based on symptoms, but ophthalmologists use tests like tear production measurements, special dyes, and tear film evaluation to rule out other potential problems. Treatment at Penn focuses on wetting the eye, reducing inflammation, improving the work/home environment, and evaluating overall health, medications, and diet. If left untreated, dry eye can damage tissue and scar the cornea.
Does eye wrinkles go away?
Eye wrinkles are a natural part of aging and can be treated with topical creams and cosmetic treatments like retinoids, Botox, and resurfacing procedures. However, there is no single “right” answer to smoothing the appearance of eye wrinkles. The best course of action depends on your skin goals and the type of wrinkles you want to achieve. There are two main types of eye wrinkles: static and dynamic. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle contractions, such as laughing, smiling, and frowning, and can result from various factors such as laughing, smiling, and frowning.
How did I cured my dry eyes permanently?
Dry eye syndrome is a chronic condition that cannot be permanently cured. However, your eye doctor may suggest various treatments to alleviate symptoms. These may include contact lenses, prescription eye drops, or nasal sprays to stimulate tear production. If you wear contact lenses, your doctor may recommend a new brand or specialty lens and a different wear schedule. Prescription eye drops or nasal sprays can also be used to reduce inflammation and stimulate tear production.
Why is my skin suddenly wrinkling?
Wrinkles are horizontal lines on the forehead, resulting from repeated facial expressions and the natural aging process. Other common types include worry lines, bunny lines, Marionette lines, and Nasolabial folds. Neck wrinkles, also known as necklace lines, can develop due to the natural aging process, loss of collagen and elastin, and repeated neck bending. Chest wrinkles, also known as cleavage rhytides or sleep creases, appear on the upper chest between the neck and upper abdomen due to the natural aging process, loss of collagen and elastin, sun exposure, and repeated folding of the skin. Other contributing factors include genetics, smoking, medications, and weight gain or loss.
Hand wrinkles can appear due to the natural aging process, loss of collagen and elastin, sun exposure, and repeated folding of the skin. As you age, your hands lose fat and elasticity, making them more translucent and prone to wrinkling. Forearm wrinkles can be caused by genetics, weight loss, and sun damage.
Contributing factors include aging skin becoming less elastic, thinner, and more fragile, decreased production of natural oils, UV light from the sun speeding up the natural aging process, repeated facial expressions, smoking, environmental factors, genes, and gravity’s constant downward pull on the skin. These factors contribute to the formation of wrinkles and folds, making it essential to address and prevent these issues.

This is best article on dryness. You literally solved my concern and doubts on my doctor. I have get checked up by 5 doctor each and everyone gave a different prescription and number for my lens and last the conclusion was my original number was correct and I have dryness which can only be corrected by artificial tears. I had all these problems listed below 1. Pain in my right eye only when I wear specs. Without specs its fine 2. Right eye feels like a stone in my eyesocket 3. Pain in eyebrows, below eye, nerve and forehead at right side, when I have the specs. 4. Vision gets blurred after continuous working on the laptop. That’s why I follow 202020. 5. Little overlapping characters not much but worsen with continuous work. 6. For dryness I have eyedrops 4 times a day which only delays the pain for a while. 7. I feel sleepy and heavy eyes on my mac all the time and I have to sleep to recover, which I cannot afford 8. Sometimes I cannot see the fonts clearly the same font and sometimes I can. ( Dont remember when) I think after continuously working and not having eyedrops in the last 2 hours What can be the reason and solution for this.
Just found your website and greatly appreciate your help! I have chronic Uveitis and have very bad dry eyes, I just started using Walgreens own brand of drops after reading a review of the best drops to use, they have no preservatives in them and so far they do a good job. I look forward to perusal more of your website!
I’ve had dry eyes for the last 6/7 years…The best remedy I’ve used it Organic Castor oil…Just using a tiny drop on the fingertip and swiping it across your eyeline like a eye pencil every night for two weeks in the beginning…Your eyes will become alittle blurry, red n gritty for the first two weeks…In the morning you may wake up with crusty eyes, this is all very normal as the Castor oil cleanses your eyes…After two weeks you use it once a week, over time maybe once a month…Your eyes will be clear n sharp, no more weeping eyes or feeling of grit…Castor oil will also safeguard your eyes against Cataracts and Glaucoma…I carry onto to use it every couple of months to maintain the moisture and clear vision…
For the last few years(especially around 2020) my eyes have been getting dry and irritated. my eyes were never perfect I never had trouble seeing at night or the double vision you talked about. But I can even feel the dryness and irritation but when my eyes are properly lubricated I have vision like an eagle with amazing detail. I would myself contribute most of my dry eyes issue from lack of exercise/activity, my diet not being the best the last few years, and the irritants of my current home, aka environment. Even when I went to an eye doctor the head lady there couldn’t have cared less about what I was saying to her about my dry and irritated eyes that this is a new problem. All she cared about was getting me a pair of new glasses $$$ for which I only ever needed them for the classroom sometimes. She was even nasty to say she would tell authorities or so that I needed glasses while driving, basically threatening me which after I got done with what I needed there I will never return. But from this article I feel this is exactly what I have, true dry eyes because of diet, lack of exercise, and environment and these solutions and reasons make perfect sense.
Wow I never thought of that. Whenever I read for like 20+ mins on my phone my vision starts getting blurry recently. Tried so many things even bought those anti blue light glasses and nothing worked. I tried some eye drops and it helped instantly def gunna be using these more often. My eyes never felt dry so it never crossed my mind. Thank you!
I also have lupus SLE and sjogrens which causes dry eyes. My eyesight is fine except for the dry eyes. My optometrist used a steamer on my eyes followed by squeezing to clear the lower lid oil glands which were blocked. Once this was done, my eyes went from very blurry to clear vision. Very informative article. Thank you.
Since I was a child I had a 1/4″ grey spot on the white of my left eye which my eye doctor told me was a birth mark. When I was 60 I started to close my eyes in the shower and let the water spray on my eyelids, (eyes closed), turning my head side to side, 20x to improve eye circulation. Within two weeks the mark was completely gone. When I told my present doctor what I did he said it was impossible. I also asked him what the effects were of preservatives on living cells, or if cataracts were a kind of callus the eye makes from dry eyelids rubbing on the surface membrane of the eye and he didn’t know. I have always had dry eyes and could never wear contacts. Now I think it’s from clogging my tear ducts with the black eye pencil we used to line our inner eyelids with.
I recently had my eyes examined 2 months ago, at vision works. I wear my glasses most of the time, but I notice recently that I’ve been scunching my eyes real tight and and opening up to make tears. the lighting in our home is not good. I have a hard time looking at things even with my glasses 👓 on .
I have suffered with extreme dry eyes for almost my entire life. As a teen, I would poke them or blow on them to make them tear up but with little relief. Then one day I realised that if I yawn, my eyes produced tears. These days I yawn like every few minutes through out the entire day, everyday for the tears. I never use eye drops because the relief is short lived. I have also experienced extremely blurred vision for months and became scared that I was going blind but didn’t know why. Now I understand that it’s down to the same dry eyes that have plagued me for my entire life 🙁
So many times I’ll tell patients that their meibomian glands are dropping out and going away and they probably have a certain level of evaporative dry eye disease and they respond by saying “but my eyes aren’t dry”. At the same time they are blinking about once every 2-3 seconds so their automatic blinks are accommodating for their evaporative dry eyes and they don’t even know it. The next discussion is exactly what you talked about when you brought up “Tear Break Up Time” or TBUT. Good info!!!
Thank you so much, Doctor. You nailed my problem. Now comes the question as to how to bring it up with the eye doctor without offending them. (I know doctors don’t like patients doing their own research on line. But, this was such a relief to watch.) Hope they can help me. I have been losing vision in one eye for two years due to dryness. But, I am on Medi-Cal, which I am greatful for, that takes a great deal of self-advocacy and perserverance. The referral to an optomologist came from a doc who thinks it’s a cataract. This may be a challenge to overcome. The eye not tearing up as well as the other, seems to be the underlying problem. Thank you, again.
I’ve had it for a few years now. In the day I’m not too bad. In the night it will wake me. I have to open my eyes and blink for a few minutes. Obviously not good for my sleep. I sometimes use preservative drops. I also upped y omega 3 and also got a humidifier in my bedroom that I put on for an hour when I go to bed.
Okay I have a question. I have dry eye because I have thyroid issues. And I take a natural desiccated thyroid pills for this. Whether it’s helping or not I don’t know. But then I started having dry eye issues. And I used to wear glasses but when I would drive I would have to keep my left eye closed I didn’t know why this was happening. I went to an eye doctor and he didn’t really give me any answers. So I begin to research watch articles similar to yours and go on dry I platforms of which I didn’t really gain that much information. I went to a so-called dry eye specialist who did a test and said you have dry eyes. And all they said was keep using the eye drops similar to what you showed. Well all of this is truly unhelpful and I’ve worn contacts my whole life but stopped because I couldn’t afford them. But I am 62 years old and I wear contacts. And on this one platform the people all freaked out because I have dry eye and I wear contact lenses. Well I have to because I can’t walk around with one eye open and the other eye close unless I have a contact lens on. Which is the really bad left eye. And but still these people freaked out because they thought it was weird that I was doing that and they said I’m drying my eyes out more. Well I have to be able to see for starters and there’s no one to drive me around and I’m still good at driving so I have to do this but what about when I get to be 70 or 80 am I still going to wear this contact lens I don’t want to walk around like a freak with one eye closed all the time.
I have had a sinus infection along with blurry vision. My Dr. prescribed Flonase. I noticed after using a few times for my sinus infection, my vision also felt clearer. Maybe this will help someone with allergies like myself, that maybe there is a connection between sinus infections and blurry vision and should talk to your doctor. I can’t take regular antihistimines because they can dry out your eyes, but Flonase is a different type that according to my Dr. contains steroids. Make sure to see your Dr. regarding this, but I am the type of person that likes to know the why of things and we all wouild like to be informed about our own health and not have to suffer.
I have extremely dry eyes, as well as two autoimmune diseases that affect one of my eyes. I am curious regarding what you think of autologous eye drops. Also, I need to have cataract surgery and am feeling very nervous about it because I don’t want to do anything to make my eyes worse in terms of dryness. Thanks.
I want to ask you something how powerful is scleral lens I have that problem yup blurry vision you talking about scleral lens was good for dry eyes only thing I can really see out of is gas lens and what prescription scleral lens go up to my gas lens is power trying see if scleral lens go that far as power
Hi DR.. i have been fighting with this from 5 years plus. Especially driving. I cant drive without sunglasses, i get little dizzy, pressure around my eyes. It comes and goes. Especially when i am looking at talking to someone i cant focus on them and talk. I keep blinking, my eye sight is perfect, finally one doctor told me i have dry eyes inflammation, she gave me ointment it helped little bit but after didnt. Yea vision gets clear and blurry. Help out if you can
I’ve had an issue with dry eyes and discharge for a year or two now. Usually it goes away on its own but the past two weeks or so I have been absolutely miserable and in torture! I have to rinse my eyes out constantly because it feels like I’ve got a hair in them. Sometimes I’ll get long stringy bits of goo coming out. Today I saw the eye doc and all she can tell me is I have severely dry eyes
I was drilling concrete overhead as an electrical apprentice for nearly a a year only using safety glasses. I have had sevier dry eye problems since. Me eye specialist prescribed RESTASIS. I used this for 6 months and couldn’t handle it any longer (it felt like I was putting gasoline in my eyes and was burning for at least an hour each time). I no longer use restasis on my own terms and cost. And now only use the over the counter tears drop appointments and gel drops occasionally are uncomfortable. I’m up at least 8 times each night putting drops in because of serious dryness. I’m not sure what I can do as I feel like my eye doctor just wants me to use these expensive terribly uncomfortable drops. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Maybe another eye doctor for a second opinion? I’m only 37 years of age. And it seems like work place safety is always last. Thank you for your time !
Can I ask a question I have blurry vision only on my left eye and can only see close up but my right eye can see far away but I have scaring from having cold sore virus .. Herpes simplex .. in my left eye but I’ve been told noting can be done . Still in my 30 kind of annoying . My right eye composites but when it gets tired I can struggle . Still very good sight in my right though 20 20 vision and I did have that on my left till the virus came during Covid and couldn’t get the treatment so sacred my eye is there anything I can do to help. Oh also have ghosting double vision. They gave me eye drops but do nothing
I’ve had several opthamoligist state that I have very dry eyes, Blepheritis and Rosacea but they say to use artificial tears and a warm compress. Baby Shampoo on eyelids I also try to use moisture goggles at night. I tend to take them off while sleeping. I wish that the Mega 3 artificial tears are expensive. Also, use a PM ointment and Muro ointment on the eye with Fuchs.
Is it possible to overuse moisture-replenishing eye drops? What would be the downsides if any? Will they be of any help to reduce light halos when driving at night? Can you discuss glaucoma and why damage could be more central vision than peripheral vision? Is there any promising study or trials on treating or reversing glaucoma damage? Why can you lower IOP with drops but there are no drops to raise IOP? Just a few suggestions for future articles I would be interested in. Thanks!
Hi, I’m from Australia. My Optometrist 6 months ago recommended a product that is available in Australia. It’s brand name is Nova Tears and it’s their +Omega-3 Eye Drops. Antimicrobial Preservative Free. I had to apply those drops diligently 4 times a day. And in a little as 3 days I started noticing a difference. I try to use those drops twice a day now and at other times of the day using Nova Tears Preservative Free Lubricating Eye Drops. ( I’ll admit I’m not always successful at using eye drops 4 times a day presently but I try to at least use drops 3 t times a day). I do have a question. How many times a day can a person use Eye Drops? And how many times a day is overkill in using Eye Drops?….. ⚛️☮️ 👀 🌏
I wake up in morning with this and everything is blurred like I can’t see my left eye is much worse thn my right eye I have to blink and blink and wipe my eyes until I can see clearly again the way you explained it with the glass was spot on that is exactly how my eye is when I wake up I hate this and my anxiety is so bad 😢
Hi doctor, I had femto-lasic on my eyes 5 months ago. Before that both my eyes had astigmatism and after surgery one of them still is 1 diopter astigmatic. I’ve been having double and blurry vision since the first day after surgery but that improved after applying artificial tears and Liposic gel for the last two months. Now I have no vision problem when I wake up until around lunch but my vision gets worse after a couple of hours of working with the computer. I can not focus on reading texts, especially on dark backgrounds. I am so depressed that I quit my job because of that and not being able to programming and coding for more than around two hours. Could it be dry eyes or because of femto-lasic surgery? Thanks
I’ve found out what is causing my terrible dry eyes. I read somewhere that air conditioning can dry out your eyes, so one day when the days in North Carolina were not getting quite as hot as usual I turned off the air conditioning and opened a window behind my computer. After a while my eyes stopped feeling dry and the blurring that comes with terribly-dry eyes went away. I was OK but then we had a very hot day and I had to turn on the AC and my dry-eye problem came back. It’s August now and I look forward to the days getting cool enough to leave the windows open.
Thank you so much for the information..blurry/hazy vision was for sure the top reason why I seeker help to figure out what was wrong with my eyes. I suffer from dry eye and the major cause is MGD. I have a couple of questions: 1. Should warm compresses be done daily forever or for a period of months at a time 2. If you get an in office treatment done like IPL or Lipiflow should you still continue doing warm compresses at home?

Hey doctor. I am getting some burning in my right eye and feeling that something stuck in it in most of times. Do not have other symptoms such as redness or discharges. One optometrists said its dryness and gave my Hylo gel drops with Systain Omega 3 tablets. Seen another Optometrist cause my symptoms didn’t go away and said I have SPK and gave me Steroids drops and not looking to take ilthe risk of Steroids since I am not sure if he’s diagnosis was correct and worth it to take Steroids . Burning comes and go but irritation and feeling something stuck in my eyes is the most symptom. When I wash it in warm water symptoms disappear for couple hours. Any suggestions ? 🙁
I’ve got some dry eyes going on, have recently bumped up my intake of omega 3 through .75 can of sardines or other in a day, it’s seemed to have made a difference. 60. My eye doc said some macular degeneration is going on are there suppliments or diet changes I could make that would help, the doc said there;”s nothing I could change to help. Much of the time I think they’ve been taught only one way and don’t look enough at the foods we eat for cure or to slow down what goes on in a body what’s your take on that?
Thank you for educating us and explaining this I went to sleep with a face mask on and I woke up to blurry vision. I have to say I never wore glasses in my life and I’ve never had this issue this severe it’s hard for me to see things that I wouldn’t normally see easily so this article is helping me get my vision back and I don’t recommend anybody wear a blindfold to sleep because this is literally never happened to me before until I wore a blindfold to sleep. Aka sleep mask
I have found that it seems it’s from within your body.. I have found now Tgod, I take a dessert spoonful of flaxseed oil in my cereal, also 2 cod liver oil capsules each day, and after about 2 wks my eyes are now so comfortable. I also found Blephaclean eye wipes are brilliant, keeps the eye lashes clean..
I’m not sure what was the cause, and I’m not sure what it is, but something happened to me today but I haven’t feel well for the last couple of days now sore throat headache and runny nose, and I haven’t eaten much over the past couple of days or drinking enough water and I was out in the hot sun doing some labour day work and I felt really week and I saw where everything was gray I couldn’t see anyone everyone looked like a black figure, I stopped and set and then continued again working and shortly after I saw black and then green, I had to stopped completely

I had allergen symptoms like red eyes, itching, watery eyes, swollen eyes, blurry vision etc…. But now after 2 days all symptoms have been almost gone . After my Cataract surgery 2 years ago, I have experienced constant blurriness in my left eye. It was diagnosed as Glare or Dry Eye Syndrome? I have to wear dark over sunglasses when ever I am outside and even in the home at times. I have tried many over the counter drops of all types and relief is only for a minute or two. It feels like a layer of vaseline spread over a lens and trying to look through it. Please help me.
I have chronic dry eyes and have tried everything including ipl. This doctor is right in all he has suggested. Dry eyes procedures such as il and lipiflow are not covered in Ontario Canada and each time we have to pay for these treatments. My dry eyes are so bad it impacts all visual aspects of my life. I’m not sure why it’s not a recognized disability or disease.
I’ve found besides eyelid cleaning a single drop of Argan oil massaged along the eyelashes and eyelids usually helps my dry eye. I use a high grade argan oil I buy from my natural health food market. They carry a lot of health care products. I originally bought the argan for dry scalp and thought to try it when my doctor mentioned in passing the surface of the eye usually has tiny amounts of moisturizing oil on its surface. I thought to try argan and it helps me. I originally developed dry eye when using high amounts of magnesium for muscle cramping. I noticed tiny amounts of powdered residues along my eyelid edges, from my tear ducts. Washing and rinsing helped, but the oil usually lasts the whole day when I need it. Any extra oil residue I just wipe away with a clean tissue.
Thank you for the article. I have severe dry eyes and am allergic to preservatives. Tried every product I could find without preservatives. The saving grace was cleaning my eyelids twice a day with Ivisia eyelid cleanser. During the day, I use Refresh eye drops with Celluvisc. At night I use Genteal tears severe gel . The combination of those three meds are so effective. Omega 3, too.
Dr my both the eyes have a scar behind the lence i can’t able to see the object drictly i can only see on the side and when I see the television from a distance it’s pictures are seen Black and white if I am closer to the television the colour are not so bright when is side the colour and picture is clear. The Dr recommended Zivifresh eye drop and their is no improvement i have this EYE problem for the past 20 years and this colour problem started from 4 months so please give me some suggestions Dr.
I had an infection in my eye and i check the general doctor and he gave me antibiotics eye drop and i use that one but my infection gone but now i see blurry with my left eye not clearly then i go to experienced eye specialist doctor and told him everything and then he said no problem you had (conjunctivitis) and now your cornea has something but no problem he said now he gave me two eye drops one is isotears and second one is Adelone for one month use.
I have something going on that seems like dry eye or eye strain or ‘mild’ conjunctivitis although when it first showed up I thought it was way more serious. I was trying everything, and blaming everything from the weather to the screen on my new computer. Finally, I started doing the easiest thing. Every time I visit the bathroom, I splash water on my face. Not a soapy wash, just water. It helps with the flakey skin I was having around the bridge of my nose and the dry eyes are already much better. The somewhat scarey “I am going blind!” splotches are almost gone. Enjoyed your advice and I did warm compresses once to relieve a clogged tear duct. So I know the advice is good. Just thought I’d mention this simple possibility.
Thank you for going through the causes for the blurry Vision. I have glaucoma in both eyes and have also had laser surgery to lower the pressure in my eyes prior to receiving a bleb in the left eye and a Baerverldt implant in the right eye. My last visit with my Ophthalmologist was in December 2023 when I was told that I had very dry eyes in the right eye. Lately I have had the foggy/haze in the right eye and very sensitive to light in the right eye only and I take the Refresh Gel and Refresh Plus and also my glaucoma eye drop Zioptan, but the Refresh Plus or Gel helps but the foggy/haze remains only clears up at night. Have to wear dark shades with wrap arounds to keep the sunlight out. I’m schedule to see my Ophthalmologist on the 19th. Still I want to thank you for your information I will be tuning into learn more from you.
Several years ago I went to my eye doctor because I thought I had a foreign body in my eyes. He examined me and told me that the problem was dry eyes. Since then I’ve tried a variety of eye drops but none have been very successful. I then tried applying a small amount of Vaseline and this works very well. I keep a bottle of Vaseline only for this and wash my hands before applying it to prevent infection.
I was diagnosed with dry eyes by my doctor and eye specialist and they both said I was producing too much oil which was causing the crustiness and the dryness. My main problem was driving at night the traffic lights, street lights, and on coming traffic lights were about 5x larger from a distance causing a real glare making me feel disorientated but when I got closer everything looked normal. Has anyone else experienced this or is it just me? ₩₩₩₩₩00&

Thank you for finally giving me confirmation that I am sane and that this there something wrong with my eyes, in which multiple eye doctors failed to diagnose much less explain. This has gone back many years with first problems with my eyes. After a long course of going to different eye doctors one told me after his exam that I had Auto Immune in my eyes, have a good day and pay at the desk. A few years ago I was also diagnosed with cataracts & had both eyes done to correct it, but then I was still have all the same symptoms just as you described it, blurry intermitted blurriness, severe light sensitivity, itchy and on and on it goes. Interestingly enough as well showers are extremely painful when washing my hair and water hitting my face, after I get done I look a vampire with bloodshot eyes for an hour or so afterwards. I can’t begin to tell you how relieved I am to at least know what is wrong and how to treat it!
I do watch a couple articles when I go to bed ( but often can’t fall asleep) so I watch a article or 2. Is that what is making my eye (left) blurry and then I often get a migraine in my brow bone area and then it moves up to front top of head. The other night it lasted 24 hours almost causing a lot of pain. I use refresh a lot. I do have an eye apt in 2 was. Cause I’m concerned as I am 77 and my lenses are 1 1/2 hrs old . And this is all going on only 3 hrs almost, since I had new lens put in with LASIK surgery and I had to have my left eye, which has a stigmatism done over a second time. And I thought I’d never be wearing glasses again. That was a real joke I wear bifocals still.
Doc, csn you explain why my eye sight drastically worsens when in flouredcent lit rooms. I can watch tv clearly during the day but the picture is fuzzy at night and I have to wear glasses. I’ m almost word blind at airport terminals. Never had explantion from opticians. I do have glaucoma and take drops .
I’ve been having floaters and double vision for the past month I’ve been to four different eye doctors they all said my eyes are fine. I’ve been battling a chronic sinus infection for the past four months. If there’s no actual damage to my eyes why would I have floaters? Please help they are very frustrating they are in strings and cover my whole vision
Dr Neil. I have an important had myopia due to reading and genetics gone to _3.50 and 4.5o from 0.25/0.75 from 11 years to 53 but during lockdown I had terrible tooth abscess and used mobile last 3 years everyday and mom was kidnapped and killed. Last eye Dr told me my eyesight is -18. I only see 20 percent and got cataract operations ASAP. Other one was -8. And had grade 2 hypertension oedema but reversible. Due to stress I had last year I ended up this and I put on weight so borderline diabetic. But my blood pressure was not high was 100/60 in London last 10 years but when I came home it is 160/180/140-100 last 6 months. Mom was Diabetic had cataract op and gone blind but she was 75. Social services kidnapped her for her pensions and killed eventually in 3.5 months. I m 55 and no children utterly worried to go blind. What do you think it is the problem. Tooth abscess or mobile phone. It goes so blurred all of a sudden but rarely is clear. Is there any way to get this sight back. Why it gone so bad in 2 years.many thanks in advance. I don’t like operations I get serious complications and never seen anyone gone bond After cataracts even grandpa had 30years ago he was So good. Many Thanks
Thanks for the info. I’ve had haze and blurriness in my left eye over the past few weeks and I think it might be allergies or sweating because I’ve been running outside and sweating a lot because it’s very hot and humid and it’s been getting in my eyes and burning. Cooler weather is coming up so hopefully it will go away.
For years now I have suffered from a yellowish discharge that accumulates around my eye lids and eye lashes, which becomes hard, and is difficult to remove. I’ve had it for years, but recently, I have noticed blurred vision in my left eye, which always feels like I have grit in it. Can you tell me what the cause is?
Ι got herpes last summer on the right side of my face and it was awefull the Area around the Eye and the nerves are affected and even now my vision is not well on that eye i have used many tear supplements because the Tear Glands do not work as they should, also the Eye gets irritated and red a lot of times,i went to doctor many times last year and sometimes i use anti iflamation drops then it gets better but after a few weeks it gets the same again.Any advice on what would help ? will it get better with time ?
So I’ve had dry eye for many years. My routine is electric dry eye mask for 15 to 30 minutes. I’ve used many brands. The best I’ve found is a newer one called IVIZIA. I use 2 drops each eye morning & evening. It comes in a preservative free bottle. It takes some getting use to squeeze out a drop. Shake well, turn upside down for 20 seconds. Say away from heat sources, wear good sunglasses that block wind & sunlight. I also use Retaine MGD if I’m traveling & need a quick treatment. The cleansers work if you have a lot of bacteria & a slight message. Thanks for the article!
Hello. Please allow me to pass my latest experience. I have been suffering from a terrible dry eyes, my eyes even feel burning. After cheking google, i leaened it was allergy. I started with one 24 hours allergy pill, and therult was positive. I felt amazing from the first ten minutes, and felt great from the next 24 hours. Now, i am having every day, ore every two days this pill. No.more problems of dry eys. I also immediately find out that mayonnaise and milk was partially causing my allergy and probably, I’ll find some other products as well. I also found out that cold smoothies attack my eyes. Hope this will be if some help. Thank you.
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 I’ve been on Dipixent /Dupilumab injections for very severe eczema for nearly 3 years now. It’s a miracle for the eczema, but my eyes have been so dry and irritated lately. apparently these injections can cause eye issues They just keep recommend drops drops and more drops but the optometrist said that they evaporate as soon as I put them in! So now Thank you so much for your valued information.🙏 my eyes have recently become very blurry and I’ve had to wear permanent glasses. I’m hoping it’s not to do with the injections.🤦♀️
I have problem focusing my eyes. I have a hole in my right eye and also I have refractive error. I see perfectly fine with my glasses but I can’t seem to focus my eyes on images especially when I’m trying to work on my screen or phone or reading a book. It is so disheartening. Please what should I do?
I learned something from a chiropractor I was seeing, and that was I was having sensitivity to light, mainly sunlight when trying to drive, and I had to use my sunglasses much more. He said dry eyes was causing that, but he also said I had inflammation in my body that made the symptoms worse as I knew I had mild dry eye syndrome. It’s interesting that I do notice that when I eat too many sweets and carbohydrates, my symptoms are worse. I am not diabetic by the way as I know if that is uncontrolled your vision can fluctuate. I have rubbed my eyes at times when they are feeling irritated and probably over the years hasn’t helped things. I try not to rub too hard, but I wonder what damage I have done, although I see an optometrist every 2 years or so and they haven’t mentioned anything. Also might explain when I am in VR I have more noticeable blurry vision and I do use eye drops before putting on my headset. Overall an informative article. Thanks for posting this. 😊❤
Very professional, but, is it really necessary to buy all these products? I can understand the need for some, but the list here is a long one, and it turns me off, bigtime. Could you not bring out one article that concentrated on doing everything possible to promote ‘wetter’ eyes without having to enrich your local pharmacist.
Doctor, for over a year now if I bring words I feet close to my eyes it will blur but the farther I keep it I see it clear, it was only my right eye, but now the left has started behaving like that but it’s more on the right eye, what is the cause and what should I do to correct it? Please give me correct answer
I don’t know if it’s allergies or sensitivity to wind, AC, fans, but my left eye dries out, then, I get this large globules of blurry floaters that seem to be in the INSIDE of the eye along with normal floaters, that settle right in the center, like floaters. Then they’ll be periods that it all clears up. Then, it comes back, usually due to my over use of AC in my car, or a window being opened and wind hitting my eye, that’s the connection I’ve made. I also think it’s time for new glasses, which may be contributing. I just have to visit a doctor like you Dr. EyeGuy!
These stupid satellites cause me to get fluid out of my eyes, and if I rub it it too much like while on bed it starts to hurt, best way is to use water to remove that flluid…. I even think that famous black american piano player was attacked like that to get him blind as he probably didnt have fresh water to clean his eyes at the desert… I watched his movie and they also showed fluid come out of his eyes in his movie… he probably had a military base near him in the desert camp he was… little creeps get people blinded and get away with it while no one can see the but feel their attacks so people shut up…
Hey, very informative article. I was wondering if there is a test to check for dry eyes? I’ve ben to a doctor and eye doctor for an emergency check but they didn’t really check for dry eyes I think. The symptoms seem very similar. Very little water coming in the corner… Or tear duct but sometimes I get a tearflow on the opposite side.. Also very sudden blurry vision, witch has ben pretty constant for weeks now.
Another cause of dry eyes, a lot of people are always dehydrated. I wore contacts for 30 years, my eyes were always dry to the point my optometrist put plugs in my tear duct drains. Then in my forties I had cataract surgery, they had been developing since my late 20’s and I was basically blind in one eye. They gave me back 20/20 vision with no glasses or contacts. However afterwards my eyes were really dry with no contacts to retain the moisture. I mentioned it in front of my fathers nutritionist girl friend. She suggested I was dehydrated and needed to drink more water, and I’ll be damned if she wasn’t right. As long as I drink plenty of water my eyes are fine, but if I forget to hydrate they are dry and cloudy.
Warm water & a clean bathing cloth used to softly wipe the closed eyes from the centre outwards to the edges for at least 10 minutes will greatly improve the problem without the need for expensive products, repeat daily at same time………This info given to me from Addenbrookes Hospital when I had this problem.
Wearing a c pap mask full, over mouth and nose is hard to keep in place thru the whole night. I find at times I get that blurry eye problem with my rt eye only. It seems to dissipate after a few days. Do you think any escaping air from the c pap mask might be doing This? Last december. I had cataract surgery in both eyes. Just a thought. Sandra.
When blurry my eyelids at the lash line are oily, mostly upon awakening. I use saline drops. Make them myself with salt sold for netti pots & distilled water. I use them mostly throughout the night. I have to make sure to wipe the dried crusty material out of the corners before opening my eyes & then adding drops to keep my lids from sticking closed. I’ve tried OTC & Rx drops. They too dry & crust over. The saline drops leave the least amount of crustiness. Don’t know what else to try. Been doing this for many years now. Sure would love to find a good solution to this.
Dr eye guy I have been suffering for 6 months from problems with my eyes due to mold exposure and I’m completely blind in my left eye from scarring from a progressive ulcer and my right eye has been going out for about 2 weeks now I have been complaining about having a ball or something on my eyeball that is preventing me from seeing and out of frustration I started perusal this article and you just literally explain to me what is wrong with my eye now and you explained it to me and my opthamologist didn’t even say anything close to what it could have been other than a corneal abrasion I want to thank you so much because your articles have helped me through this whole thing everything that has gone on with my eyes and I have had a question about I have watched your articles and you have helped me thus far but this article right here really literally just told me everything that is going on with my right eye and now I feel like I’ll be able to save my vision completely I will have to have a corneal transplant on my left eye but I think I’m just going to rock with the one I if I can get my right back into working shapeI want to thank you so much for making these articles because without you I would not know where I would be at literally probably bumping into a lot of wall thank you so much

Hello, thank you for the article! Just a quick question, I’m just wondering, if I consistently take the eye drops does it eventually get better? I’m having consistent dizziness, eye blurriness, eye strain, headaches, migraines, photophobia, heaviness in the eyes which is consistent too it’s really effecting my mental health, and I can’t concentrate in day to day life. I only started the eye drops 2 days ago, I’ve had the symptoms for 2 weeks now. Im just hoping that with consistent use of the drops this will all eventually fade. Thank you for your time, great article! X
I started getting painful dry eyes and blurry eyes after 3 weeks of using accutane and went to my dermatologist where she told me its impossible that accutane is the cause of those problems. I have never had issues with my eyes in my whole life until i used accutane. I then stopped using accutane where the dryness and blurry vision improved a bit but it hasn’t resolved and 4 years has passed already. I guess accutane caused permanent damage to my eyes somehow.
The tips about retinols are nice, thank you!. However, it is NOT true that “all the aging is just photo aging” that is simply wrong. There is also intrinsic aging like lost of bone density, fat lost and also muscle atrophy. So an affirmation like “all aging is just photoaging” can generate false expectations in people, be careful with that. Greetings from Spain! 😉
There is some misleading/inaccurate information in this article. 1. 1:08 Tretinoin is not the “generic name” for prescription strength “retinol” (more accurate to say RETINOID). It is a TYPE of prescription Retinoid. Strictly speaking it is a retinoic acid. Others types of prescription topical Retinoids include Adapalene, Tazarotene, Trifarotene. 2. 1:20 “just going to call” Tretinoin “retinol” because of difficulty with pronunciation is not appropriate. You can refer to it as “retinoic acid” or “prescription Retinoid”. But it is misleading and potentially confusing to viewers and patients if you choose to simplify or dumb it down because it’s “easier”. 3. 4:48 Retin A is tretinoin. It is strictly topical. You do not take systemic Retin A to treat acne. The acne medication you are referring to is Isotretinoin, commonly known as Accutane. Although the names are similar they are in fact different medications. I appreciate you are an eye surgeon and dermatology is not your field of specialisation but you are making these articles to educate viewers and with that comes a responsibility to provide accurate information. Speaking as a fellow medical professional, I hope you too can appreciate that correct terminology and information is important.
Trentinoin (prescription) is not just “higher concentration” then retinol. Prescription trentinoin is retinoic acid. Retinol has to be converted by your skin to retinaldehyde, then to retinoic acid. So it’s a multi step process where trentinoin is already retinoic acid so it doesn’t have to go through all those steps. It’s not just the strength that’s different.
Hi Dr Wong, watched with a lot of interest. I’ve been using tretinoin since July 2023 (1 month) and usually use a pea size on my face once a week. Whatever’s leftover on my fingers, i would gently apply over my eye area, a bit below my eyebrows and below my lower eye lashes. When you say retinol is toxic to the meibomian glands and globlet cells, do you mean when it gets INTO your eyes by accident or when it is absorbed by the skin near your eyes? I wasn’t clear on this despite perusal your article twice. Hope you will be kind to confirm. I do have evaporative dry eyes syndrome. Recent eye check confirmed my meibomian glands is making oil but the oil is not flowing down, it’s just hardened under my eye lids. But I have always been suffering from dry eyes since my 20s and now at 47, it feels even more dry. After seeing your article, am not sure if it’s because of the use of tretinoin around my eyes but it’s only been 1 month of usage. I have been careful not to get any into my eyes but would really like to know if absorption of it via the skin around the eyes can also cause death of the meibomian glands and goblet cells? Thank u so much.
I have severe dry eyes. I have been using Retin A for years. I have been told I have meibomian gland cell death. I just realized that the Retin A is the cause. I have great skin, but my eyes are now bright red. I personally would recommend not using Retin A. I’m sorry that I started to use it years ago. I never used it on my eyelids. I’ve seen an eye doctor for two years and he told me retinoids will kill off the healthy glands.
Thank you very much for this article, it’s a subject I have been wondering about since I decided to start using a 1% retinol cream from NeoStrata (meant for the face) around my eyes once or twice a week. As an Aesthetician I would not recommend clients to do such a thing, but was concerned about the safety for myself around my eye area. I apply it on my eye lids as well in an even smaller quantity. You spoke about applying retinol on the skin under the eyes, but I’m wondering if there are additional concerns for eye health if applied to the entire eyelid as well? Thank you very much!
I have a lot of issues in my right eye, more than my left. Currently doing tests to see which skin treatments and makeup might be making it worse. Constantly using eye drops to help with the tired, irritated feeling. I need to use creams on my aging face. Your article was very informative. Do you have any dry eye advice? I’m 68 and had surgery to remove a piece of skin that formed over my tear duct about 4 years ago. Since then that eye seems to have become dryer than it was. Help!
Hi, I’m hoping you can help me. I started using tretinoin under my eyes maybe 6 months ago and now I have these small wrinkles under my eyes 🙁 I stopped and have been hydrating that area like crazy. I’m 30 years old, do you think with time I will see improvements? I’m almost positive that the tretinoin caused this.
Hi please help.i just bought a serum pack with Vitamin C serum E & Hyaluronic Acid Retinol 2.5% serum E & Hyaluronic Acid and Hyaluronic acid serum with vitamin C and E I have pimples that come up, but I have acne scarring, dark spots and dine lines on my forehead which I want to manage and hopefully get rid off please advise me if this will help.
Please help, somebody. My head is spinning. I’m terrible at skin care and make up. I bought an eye serum and eye cream today for the first time and I’m trying to find some info on how to use it and when to use it. (On clean skin)Do I use my face lotion first, then eye cream and lastly serum? I’m really basic so I don’t have a lot of products (because I find all these things super overwhelming to grasp). I don’t even know what skin type I am. I tried a retinol cream for a week and it fried my skin for weeks. 😫
Very informative! I don’t really want to take a chance using retinol around my eyes, do you have any other suggestions? I have purple under eye circles, many fine lines, and texture ( little tiny bumps) I know there’s a name for it but I just can’t remember. I’m looking for something that might help improve all of those things, any suggestions would be super helpful! Thanks and God bless ❤
Dr., please read my case. 🙏🏼 I’m desperate! 😞 I’ve been using Tretinoin 0.5 everyday for 7 months on my face and 0.25 on eyelids (bottom and top) roughly every 3 days for around 4 months because of acne and it gave me a long deep thin wrinkle under my eye and it seems others lines are appearing around my eyes, too. This happened over night! My skin routine (I do everything dermatologists recommend), diet and exercise are flaweless. So I don’t understand why this happened. My dermatologist and a cosmetic surgeon couldn’t give me any solution. At this point I don’t know what to do. People on internet are divided by 1) continue with the tretinoin, it’ll go away in a few months or, 2) stop it, you will make it worse and irreversible. Please, help! What do I do? I want the youth of my face back. 😢🙏🏼 THANKS for making this article. ❤️❤️❤️
Your skin is beautiful!! You don’t look your age at all. I thought you were around 30 years old!! Wow!! Thank you for your advice!! I appreciate it!! I wear sunscreen all year round with an SPF of 30. I also wear a big floppy hat. It helps to keep the sun off my face. The sun can cause wrinkles around the eyes. I have crow’s feet at my age. I’m 67 years old. I’ve have had crow’s feet my entire life. I didn’t wear sunglasses or sunscreen when I was a child growing up in New York. I lived on Long Island for most of my life. I was born and raised there. So, I was in the sun all summer long. Now, we live in Houston, Texas. I’m in the sun all year round down here. That’s why I wear sunscreen everyday, even on cloudy days. Thank you very much for this article! I appreciate it!! 💖
thank you Dr. Rupa Wong!! i have chronic dry eye and MGD and started using retinol this year. It is a serum formulation instead of a cream, so it is quite messy. From now on, I will be really mindful around my eyes and I will be purchasing a lower percentage and easier controlled retinol when I run out of my current one.
Ive been using Differin all over my face and neck for the last month. I did develop a little bump my eyelid a week ago and I wasn’t sure if i had scratched myself, or if it was a stye. Now I know it’s most likely from the adapalene gel!! I really want to get rid of the light crepey-ness of my inner eyelid, but I’d rather be able to see.
I’ve been using tretinoin for about 2years .Italian version gave me a tiny peelingfor a short amount of time (funny but I enjoyed it)but the German one (Cordess Vas) is a cremier form and no peeling at all.(0.5).I used from the beginning every day,no irritation no side effects..is it working at all? Is it possible that its not working for me? I have sensitive light skin,Thank you for yr answer.
