Are They Redesigning Sonic The Movie?

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer has been released, featuring a complete redesign of the main character, Sonic. This change was prompted by backlash to the original design of the character. Sony and Fast and Furious franchise producer Neal Moritz announced they will team with Sega subsidiary Marza Animation Planet to create a computer-animated/live-action hybrid of the Japanese video game. The filmmakers of Sonic the Hedgehog dramatically revamped the CGI design of their hero, but the question remains whether this was better for the movie or not.

The redesign included thinning Sonic’s legs, changing the size of his head, or redesigning the shape of his eyes. The original Sonic design was reviled by fans who hated the April 2019 trailer. Director Jeff Fowler delayed the movie’s release for three months to redesign Sonic. The universally positive response to the overhaul alleviated fears of a box office disaster.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an upcoming action-adventure comedy film based on the Sega video game series published by Sega. Directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Bradley Russell, the director of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie promises to fix Sonic’s weird design after widespread backlash. The movie’s release has left many hardcore fans of the Sonic franchise very happy.

Does Sonic.exe like humans?

Sonic. exe is a childish character who is obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog and dislikes others who disagree with him. His admiration for Sonic is based on his heroism rather than genuine care for the hedgehog. Sonic. exe is also egotistical, callous, and arrogant, seeing humans as disposable puppets he can manipulate and torture.

The character was accidentally created in the void during a cataclysm involving multiple forms of primordial energy. He found a window to both the human world and Sonic’s world, becoming fascinated with Sonic and shaped his body to match his idol’s appearance. His first laugh indicated that this creature was evil incarnate.

Sonic. exe escaped his birth place and created a world molded around the levels in the video games and began planning his plan of world domination. The original story centers on Tom, a young fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, who claims he has not played glitched or hacked games before but admits that he did not want to after an experience he had.

How long did it take to redesign Sonic?

In response to criticism, Fowler announced on Twitter that Sonic would be redesigned in 2019, leading to the film’s delay from its original release date to February 14, 2020. Artist Tyson Hesse was brought on to lead the redesign, which added an estimated $5 million to the production budget and took around five months. Tom Holkenborg, who previously worked with executive producer Miller on Deadpool, was hired to compose the score. The soundtrack was released alongside the film on February 14, 2020, in both digital and physical formats.

Riff Raff, who had a role in the film but was cut due to controversy against him, appears on the soundtrack. An original song, “BOOM”, by X Ambassadors, was released on January 24, 2020, by Atlantic Records. “Speed Me Up” by Wiz Khalifa, Lil Yachty, Ty Dolla $ign, and Sueco The Child received 15 million streams and 1. 8 billion views for the “Speed Me Up” TikTok challenge. “Friends” by Hyper Potions, which previously appeared as the opening theme of Sonic Mania, also appears, along with arrangements of tracks from Masato Nakamura’s score for the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

Holkenborg attempted to capture the feel of Nakamura’s soundtracks for the Sonic and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 games using Yamaha digital FM synthesizers similar to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console’s Yamaha YM2612 sound chip.

Test footage was screened at the Comic Con Experience in Brazil on December 9, 2018, followed by a teaser poster revealing the silhouette design of Sonic, with the tagline “A Whole New Speed of Hero”. The design received a negative response from critics and fans, with Sonic’s humanoid appearance evoking an uncanny valley response. A second poster was leaked online, and the film’s official Twitter account posted an image of Sonic behind a sign reading: “Can’t a guy work out?” Images of the Sonic design were leaked in March 2019, leading to more fan criticism.

  • The Hog Rider card is unlocked from the Spell Valley (Arena 5). He is a very fast building-targeting, melee troop with moderately high hitpoints and damage. He appears just like his Clash of Clans counterpart; a man with brown eyebrows, a beard, a mohawk, and a golden body piercing in his left ear who is riding a hog. A Hog Rider card costs 4 Elixir to deploy.

  • They listened and acted smart. I mean given the initial strong negative reaction – it was clear that if they continued with the original design – the movie would flop big time, and they would lose major money and reputation, so they couldn’t NOT make the changes. It was a calculated decision, they didn’t do it out of their altruistic kindness for the audience. Movies are a business. Actor pay and all the budget is an investment to make a profit. So they managed to turn around the tides and the movie was a success.

  • The really amazing thing is what a cultural phenomenon this was. The fact that the internet revolted to such a high degree that the studio actually CHANGED the design that late in production? That’s AMAZING. Let’s not let that social phenomenon go unnoted. That’s unprecedented customer interaction on a massive scale.

  • Paramount did the smartest things they usually was very bad at. They listened to the fans, they delayed the release of the movie, they wanted to make changes, they make changes and they went from a disaster to a great success. True fact: This redesigned movie because of it’s success has surpassed Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.

  • The fact that they listened to the fans and redid the Sonic design is why I’m gonna go watch in theaters. I wonder how much it cost to change the design? 🧐👀 (Edit: I wish they would’ve made his arms that tan white instead of making him all blue but I guess that would’ve probably would’ve cost them more)

  • I just saw this in theaters with my younger sister and we laughed so many times, it was such a fantastic film! Probably one of the best newer films, that were based on such a huge franchise, I’ve ever seen. Carrey was absolutely amazing in the role as Eggman, I don’t think anyone else could’ve done that character to perfection. I will definitely watch this again! (Except that part where Sonic did The Floss. I hated that)

  • I saw the movie yesterday and I absolutely loved it! I would see it a million times again! I was basically smiling throughout the entire film! I am so glad that the studios actually listened to the fans and redesigned Sonic to make him more like the article game hedgehog we know and love instead of…. I don’t even know what…

  • What really nails the decision’s “correctness” for me is how expressive he is now. The previous anatomical design simply wasn’t able to emote effectively. The human actors where more defined than the previous design. The “shocked” shot tells it best. In the previous version you couldn’t read his face very well at all. In the new one, no one can mistake what he’s expressing.

  • And 2 years later I am still asking myself, if this was just a publicity stunt. The first and the second movie were quite enjoyable movies, with a ton of loving care to the games and comics. In retrospec this was obviously made by people who enjoy and know the Sonic IP. And those are the same people who greenlit the first Sonic design? “Yeah, looks fine to me. No suggestions. Get the trailer out.” That is really weird.

  • There’s a good reason why the kept Sonic’s arms blue; it was EASIER to animate him in 3D as seen in 2000s era 3D Sonic where his tan arms just clipped through his body when he moves and it feels “disconnected” from the main body whereas the blue arms gave him proper shoulders. Not to mention it feels weird to see holes on his arm sockets in his 3D form when his arms are tan.

  • Just something to think about: if they had Sonic’s new design right away in the first trailer how would fans have reacted? definitely a lot less worse, but they may have had some mixed opinions about the separated eyes and blue arms. Personally I don’t mind either feature and i saw the new design before the old design cuz i wasn’t a Sonic fan back then. I actually really like the separated eyes; not only is it more realistic but it puts a good and not too great contrast between the movie and game designs, plus he looks kind of cute that way :3

  • For the eyes, i’ts technically hyper complicated to make one eye connected. Because the animation is made by tracking, a real actor play the action of Sonic, and an actor have two distinct eyes. I’m happy with this two different eyes personally, but, the thing that decept me a little is the color of her arms, not complicated to change color, just time consuming if you have already done many renders, so, I can understand

  • I hate how they made the ugly sonic because it cringed me out a lot but when I saw the new sonic I was like this is cooked. You know I’m hoping it stays as the new normal sonic if it ever changed to that ugly weird version I would’ve just forgotten sonic was in my life but I’m happy they changed it to a more nicer version of sonic I’m just hoping it never change to that ugliest sonic I have ever seen in my entire life.

  • Oh boy oh boy aren’t they happy about it? They have become one of the highest grossing game based film. They made two films, both of them are success. And they are making their 3rd film and a tv series out of it. Just imagine what happens when you give the fans what they want. A sonic universe is being presented. This is gold mine for sure. <3

  • This y’all’s fault (The ones who bullied him, the ones not, i don’t say their fault), the creator’s did their best to try make a realistic sonic, i didn’t had a problem with the trailer i thought it was just funny and liked it. But please— it dosen’t look bad, because you guys are just shaming a character design just because of their looks. Just like we all insult ugly people and it’s not right Remember to be nicr to ugly people because they may look ugly but they have a kind heart and is still beautiful in their own way

  • My theory is that the original design they showed was just a publicity stunt for the movie. No way would they market a family film with that unrecognisable mutant as sonic. So they made a bad trailer. Made fans mad and got death. Acted like they took in the criticism and made the changes, then boom. Fans happy, movie made a lot of money and got a tonne of people talking. Has to be a pr stunt

  • The only sad thing is that animation wise, the first version was superior when it came to blending and shadows when compared to the final version probably due the limited time they had to completely remake him. But even so, it was the right choice, I honestly would not watch the movie if they kept that design, I would rather go play the games.

  • I still can’t believe this happened. The theory that it was all just a marketing ploy is starting to make more sense to me. But I also kind of what see versions of all 3 films (including the new one coming out) using the original design. Just cause I want to see how bad it would really be and bascially to laugh at it. I should also say, even if this was just a mistake, I don’t blame the animators. I think this was some incompetent business decision or maybe a writer with a strange instinct that should have been run past audiences sooner. The idea that anyone would want a “realistic” Sonic is difficult to fathom.

  • It’s probably not true that the original trailer was fake like others have claimed, but I do find it interesting that at 1:19, the original trailer doesn’t have Sonic holding a ring in his hand. He was there to use it and transport himself back to his own world, I wonder why he didn’t have one orignially

  • I wish they added the original cut to the DVD. Even tho it would’ve been terrible, I would’ve liked to see the original storyline. During the part where Sonic gets caught and goes “meow”, he’s not holding a ring nor falls near a portal. That makes me wonder if the plot was completely changed along with the character design.

  • A song about gangsters crime drama just don’t fit with franchise about speed, as it is about gangsters reflecting on their wasted lives and how future generations are doomed to repeat the violence they committed and perhaps they quite overused of swearing. What did they thinking? Oh and also the peoples who created the old Sonic design are the ones who made the horrible movie “Cats”.

  • The simplest way to describe what the original did wrong was that he looked like an actual Hedgehog. Sonic the “Hedgehog” doesn’t even remotely look close to a Hedgehog other than his spikes which are implied to be just hair so not actual quills. If anything this makes me realize just how special of a design Sonic is when compared to othwr mascots. He really has his own style

  • Looking at the early trailer I wonder if more than just the design of sonic was changed. Like it feels like a slightly different, raunchier tone in a way I can’t explain where the final version is more wholesome and close to the games. I never realized that shot of sonic stretching wasn’t in the final movie of that sonic never runs in the daytime. Meaning that scene was meant for the final battle? It just really goes to show how heavily unfishinished the first trailer was

  • This is how it looks like when you dont get actual feedback from fans while making the movie, this original design is the result. At least they listened to people after they released this atrocity.. So I guess some points are due there, hopefully they learned the lesson.. If you want to distract us, at least do it properly.

  • Who every was responsible? For the original design and the one who approved it should be fired. If know one complained about it pretty sure we would have gotten the ugly and horrifying design of Sonic. I don’t even what to know what Tails and Knuckles would have looked like, it they went with the ugly and horrifying original design.

  • I’m convinced that this was a marketing tactic to get people to watch the movie. I mean think about it, even if the now final design was the first one shown, fans still would’ve gone crazy about the blue arms and two eyes. But, if it’s compared to garbage, then that makes people feel better about it and gives faith that this studio actually listens. And if that’s true, genius. It worked wonders
