One thing that the Jeld~Wen people did very cleverly is chose a name that keeps getting changed from Jeld~Wen to Jenwell, or Jenwald, by the common folk. I ran into that throughout my daily interactions with customers, and beyond my employment there. Honesty, I’ve never run into this with any other name of a company.
Jeld wen quality its a joke lately. I ordered a large shipment of windows from depot and got alot of windows with bad craftsmenship on screen detail as well as being nicely squared frames n many silicone bulking blobs n runs. I was able to correct n tweek them so they would seem presentable. But to me it seemed that were paying employees by the ammount made or minimum n they seemed to had fired quality control department.
Bought 2 double 24″ pre Hungs today for a project in the basement. All I can say is these are the worst pre hung doors you can buy. They’re hinge bound from the factory because the hinge placement is all over the place ( my jamb was plumb and there was 5/8″ difference between the top and bottom hinge. The stops are too tight. The hinge sides of the doors aren’t beveled. What’s going on here for 500$ for both doors I expected an easy install. Now I’m re mortising hinges and pulling stops off to make them plumb? Jeld~Wen was known as the bottom-dollar, low budget option that was loved by multi-billionaire housing developers. There was a formula for installing them that lead to repeated success in mass developments. But every time we sold to individuals for remodeling or some DIY guy building a house way off deep in the country-woods, it seemed we ran into installation problems. Irrate customers. I never knew what the secret of success was because I was just the dumb guy who brought the stuff. Sometimes people would tell me that I needed to replace the defective window already installed and I’d say, “Where’s the nail gun, I’ll give it a first try,” and they’d wave me to just go away.
I am sorry but I have had real fights over warranty issues. Hinges are for the most part pretty standard and inexpensive. You could have just bought some new ones and install them faster than doing this article. Now if they don’t honor their warranty on the insulated glass of a window now that is a REAL Issue. Just my 2 cents worth.
I worked for Jeld Wen door systems in grinnell Iowa. We were repeatedly told to seem out doors that were poor quality. I had a manager tell me that they will have something to fill the whole until they receive a product they are happy with. Management at grinnell was more concerned with quantity then quality. I would never put a Jeld Wen door in my home and I tell people I know not to do the same.
I briefly installed doors for Home Depot. Many new doors come (primed) for paint, including the hinges. They do not have a permanent finish applied. If it’s not gloss white, it’s probably factory applied primer. We would install the doors and prep for paint, but the homeowner was responsible for the final finish coat. I took a window to Home Depot because it was faulty from the manufacturer. The employee said he would show the window to the representative the next time he came around which was in a couple of weeks. I went back in 2 weeks and the window had mysteriously disappeared. I ended up getting a local glass company to replace window. Home Depot sucks and employs unscrupulous people.
