Are Inner Tags Present In Every Coach Purse?

An authentic Coach handbag typically has a unique serial number embossed on a leather patch inside. This number serves as a proof of authenticity and can be found on the inside of the bag, either on a leather creed patch, a small white tag inside the bag, or directly stamped on the inside lining or outer leather, especially on older vintage bags.

There aren’t many hard and fast rules pertaining to the serial numbers used by Coach, but most Coach bags have a number on them. Labels are commonly found on the hardware, outside of the bag, and inside of the bag. For example, each bag should come with the Coach leather creed, which is a leather patch embossed on the inside containing the bag’s serial number. Most Coach bags have a leather creed or story patch, which is a leather patch inside a bag that’s embossed with the bag’s serial number and style number.

Not all Coach bags have serial numbers. There should be a tag inside that says what country it’s from. If that tag has a circle on it, it’s a factory tag. Since the 70s, Coach has included authenticity tags in their bags, made of leather square panels and containing a sequence of alphanumeric characters that indicate the style of the purse.

Real Coach bags usually have a serial number stamped on a leather patch inside the bag, which is an alphanumeric sequence that indicates the style of the purse. Fake Coach bags are often only inked, and when examining a Coach bag, pay close attention to the hardware, exterior, and interior labels. The Coach leather creed typically embossed on the bag’s interior is a good indicator of authenticity.

  • UPDATE: Hi guys, I have discovered yet another format update from this year which is not included in this article – make sure to check out my blog post on this topic as I keep it updated with any new information I get. I’m sure eventually I will have to do another article to tell you all about the updates that will surely happen in the future, but for now, the blog is the most updated version of this. You can find it here: essexfashionhouse.com/blogs/news/the-ultimate-guide-to-coach-serial-numbers If you need help with authentication of a Coach bag, you can find my authentication service here: essexfashionhouse.com/pages/coach-authentication-service

  • When buying an older bag. In your opinion is it worth buying a factory bag? In the past Coach Outlet was the same as in the store and marked with a bullet. Now they make bags specially for the outlet and different leather. (I didn’t realize this change until I had purchased 4 of them. I realized the quality wasn’t the same as the bag I used mostly for the weekend strap started coming apart.

  • Hi there: I have a major question. I have a Marvel Spiderman backpack (2901-svr32) that I know is authentic (tag is right, leather is right, quality is right and it looks the same as the other Marvel Spiderman purse I bought – I bought 2 from the Coach outlet store on line at the same time). I did not notice this until it was too late to return, but one of the purses does not have the Spiderman on the front of the purse. Is this a rare error that Coach made? Does this make it worth more money? Can I return it over a year since it was made wrong? Please help, it was a very expensive purse and I don’t know what to do with it. Thank you so much.

  • Great info! I just bought a vintage saddle bag which code says D7M and made in the USA. Got a bit curious so here I am. Do you happen to know anything about the white creed on their 65th anniversary Legacy editions? Someone said the white creed patches were on the British Tan while the brown ones are for the Whiskey colour. Is this true? Thank you!

  • I just received a West pack from a coach outlet here in Seattle. And you were very helpful luckily. Was what I have? I’m going to think it’s real. Lol Mine says it was made in the Philippines. I didn’t quite get what you said about that. And I do see the c in the number that you’re talking about. But that stands for an outlet, right? I’m so sorry 😂 Thank you very much!! Also, might you be able to tell me what this is? I received a little piece of leather, a very tiny strip with glue on the back. I don’t know what that is. Is that for repair, or is that extra clippings from a fake 😂

  • Hii, I have just bought a second hand tabby 20 in ivory, so this was super helpful! My bag is from a few seasons ago, so I was searching for the style number to confirm that it is the right one in the serial number. Do you know where I could find this information, since I have already looked all over the internet? 🙂

  • Thank you so much for this article, I am a huge coach fan and have some 1941 series so this information is very useful!✨😊 Beside the creed, I guess most of the 1941 series have special mark (two different mark with 1941 in the cross) which is hidden under the corner and mine also have this mark. I thought most of the mark has 1941 in the cross but one of my bags mark says 17SS in the cross mark. And I am wondering that if this is real and stands for Spring and summer 2017? Thank you always for your special contents and looking forward to your next article❤️

  • I dont have any questions about the serial number. But can you make a article about the Logo? The original horse and carriage. I bought a pre loved coach Bennett bag from Japan but the horse seemed unusual. For me it looks like a dog. And everything looks very cheap. I have searched that the logo design varies but to what extent?

  • Hi. Some friend of ours gave us two Coach bags. I looked at the creed patch of one of them and it has a serial number that starts with a J with four numbers, and after the dash it starts with an F with five numbers. I looked up at your blog about the serial numbers and my bag’s first number before the dash has 1668 on it, and the other has 49862. Does that mean that the bag is genuine?

  • Hi! I read your article and it has been so helpful. I ran into a very tricky bag that online authenticators struggle with. My code has a letter followed by 5 digits, specifically it’s H22202. The code behind that is legit. Do you think this bag was made in February 2022 and is legit, or would it be a fake? I know this is a lot to ask but would love to read your opinion. Thank you in advance!

  • OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH! I literally got my coach bag for Christmas and went to a mall and was so embarrassed when all of the alarms kept going off. I just now reached into a small pocket and found the security tag. Thank you so much! Like, you have no idea. I haven’t used my bag in like 5 months because I was scared to use it lol.

  • Thank you for this article!! I recently bought a coach wallet and started using it last month and every time I walk into a store, the alarms would go off. It was SO annoying.. Today I walked into 3 stores and set off alarms at each one and my mom finally asked me “what in the world is in your bag that keeps doing this?!”… I finally decided to google it and I found your article.. After perusal it, I found the sensor inside the care instructions booklet in my wallet. 😅

  • Just had this problem today while grocery shopping. Even ended up getting stopped and being asked to go back through the scanners. I could not figure out what was causing it because I had nothing in my bag that could be the cause. Looked up why my coach bag sets off alarms and your article was the first to show up. Thank you so much, this will save me lots of embarrassment and racial profiling!

  • I just found this tag in my Coach Glitter Heart card case that I got months ago. I knew there was a sensor in there because when I began to use the case, it set off most entry and exit alarms at most stores, so irritating! There’s not many compartments and I thought I had looked it over well enough, but I didn’t know what I was looking for until I found your article! Sure enough, deep down at the bottom of the inside slot, there was the fucker…LOL! My husband said to save it and he’s gonna drop it in his sister’s bag next time he sees her…haha! He’s a joker!

  • Thank you so much. A security guy at the grocery store clued me into the problem coming from my purse as evidently Coach bags are notorious for this. But he thought they were sewn in. I’m glad I don’t have to tear out stitching to find it. I certainly didn’t think there was something like that in a pocket that I hadn’t noticed but it was. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain. It’s been very embarrassing.

  • Wow!! Never realized this has been going on for so long!! This was my first experience having this issue 9/2024. This was also my first time ordering a coach product from the outlet site. Anyways!!! 😅 I found it in my wallet. 😂😂. Thank you for putting this info out there ❤❤ Your content continues to help after all these years. 😅❤❤

  • Wooooow I came to the right place. My teenage daughter started leaving her back pack purses in the car because of this😩😩😩 Thanks so much!!! With your article I found one in 2 coach purses and one Kate spade… All 3 were purchased online. I wish I had looked into it sooner, but today it went off in city gear and I didn’t think it was gonna stop beeping it beeped so long as we entered the store and that brought me here. You are a Blessing 🖤🖤🖤

  • Thank you so much, I found it in the pocket of my new Kate Spade bag. I purchased my bag from Ross Dress for Less, today. I walked out the door and the alarm went off. The cashier told me it was okay, they deactivated the alarm, don’t worry about it. I love the bag but I don’t like unnecessary embarrassing moments.
