Why Did Hertz Interior Charge Me A Clean Fee?

Vincent, a Hertz Gold member, booked a seven-day rental for his 90-year-old mom’s holiday trip in Ohio. Hertz Gold charged him a cleaning fee, which was later confirmed as a damage fee. The car interior was clean when returned and not smoked in during the rental. However, upon checking a receipt from an earlier rental, Vincent discovered that the fee was a cleaning fee for a car they rented six months ago.

Hertz has dropped one of the most unpopular surcharges in the car rental industry: the cleaning fee. The company’s terms and conditions previously warned that all rental vehicles should be returned in the same condition they were rented in. However, Hertz has now dropped the $60.50 cleaning fee for excessively dirty vehicles that require cleaning beyond Hertz’s standard cleaning practice.

The other party was at fault, and Hertz was paid by the insurance company for the damages. They are now charging the customer $165 DV fee (depreciated value) instead of the original $140 fee. De-smoking requires the vehicle to be taken out of service for up to 24 hours, so a $400 cleaning fee may apply when evidence of smoking is present.

Typical cleaning fees range between $50 and $100. Under the new policy, only vehicles returned “excessively dirty” will incur the fee. After checking the mileage, the driver suddenly declared the car’s interior was “excessively dirty” and informed him to charge a $100 cleaning fee. Charging is your responsibility while renting the vehicle, and any use of public charge points must be in accordance with their terms.

In conclusion, Hertz Gold has dropped the cleaning fee and has refunded the original $400 fee for a customer who found animal hair in the car.

  • I bought a 2023 model 3 from hertz and it was the best deal ever. I was a little disappointed because most of the cars had curb rash on the wheels but wasn’t a huge issue. Got a 23 with less than 20k miles. ICE cars I could imagine are driven hard but EV’s have no major moving parts. Still has tesla warranty so I wasn’t worried. Haven’t had any issues since I bought it and got it for a fraction of the price

  • Honestly you can find Tesla model 3s standard range under 25k all day. I get that these ones are maybe 2-3k cheaper, but you’re honestly risking such a worn down car over 2-3k. Not even worth it at that point. Most dealerships cannot even sell you a car unless there is 80%+ tread, not sure if hertz has that rule but you could potentially be spending another 1k on tires right off the bat 🤷. I feel like these cars should be all priced around 20k right now if they a rental and get the 4k off on top of that. That’s just my opinion

  • Great article Dennis. Regarding battery health there is the site Recurrent, that uses Tesla’s API to view the battery health of the car. You just need the VIN. I also recommend renting any car from Hertz before buying it and having a Tesla Service Center or a 3rd party mechanic look it over. The rental fee is subtracted from the price of the car if purchased. The new Model 3 RWD Long Range with 1.99% apr makes those used Hertz models in the high $20k range less of a deal. All the “I’d never buy a used rental” talk in the comments is hilarious, given anyone who regularly buys their cars used has probably already bought a car with “Fleet” listed in the Carfax or car history. Fleet is the term used for formal rentals. Excessive engine redlining, hard acceleration, and immediately driving after cold starts, either don’t negatively affect EVs or don’t apply at all. Also most of the old predictions of excessive battery degradation from Excessive DCFC isn’t being backed up to current longterm data. A 2022 $15k 80k Model sounds like a great first car for a teen.

  • Hey, you’re supposed be able to transfer your used EV tax credit directly to the dealership and have it taken off the price. I know the dealership has to register with the government to be able to do that. If so, it’s possible Hertz didn’t do that. That would be insane. Maybe the sales guy didn’t know about that?

  • After looking at Hertz Tesla, I found most to be scary purchase. This is the case for Tesla mainly because of their Hertz Uber deal. On average they are about 65k miles for $26k. I gave up on Hertz and found amazing single owner sale to be way better. Ended up buying 2023 Model 3 (less than 1 yr old) with 9,000 miles for $24k. It was spotless, super clean, cared for, and amazing deal. I am so glad I didn’t buy the Tesla from Hertz and went with private sale.

  • The batteries last about 100,000 miles, that’s why they are so cheap. You’ll find out soon enough. Watch the countless articles of people buying them to use for door dash and Uber. SURPRISE after a year all that so called money you saved will be in the battery replacement not your bank account. Look it up.

  • The key points are 120k mi- past battery warranty. These cost least. 50k – warranty over but power and drivetrain still active till 120k. Low than 50k miles – probably in a collision and repaired. Most expensive. I go for the 70-80k, and have to do about $1000 of suspension, tires, shocks, control arms to rejuvenate the thing. The real bonus is you are still state of the art and the software is just now blossoming to full fruition. So you can be state of the art in a severely discounted vehicle. Also add a bed and a fridge! You can camp in your Tesla and save hotel bills.

  • I bought the highland model 3 a month ago brand new. It had 154 miles on the odometer and some idiot 18 year old without a license turned hard into my car and destroyed the front end of my car. My front left wheel got bent and pushed back and now the car is repaired. This tesla is my first car and got repaired but Ive been treating it like sht and been driving it extra hard(illegally) ever since the accident because it doesn’t feel the same after knowing the car is brand new and now has historical damage to it. I wasted my hard earned money on a brand new car that got destroyed 3 days later since my delivery day. Im not even livid except mentally exhausted from this headache.

  • We just went through the bait and switch today. We found a 2019 Ford Ranger for a little over $17,000 and called yesterday to see if they had it in stock. Today we drove to the dealership and, you guessed it, it was already sold when we got there. The salesman did say they had one for a few thousand dollars more and it had fewer miles but we left with nothing.

  • Hertz doesn’t give you the instant rebate at the time of sale? How lame is that for a major company not to be registered with the IRS to offer that? I’m just a small one man dealer and got registered and can do that rebate. Not everybody has enough income to make the tax credit worthwhile, but anybody with low income can get the instant rebate and save 30% off the sale price.

  • What a F.cked up deal!. To get the $4000.00 used tax credit, the car has to be 2022 or older, the car can’t cost more than $25,000, and the buyer can’t make more than $75,000 annually or $150,000 joint married return or they’ll take the tax credit back when you file your taxes. NO THANK YOU! YOUR NOT REALLY DOING ANYONE ANY FAVOR!

  • Dennis, here is my honest concern. Some of these are former rideshare vehicles and the owners charged them often from 10 to 90% and many were supercharged a couple times a day. In these sorts of cases the batteries start to present trouble shortly after warranty expiration. I’ve heard of cases where battery restoration is required as early as 125k miles or so. There has to be a full analysis on the condition of these batteries in this regard. It’s not enough to say that they have warranty left on them; it’s about how much life they may have after the warranty due to battery health and how they were charged. This personally kept me from considering one myself to use for ridesharing.

  • Don’t Tesla’s depreciate their value super fast? Is it really not concerning buying a used one from Hertz? I guess the point of them being electric might make that less of a concern buying one used from Hertz than a gas car, but the depreciation and the company Hertz selling the car would spook me pretty bad.

  • If you already have a car, STOP. Don’t even look. Get out of the market and stay out until you NEED to get back in. Prices won’t come down if you keep buying cars when you already have one that runs and drives. Please stop. PS 33k for 2 years of driving in one year’s time is WAY too high. It should be a MAXIMUM of half that. That’s a 12-15k car.

  • In my experience, I purchased a used M3 2022 and returned it less than 24 hours later. It made sounds worse than what I’ve heard on my 08 Ford Focus 😢 they wanted 24k for 98k miles. Got a 20 M3 from Tesla in TX for 25k with 25k miles with FSD computer 🎉 Wouldn’t trust Hertz or their used vehicles tbh (also mind you it was another price online when I called to have them secure it for me for a test drive and they raised the price by 5k in the 20m it took me to drive down there and almost didn’t honor the original for me in person)

  • Hertz auts sales is a joke. Wouldn’t let me look at the car even with a rent to own scheduled. Sold a car while I was waiting for a key.. wouldn’t let me test drive a car at all… Basically they had people they were selling to but wouldn’t sell one to me. Pretty sure they had someone doing under the table deposits.
