Why Did Everyone Miss Out On Home Improvement Episodes?

Al Borland was created as a temporary place-holder on the ABC sitcom Home Improvement, a character that was not Tim Allen’s original Tool Time sidekick. Richard Karn portrayed Al Borland for eight seasons between 1991 and 1999, with episodes not aired in order of production code number or original airdate. The series began airing on cable in 2002 on superstations TBS and WGN America.

Karn also starred as Fred Peters in the Hulu series Pen15 and was the fourth host of Family Feud from 2002 to 2006. In the show, Tim and Jill (played by Patricia Richardson) need to decide their future and reminisce about the past eight years. Al gets married, and women constantly flirt with him, causing him to lose sight of his priorities and making Ilene. When Tim is carted away in the ambulance, Al must finish out the show on his own.

From seasons three through five, Al went out with Dr. Ilene Markham, an orthodontist who was a sister of one of Jill’s co-workers. They got engaged, but Al’s last appearance on Home Improvement was the eighth season Christmas episode “Home for the Holidays” on December 8, 1998. Al finds out his ex-fiance Ilene is engaged and begins hanging around the Taylor house too much. At Jill’s insistence, Tim takes Al out to a singles club.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas’ departure was due to his desire to take time off to focus on academics. His last appearance was when Al is asked to host an instructional video, but Tim becomes obsessed with stylistic concerns. Tim tries to cheer Al and Heidi up, but Heidi reveals she is pregnant. Morgan arrives, asking them to burn down the set.
