I have now watched this thing about 20 times with the slowest speed. I can not see anything touching the holstered gun at all……. I don’t know how the striker mechanism works on the 320 vs a Glock. The Glock not only has a trigger safety but an internal safety under the slide. Does the sig have something similar?
The P320 has been known to fail a drop test if dropped at a certain angle. (Barrel at 120 Degrees, I believe, which places the rear of the slide and the dovetail flush against the impact surface. The angle of the kick and the position of the officer’s firearm coincides with this.) SIG claimed to have fixed it and I’m not sure if any further tests were done. In this case I’d be curious to know if the Dept replaced all their P320s after SIG “fixed” the issue or if they were rolling around with the faulty Gen 320s. My guess is they did not. Chances are the Dept heard about the faulty guns but had cashed out on updating their armory a few years ago and weren’t willing to switch them out on the basis of “rumors”. If you work in government, you know how much of a pain in the ass it is to get new kit.
How can it be denied at this point. It’s been almost ten years of this stuff happening with the 320’s. I like the gun and I like shooting my 320 a lot but I’ll never carry it. Sig ain’t gonna do shit. It is incumbent on the end user to act in their own best interest and get the word out too. If high points fucked up like this we would be melting down piles of them.
I have never owned a sig but I can use a lil common sense and guess that whatever holster he is using may not be the right one and when he bent over and pressure was put onto the gun it pushed against the trigger with the holster ….. and I’m saying this because it never went off the whole time standing there until he bent over and put pressure on it
The P320 is a piece of garbage, and Sig now have a track record of releasing defective guns. Everything Sig has made as of late has been a literal trash can of issues and returns. The P365 and all it’s issues (sights popping loose, broken springs, redesigned striker, primer drag). The P322 and barrel leading. Even the new battle rifle the army adopted has an issue with magazine over insertion, effectively siezing the gun. But I digress. These P320 holster discharge issues are a chronic issue and documented over hundreds of cases.
While guns are typically tested (realizing tests can vary), all the other interfaces (holsters, belts, clothing, other equipment, etc.) may not be tested. Plus police are fighting with drunks, bad guys, etc. Plus both some police/civilians stick loaded guns in purses, glove boxes, etc. Therefore one option is all police guns should have grip safeties. Just look at the 1911.
Not saying it isn’t a problem, but most PD armorers haven’t done the voluntary upgrade. I see PD trades come in all the time that still have the old heavy trigger and no disconnector cut in the slide. With the P320 being born from the P250, they had a similar trigger as the classics, when first released. Those heavy triggers would tilt back on their own with movement and potentially fire. The most we saw out of that was the drop issue and people hitting the pistol with a hammer. The other problem with the old trigger is that it would indeed actuate with movements such as the officer’s in this article, playing around. Not his fault. I could also be wrong, but wanted to at least put the information out there.
As a previous 1st Gen P320 owner. I’m fully aware of the recall and supposed fix. However, this gets me wondering. Is this a holster issue? I can’t imagine a leather or kydex holster applying so much pressure on the slide that it bypasses internal safeties. I could see a holster somehow manipulate a trigger. While this wasn’t a dropped pistol, it didn’t discharge until he started bending over, possibly applying some sort of force on the holster. I’m NOT denying Sig has its issues with the p320, but I do believe this needs to be further researched and not just by Sig, because this could be a holster issue.
The gun is not holstered properly before he bends over, grabs the dudes legs and rams into his partner’s belt. Something in the holster stopped the gun from being holstered properly, after the incident, the gun is completely seated in the holster. The Yankee Marshal does a article breakdown with close ups…
The article clearly demonstrates a negligent discharge, and not a safety issue with the P320. Look at how the firearm is holstered prior to the discharge and afterwards – it moved. Sig has better article quality it shows the hood open so the gun was no longer locked in and it was out of the holster enough for the trigger to be exposed and with the fact that it is a light barring holster it is much easier for obstructions to get in there. The gun went off when the cops body put pressure on the trigger.
I trust and love my German made SIG P228. The new generation of sigs are not the same; different many ways. I love my glocks, i dont have to worry about things i shouldnt have to worry about. Ive considered maybe getting one, but not after this article. One incident like this way too many. It is almost impossible with the Glock Safe Action system for the gun to randomly go off.
Would love some details on this. What was the holster? Was it the right holster for that gun? Is it in good condition? How many rounds through the gun? Something caused it to go off. So what was it? Would love to be able to get a good look at that exact holster and gun. Check the condition of each. Looked like it went off when he bumped into the guy next to him. Was that gun all the way down in the holster? Did something from the other officers belt poke into it? So many questions. It did not go off on its own no matter what anyone says. Something caused it to go off. The only question is is that a defect with the gun? if so it can be recreated. Is the gun damaged? Is the holster damaged? Does something on the holster protrude into the trigger guard?
I had to watch this a lot of times at slow speed but the pistol fired when it hooks on the adjoining officer’s belt. It did Contact something else when it fired. articles I’ve watched analyzing this seem to think the pistol went off when the officer was clear of the other officers and already holding the suspect’a legs in the air.
Huge mistake to use ANY striker fired pistol. This will not happen with hammer fired DA/SA or DAO handguns. (revolver OR semi-auto) Dump the SIG P320 and go back to SIG P226, Beretta 92 series, S&W 39/59 series, CZ 75 series, etc. HAMMER FIRED, DA/SA or DAO. Problem solved. Permanently. I have been carrying a handgun every day for 50 years, as a police officer and retired police officer. They haven’t made a striker fired handgun I would load and attach to my body.
