I’d forgotten that this show ran for almost the entirety of the ’90s. My brain tends to associate it with a single homogeneous period in my life, yet nothing could be further from the truth – I watched it with my family from 6th grade until I was a freshman in college! So much changed during that time span. It was kinda nice to have that constant that we could all sit down and enjoy for so many years.
I used to love this show. I had a major crush on Randy and wanted to be his girlfriend and I hated lauren because of that. I do like Tim’s new show Last Man Standing but why do get the feeling that it’s so similar to Home Improvement? in HI he has three sons, lives in Detroit and owns his own tv show. I was on my way down here, I stopped at a convenience store. By all accounts, Patricia Richardson and Tim Allen were EXACTLY like their on screen characters when it came to the boys. She told them to do their homework, tuck their shirts in, and behave, while he encouraged their juvenile behavior and even had arm farting contests with them. I was a little young to watch this when it was originally on but I do remember some of it. lol. I just remember the intro with Tim Allen’s EEEAAUUGGGGHH?! grunt. I think the show had so much success because you literally watched the kids grow up on camera from cute boys to heart throb teens. Season 1: Jonathan and Zachary were 10 and Taran was 7. By Season 8 that would make Jonathan and Zachary 18 and Taran 15. They would’ve had a season 9 but Tim Allen and Patrcia Richardson both declined.

I would love to see the unaired pilot of this with Frances Fisher as Jill. Was she truly as serious and over-the-top dramatic in this role as people made her out to be? I am glad that Pat Richardson ended up in the role. She deserved a successful show after the string of short-lived ventures she had.
Actually, “Home Improvement” had several closing credit themes composed by Foliart; however, in the vast majority of the show’s episodes, these were played as background music over the episode’s blooper reel. A few episodes like “A Taylor Runs Through It”, “What a Drag”, “Tool Time After Dark” (in that case, only after a brief montage of clips from past episodes featured in that episode) and “Love’s Labor’s Lost” had only a closing theme play over the end credits.
I could never get into this show. I never thought Tim Allen was funny, the ‘MORE POWER!” focus was disgusting, the show was incredibly sexist, and I am always amazed this dang thing lasted 8 years. That said, you have to give the show credit for one thing. Usually, the trope of the “self-help” sitcom is to show the protagonist was an expert on the job, but an incompetent at home. Tim Taylor is incompetent everywhere, which is where the “laughs” are supposed to come from. Last time I saw that approach was John Astin’s “I’m Dickens, He’s Fenster.” But John Astin could act, and he was a great comic. Tim Allen is neither of these. Theme music was interesting but I thought grating over the long haul.
