Which Paint Is Ideal For Metal Windows That Are Outside?

Combicolour Metal Paint by Rust-Oleum is a top choice for exterior metal paint, offering a smooth and easy-to-adhere surface. It is suitable for outdoor metal surfaces and can be applied using a brush or roller. Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Exterior Paint is the best overall option, followed by Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior Latex Paint.

To paint aluminium windows, use paintbrushes or rollers appropriate for the size of your window frame and sandpaper with different grits (80-120) to smooth out rough spots. Spray paint is the best paint for painting almost anything metal, as it adheres well and goes on quickly. Most general-use spray paints will work for this project, but double-check that the paint says it is appropriate.

There are two main types of paint for aluminum: acrylic and epoxy. Acrylic paint provides good adhesion, durability, and resistance to fading, while epoxy paints offer excellent durability, chemical resistance, and adhesion. Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane trim enamel is recommended for its durability, and 2-3 coats per window are recommended. Dulux 300g Metalshield Etch Primer Spraypak Light Grey in combination with Dulux 300g Metalshield Epoxy Enamel is also recommended.

To protect metalwork, apply a coat of metal primer like Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer to the frame and allow it to dry for up to eight hours. Water-based metal paints provide a protective finish, and tough enamel-based paint designed for marine or outdoor use offers the best protection and durability.

Rust-Oleum, Krylon Color Master, Behr pro-E600, and Rexpro metal sealers are the best paints and protectants for metal surfaces. Use a trim paintbrush to apply multiple thin coats of exterior-grade acrylic or latex paint formulated for metal, or spray paint.

What is the most durable exterior paint for metal?

Combicolour Metal Paint by Rust-Oleum is a top-rated exterior metal paint that is heat-resistant, requires only one coat, and provides a perfect finish. To apply it, wash the surface thoroughly, remove any residue, and dry it using ammonia and water or vinegar-based solutions. Use a microfibre cloth to wipe down the surface and remove any rust build-up. A wire brush dipped in vinegar and sandpaper can also be beneficial.

After drying, apply primer by covering the entire surface with the chosen paint. Allow the paint to dry for around an hour. Use a scuttle and paint roller to apply the paint, ensuring even coverage. Apply the first coat of paint, ensuring it is suitable for galvanised metal. Allow the second coat to dry completely before applying a second coat for a perfect finish.

Rusted metal requires different paint for different surfaces, such as aluminum, iron, and steel. If the surface is not rusted, follow the same advice for rusted metal, as it may be prone to rust in the future. Combicolour Metal Paint by Rust-Oleum is a versatile and effective paint for exterior metal surfaces.

What exterior paint lasts 10 years?

Exterior acrylic paint typically lasts 5-10 years, with latex and oil-based paints slightly less. However, these estimates are not universally applicable due to factors like climate, material, paint brand, and job quality. To estimate the project’s lifespan, consider these factors when preparing to paint your home:

  1. Climate: Climate can affect the paint’s longevity, while the material used, paint brand, and job quality can affect the time needed for repainting.

Do you need to prime metal before painting?

Preparing metal surfaces before painting is crucial for a high-quality, long-lasting paint job. Primer improves paint adhesion, prevents corrosion, and creates a smooth surface for a professional finish. Skipping this step can lead to poor adhesion, increased corrosion risk, and uneven finish, compromising the durability and appearance of your project. Following the proper steps, including cleaning, sanding, and choosing the appropriate primer, will ensure the best results. This step is essential for protecting outdoor structures and enhancing the look of metal furniture.

Is it better to paint or spray paint metal?

Spray-can paint is a convenient method for painting metal, particularly for contoured pieces like patio furniture or wrought-iron fences or railings. However, the finish may be less uniform and may require multiple coats. Proper ventilation and a respirator are essential when spraying paint. Brush-on paint, on the other hand, takes longer to apply but offers a smoother, durable finish. Both water-based and oil-based versions are available. Primer is essential for painting metal surfaces, and if the surface has been previously painted, remove old paint, rust, debris, grease, and dirt using sandpaper, a scuffing pad, or wire-brush tool.

Sanding can also smooth away imperfections. Safety precautions include using a dust mask, respirator, protective goggles, gloves, and working in a well-ventilated area. When grinding away rust with a wire rotary tool, earplugs are recommended for ear protection.

Do I need to sand metal window frames before painting?

The article provides a guide on how to paint aluminium window frames, recommending the Dulux 300g Metalshield Epoxy Enamel Gloss Spray Paint New Machine Grey. It advises thorough cleaning, wiping down to remove grease, dirt, and debris, sanding the surface, and masking areas to avoid overspray. The paint is recommended for its durability and rust protection, and no primer is needed for new bare steel, wrought iron, or pre-painted metal surfaces. An etch primer can also be used for other topcoat paints.

How do you paint metal so it doesn’t peel?

To prepare metal surfaces for paint, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the surface with mineral spirits to remove grease and apply a rust-inhibitive primer. For painted surfaces, remove dust with a clean, dry cloth, de-gloss the surface with light sanding, and wipe with mineral spirits.
  2. Remove loose and peeling paint by hand wire brushing, sanding, or scraping. Power tool cleaning can help remove paint quickly and easily, but it can polish metal surfaces, potentially causing paint-adhesion problems.
  3. Remove rust by using a brush to clean off loose rust, sand the area, and apply a high-quality rust-inhibitive primer (e. g. Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer).
  4. Repair small holes and dents by sanding the area until bare metal and wiping with a degreaser mixed with mineral spirits. For small holes, inject an appropriate epoxy-based composite directly into the hole and/or dent, while for larger holes, apply epoxy filler to the edge of the hole, cut a piece of fiberglass mesh approximately one inch larger than the hole, and press it into the filler.
  5. Prime the surface by considering the type of metal to be coated, desired appearance, performance requirements, and environmental conditions. Professionals recommend two types of metal primers: rust converters and galvanized metal primers. A galvanized primer is appropriate for metals like aluminum that prevent paint from adhering to the surface. Iron oxide and zinc chromate primers can also be used on most metal surfaces, including interior and exterior iron and steel.
  6. Prime immediately after cleaning to prevent dust or dirt accumulation and flash rust from forming. Performance Painting offers various painting systems and techniques to complete various interior and exterior projects according to individual specifications. What kind of paint do you use on metal windows?

Aluminum window and door frames can be painted using acrylic or epoxy. Acrylic paint offers good adhesion, durability, and resistance to fading, but may not last as long as epoxy. Epoxy paints offer excellent durability, chemical resistance, and adhesion, withstand harsh weather conditions, and provide a long-lasting finish. However, they are more expensive than acrylic. Aluminum frames are resistant to corrosion, but using corrosion inhibitors can extend their lifespan. If the frame is exposed to the outdoors, ensure the paint is designed for it, as exterior paints can withstand UV rays, temperature changes, and moisture, extending their lifespan.

  • G’Day Chris great vid thanks for the demonstration! I see you use a spray can for this residential demo and a spray run for a commercial demo. Which would you recommend in a residential DIY setting? Also, was there any particular type of primer and paint that’s best suited to aluminium anodised? Sorry if you’ve answered this already (Might be good in the description) given 5 stars on facebook.

  • great article.. i have painted aluminum windows that are an ugly forest green ..been quoted an arm & a leg for new ones! Is it possible to just coat over the top or strip back the paint to coat in a different color. or could i scuff up the surface & paint over. if you could point me in the right direction ..would be much appreciated.

  • Hi Chris, Thank you for the article. I am purchasing a newly built home and don’t care for the white aluminum/metal window panes that stand out against the earth-tones of the exterior. If I were to have a contractor change the pane color would it be the same process you showed above or would the white paint first have to be removed from the aluminum/metal pane? Or even worse, do the panes have to be replaced?

  • Or, you could have spent a fraction of the time and less material by simply popping off the aluminum glazing bead and painting them on a drop sheet. Which comprised about 95% of what you’d painted there. Then there’s the question of why someone would bother to paint those old hollow-frame windows (from the 50s-60s). Worst window design ever conceived by man… except perhaps if installed in San Diego or Phoenix.
