Nick, I have been perusal you for years. I love you! But this article is the best! My husband and I agree 100% with everything you said. Enough already with the pretentiousness of celebrities. Your honesty was appreciated. My motto for 2024 for is “You do You.” Don’t justify, don’t make excuses- own it.
Saying about interesting house tours, I really love Yit, because they show you modern Chinese architecture, and often they have stunning antique details there, like few centuries old, and treat it with respect, integrating into the space. They often lack any translation, even subtitles, but I am still able to get the point))
I live in eastern Pennsylvania. The British-influenced homes go quite well around here and the rest of the northeast (due to all the British settlers, pretty much ruling this corner of the country). That’s actually what I want in my dream home. But I also plan on staying in the northeast. I’ve seen a few gorgeous homes out here that have a very Arizona ranch-like look to them. And while I appreciate them, they do look out of place. But as it’s not everywhere, it doesn’t bother me. But that’s always been something I’ve kept in mind for my dream home. I really want it to fit in with the region.
I appreciate this article. I’m starting a renovation on my condo and so consuming a lot of interior design content. The wastefulness is actually really garish in this industry, from throwing away perfectly good quartz (which has a HUGE carbon footprint) to ripping out good wooden flooring to put in plastic flooring (nothing luxury about it, marketing really did a number on this). It makes me so so sad. I have no one to rant to so I’m leaving this comment here instead lol
Nick, I would love to see you on Queer Eye! Bobby Berk is leaving, so they will need a new interior design cast member- they should call you. Also with regard to AD overall, I’ve generally stopped perusal the home tours, but I still really enjoy the neighborhood walking tour articles and the ones that are more architectural history. Those are all narrated by actual architects and are fun and really informative.
I love what you said about sustainability, and these holier than thou celebrities that think they are saving the planet. A perfect example is Al Gore, who preaches to everyone else about saving the planet, but his house has the carbon footprint of 21 regular size homes – now that is an “inconvenient truth”!
OMG yes on the points about overconsumption and these ginormous homes where they feign giving any fucks about sustainability. Though for me these things are a HUGE problem, not just an annoyance. These are the behaviors and mindsets that define the sickness our society is suffering greatly from (and forcing the rest of the planet to suffer as well). It’s a disease of the mind and heart and I wish we were at the point where we could acknowledge THAT.
I agree with you Nick. AD has become annoying and lost its luster. Ad is irrelevant because its less about ground braking innovative design concepts and more about the superficial lives of the rich and famous. Yawn! And, by the way, most AD magazine front page feature stories are nothing more than a veiled ad because they feature a home that a celebrity is planning to put up for sale.
High Pastiche architecture is an American tradition in architecture…and the best architecture, regardless of location, should have a sense of history. Is Tan’s house over the top? yes. is it done well…yes…Victorian and Tudor inspired architecture was very popular in the mid west and western United states with early settlers. Traditional farmhouse architecture is historically popular in california and all over America…”Modern Farmhouse” was popularized by the Gaines who happen to live in Texas…it’s not unique to Texas. I suggest you watch Brent Hull’s youtube website to understand the importance of building a home with a story and a sense of history. I’m always amazed by youtube interior design enthusiasts that don’t actually bother to research the subjects they give their opinions on…a sign of the death of expertise.
Jimmy Hendrix’s guitar made from wood from his grandmother’s bungalow 🤣 Great content and every single utterance, picture, article, etc., 💯 on point! Sustainability, U.S. overconsumption, AD sycophantic obsession with celebrities—this vid says everything most of us plebs shout about. Great job, Nick!👏👏👏
