White ceiling paint is the most popular choice for homes, but it can also be a refreshing change of pace. High-gloss paint can bounce light around a room, creating a light, breezy vibe when the walls are white or very light neutral. To give the room a fresh and clean look, choose a soft, pale color like pale peach, pale gray, sky blue, or pale green.
Matte and flat paint formulas tend to be ideal options when selecting a finish for your ceiling. Glossier finishes bounce more light around a space, casting shadows that can be a challenge. Our Interior Designer shares her six “go-to” ceiling paint color options, including Stone Harbor, Benjamin Moore Gateway Gray, Sherwin-Williams Silvery Blue, Benjamin Moore Studio Green, Farrow and Ball Pale Smoke, Benjamin.
Various shades of white are the most popular colors for ceilings, and they have a function in making the room look more inviting. For textured ceilings, it is best to paint them the same white as the trim to help them belong to something rather than stand out. White is likely the most popular ceiling paint color for homes, not just out of tradition but also because homeowners and designers favor it.
In summary, choosing the right ceiling paint color for your home project is crucial to ensure it matches the interior and creates a welcoming atmosphere.
📹 Painted Ceilings- Bold Colours!
Have you heard the term, the ‘Fifth Wall’? Yup, that’s the ceiling. And guess what? It doesn’t HAVE TO BE WHITE! I have loads of …
What color paint do builders use on ceilings?
The most common color used on ceilings is “Swiss Coffee White”, a soft white with a hint of beige. This color contrasts darker wall colors well and hides imperfections nicely. However, Campbell has seen requests for dark grays and bright colors to change things up. Ceilings are typically painted if the customer wants to change the color or if there is drywall damage. Sometimes, people are willing to make a drastic change and be bold with the ceiling color.
If you decide to brave a ceiling on your own, mask off all areas of the flooring and use a 3/8-inch nap roller to minimize paint spraying off the roller. Use an extension pole and keep a wet edge when painting the ceiling, not stopping until the whole ceiling is done to avoid visible lines.
What is the best color to paint a ceiling?
To create a harmonious and cohesive space, use a neutral ceiling color with complementary shades that don’t create harsh lines. Keep the walls as the main focus by using a natural, off-white color like Linen Wash on the ceiling. When painting a room, consider the ceiling within the color scheme to make a big impact on the room’s feel. Ceilings can also be used to make a design statement, whether using coordinating shades or contrasting colors.
What is the most popular ceiling paint color?
White is the most popular ceiling paint color due to its capacity to create the illusion of depth, its ability to reflect light, and its ease of application and repair. Typically, the finish is flat or matte, with semi-gloss or glossier paint serving as visual stops. In contrast, gray provides a tranquil and sophisticated ambience, encompassing a spectrum of tones that ranges from the subtlest to the most profound, with undertones of green and blue.
What is the most common ceiling paint finish?
The majority of ceiling paints possess a flat finish, which conceals irregularities and defects without reflecting light. However, reflective sheens direct the viewer’s attention upward, which can detract from the overall aesthetic of the room. Therefore, it is essential to select a flat finish.
Are white ceilings still in style?
White is a timeless and versatile color that can be used in various interior design styles, including modern and traditional. It serves as a neutral backdrop, allowing for experimentation with bolder colors on walls and furnishings. White paint can conceal minor imperfections, giving the ceiling a smoother appearance. Its aesthetic appeal is achieved by creating a sense of airiness and cleanliness, evoking a sense of tranquility and simplicity, making the living space feel serene and calming.
What color makes ceiling look higher?
Paler walls are better for low ceilinged rooms, but darker colors on the bottom half of a wall can make the ceiling feel taller. This “color blocking” approach adds depth and interest to walls. Wall-framing is a trend that adds decorative elements, frames artwork, and key room elements, such as a sofa, while also adding symmetry. Irene Gunter, founder of Gunter and Co., believes it’s a great way to frame artwork and add a decorative element to a room.
What color ceiling makes a room look bigger?
To make a small room feel larger, use lighter colors like white and cream, pastels, and light neutrals in gray and taupe. A monochromatic color scheme can create a cohesive feel by selecting different shades and textures of a single color. Paint the moulding white on the bottom half of the room, and pull in the same color through flooring, textiles, and accessories for a streamlined look. This will make the room feel less choppy and create a cohesive experience.
Should you paint a ceiling white or the same color as walls?
A single color choice for walls and ceiling is trendier than a white ceiling with bright walls, while light, neutral-painted walls with a white ceiling are more classic. For a classic look, stick to a white ceiling with any paint color. Crown molding is an ideal transition for walls and ceilings painted the same color, creating a dramatic and moody effect in a traditionally appointed room. Switch finishes up with a gloss for the crown and walls or just the decorative crown, but be aware that higher gloss will show any blemishes on the surface.
Is it better to paint the ceiling lighter or darker?
Painting your ceiling a darker color than the walls can create a sense of “grounding” and coziness in rooms with high ceilings. It is generally recommended to avoid a very dark ceiling with light-colored walls, as the contrast can be visually jarring. However, small rooms like powder rooms or small study spaces can be ideal for painting the ceiling darker than the walls, making it the focal point of the room.
When painting a ceiling, it is essential to turn it over to professionals who can patch and repair any issues with sheetrock or tape, prepare the space and paint to avoid splatter and paint lines, and know the best type of paint for your ceiling. They can also provide an estimate for your project. If you need an estimate, please contact your office.
What is the standard color of ceilings?
White or off-white hues are frequently selected for ceilings. When neutral room walls are utilized, painters frequently suggest tinting ceiling paint with approximately one-third of the room’s color to create a unified space and accentuate the walls’ height.
What does a darker ceiling do to a room?
Dark ceilings can visually alter a room’s size, creating an illusion of infinite height or a more intimate environment. This is particularly beneficial for those living in high ceiling spaces. A painted ceiling enhances decorations and adds a sense of luxury. Natural light gives accessories a glowing glow, while reflective décor like chandeliers or lamps adds a luxurious touch. Painting walls and ceilings the same color adds a sophisticated look, while white trims add contrast. Overall, dark ceilings can create a unique and visually appealing space.

I have a dark hallway, with a long closet on left, (facing the end) at the end is a sink, with a door on right to a bathroom…u see the toilet, and then u see the other half is a small standing shower…(above toilet is large window) I want to paint the bathroom blue, then the cabinets blue so they contrast eachother from what little you can see together…I put a huge mirror on the wall opposite the closet and am thinking of medium-ish Grey color… But the cieling… it already feels small…. so do I use a lighter color for cieling? Darker? Same? (Took doors off closet, and want it that way…)
just seen this article today …it is 3 years old and that look is perhaps allready out of style, but I like it anyway. we in germany have popcorn ceiling in every appartment and even popcorn wallpaer …I can t stand it. its that typical german home renovation when you move into a rental. terrible…at least we have solid walls in between the rooms which is better than in america …however I love the interior designs in the usa with the bold colors….lovely
I decided to chk and see if there was any articles on painting your ceilings… I recently purchased a new home and all the walls had been repainted the same color. At first I was ok with this they looked clean and definitely professionally done. Now however I’ve fallen in love with a gray when I repainted my hallway. Yesterday out of nowhere I thought why not paint my TV WALL AND CEILING THIS GRAY AND ACCENT THE WINDOWS AND DOORWAYS WITH THE GRAY AS WELL. NOT KNOWING ANYBODY THAT painted a ceiling any other color than white, I knew if my decision to do so looked bad then IM STUCK WITH IT DUE TO THE PRICE OF PAINT THESE DAYS. IM HAPPY to report it looks AMAZING!! I was worried it would at the very least… Make my room look smaller. I’m happy to say it in no way has! 🙂 The baseboards painted in the gray seemed to actually make the room look bigger. It’s definitely a big room to start with. Oh my accent wall has built in book shelves and a fireplace that I kept the original color but trimmed in the gray. I honestly don’t know why this isn’t something that more people do. Anyway this was the first article I came across that shows painting ceilings… There should be more. I can’t believe the idea never once crossed my mind before. I’m so proud of my decision to take the chance. Happy painting ❤️
Glad I saw this vid! I am planning to expand my room and paint may wall with virgil gray color but I do not want my ceiling to be a plain white. Any suggestion what ceiling color would fit for a gray paint wall? By the way my room is not so big. Just 3×2 meters. Also what tile design should fit as well? Hoping to get some feedback from you! Thank you and have a nice day! 🙂
Thank you! Finally, a designer who appreciates color (and not just greige). Color brings drama, fun, and excitement when done correctly. I want to hire you for a consult. I am going crazy trying to pick color for my home; and I definitely want to strategically put color on the ceilings. I NEED color.
It’s genius how you did all those rooms ! I’m in the middle of a unplanned Reno. The house I bought is old dating back to the war time. The owner before me used my house as a rental so some people use the phrase “snowball effect or another can of worms ” if I had to describe what I’m feeling, I would say “a freaking avalanche and can of worms, no no, let’s say volcano of worms 🤦♀️😂🤦♀️🫣” as he did everything terrible and cut every corner possible and cheap and just asked myself why he did anything S it made things worse IMO ! So anyways think of jack nicholson playing the crazy mental with his hair all frazzled, that’s me on a good day 😂….. first time home owner and first time doing any DIY really but I love being creative and love colours Nd love things too be bold but pretty. I created a beautiful oasis outside and struggling too have a vision in here of the look too create. I thought of painting ceilings and your article I came across has inspired me and given me a vision, the way you explained it, resignated and brought my ADHD so low that I’m not looking around of the avalanche that happened and Intern can’t see where too start and then just don’t. THANK YOU I’m so appreciative to follow your brilliant talents. I’m I love with the teal and the blue one . I thought I was maybe wrong too think the ceiling should be coloured and now you confirmed it,- Bye bye white ceilings, see ya never You da bomb ass boss babe! Here too stay ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Another problem with colored ceilings is if you have the ubiquitous can lights they will pop. Even if you paint their rims the ceiling color. The innards of the can lights cannot be painted and you will have white holes with lights be a feature. So do a test. If you like it then go for it. If you don’t at least you tried it. You might be able to change the color of the canister. But then what if you went white later on? White is the safest ceiling color. Flat finish on a ceiling is a must.
Once upon a time I lived in a apartment with low 7-ft ceilings that were painted bright semi-gloss white and the walls were flat off-white. It was downright claustrophobic! Seriously, it was like the sky was falling — the ceiling was so shiny and noticable. I repainted the ceiling a flat drab white, but left the walls alone. Landlord did not notice that I repainted the ceiling, but he did comment that he thought my apartment looked even tidier than usual. LOL
I prefer the brightest white ceiling I can get regardless of my wall or trim color. Unless of course I was painting everything white, then I could totally see using all the same white for walls and ceilings as long as it’s not a “creamy” or yellowish white. In that case I’m still going with a bright white ceiling
Gosh, I was kind of hoping you would cover if you should paint say a small to medium bathroom ceiling the same color as the walls if you were going with a color. I’m thinking SW Opaline or something like that. You did help me with the rest of the house though. I’m thinking of painting my ceiling the same warm white as the living room and hallway. 🙂
