Are those electrical panels behind the rack? I wouldn’t put anything in front of them. Depending on where you are located, that can be a violation. I’ve done quite a few server room cleanups myself and have been in similar situations. One way of solving this kind of issue is have the patch panel and switch on a wall mount rack above the electrical panels and then getting a shorter rack to house the server equipment.
Not bad clean up…I would suggest you could have first started with upgrading the switches…could have used ubiquiti switches or edgeswitches. Both are rack mount and far better than TP-link. I also didn’t notice you installing any type of firewall…unless you are considering the TP-link VPN router as your FW. Again…move away from TP-link. I would recommend considering either building a pfsense box or purchasing one from Netscape. Firewall, routing, VPN and a whole host of services that are fully customizable and are enterprise grade. Good clean up considering what you started with.
Yes, your job is done, but you made another problem. The electrical panel is blocked. As I can see the rack is not full so you could just buy smaller/shorter one, then it would be better. On several times you said that somebody will has to go and fix something in the next day, or after that. This is not a complete job. Sorry, but this is the true.
8/10. Great work and planning, the labeling is understandable as you’d have to disconnect all the drops that were not labeled and tone/id them at the patch panel. Some better cable management could be used for the structured cabling. A lot of times contractors/vendors won’t have a full arsenal of various length patch cables, so the patch panel placement relative to the switches will also help minimize the building of a rats nest in the future.
Sorry but when I saw your disclaimer “for EDUCATIONAL purpose only” I couldn’t resist… People, the only thing you can learn from it is how NOT to do it. You made a rookie mistake, and that’s why in most places you needs permits to install wiring infrastructures. At least where I live, you can’t put anything less than one meter in front of an electrical panel. Being on wheel or anything is no excuse, if the cabling is permanently attached, it’s part of the building and when it’s part of the building, make sure you know what you are doing because you can get sued anytime, be it by an insurance company or because of a complain from an angry competitor. There was no way that room could handle a full depth server rack and you didn’t even used it as a server rack anyway, you used it as a wiring closet with some shelves. For sure you made a flashy article but it’s in fact a really good example of what nobody should do. PLEASE at least learn from your mistakes and maybe next time hire a consultant just for the structured wiring part, if they know what they are doing they will tell you that there’s no way they can do it in cases like that. When they leave you can then put rack whatever you want in the rack they installed and do the exact same job.
