The tone is set incredibly well in this section of the movie. Anxiety, tension and unease are sown in but not once did you worry about Denzel because he was in control from the jump. Sure he got shot and it might’ve slowed him down for a minute or two but that was it. But the part where the guy that got strung up by that Barbed wire was brutal. Denzel never blinked as he watched that dude choke on his own blood slowly and painfully. If that’s not vicious, idk what is.
This scene had to be inspired by the Greek myth of Theseus vs the Minotaur where the moral is how human intellect trumps bestial brawn with a maze to boot. Nicolai being the overgrown school bully he is, is handicapped by sociopathy and relies solely on brute force and intimidation that dictates his half-assed strategies (or lack thereof), while Mccall outwits him due to superior healthy logic and being a few steps ahead before “nailing” him into a state of helplessness before the fatality.
You couldnt have picked a worse spot to pick a fight with him. A large hardware store with infinite products and weapons around you you’ll never see coming. And people need to realize it’s much darker than they realize in the store than what the movie portrays. So essentially you’re fighting a ghost or a home owner, they know the ins and outs. Denzel is absolutely perfect for this roll. He nailed the balance between compassion for people who were prey and ruthlessness towards the predators. The filming of the fight scenes is also amazing. Denzel was in his late 50s when the first movie was made. With his acting and action skill, and the director’s filming and editing techniques, the fights looked real and raw. I believed Robert was capable of all this and more.

This scene is pretty dumb. He has access to a gun from the first kill but just stands there looking at the dude for a whole minute. Then he tries to take a gun from the second guy he kills and gets shot. The shooter could just step across the aisle and keep shooting but he’s like “nah, he passed the quicktime event”. Then Denz drills some guy in the back of the head who IG just stands there while he chunks thorough the skin and muscle and bone. And then he doesn’t take that guys gun even though he clearly wanted one earlier. Fights mustache for 5 minutes and nobody turns up in all that time.
Rigs a booby trap using barbed wire and bag of cement in less than no time without making any sound. Yup, that’s definitely a thing. Over-the-top stunts and set-ups are fine but you can’t also put them in a excessively realistic setting. The audience suspends their disbelief only as far as the universe you’ve construct will reasonably allow them to. The Equalizer is overly serious and earnest, and that’s fine. But then the protagonist takes out a bunch of highly trained killers because he has ready access to a hardware store and he’s really really smart. I couldn’t watch The Equalizer when it came out and I still can’t. And Denzel was too old for the role. Smart, ruthless, devious and all the rest sure fine I’m 100% on board. A total badass on the battle field though… uuuh no, just no. Remember RED? Every violent scene, and especially the over the tops ones ie. most of them, in that movie was realistic for the skill and ability level of the (aging) character. And it made for a much better viewing experience.

What I like about this scene is it gives us another glimpse into McCall’s past without telling us verbally. Its done through imagery – 1:05 the USMC dress blues, packed with ribbons and the Gunnery Sergeant insignia visible. Earlier in the film when Dave is in a briefing room talking to McCall on the phone about Susan, you see the logo of the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) – so we know he was a DIA operator in his past after the Marines. These little snippets, and given we have seen what McCall can do, we know he’s extremely dangerous and capable but its never really said verbally. Its always shown. If it were a novel you could say its doing “Show, don’t tell” which is the golden rule of good writing!! And every time the question is put to McCall, both in the first film by Teddy before his death, and even at the end of number 2 by the Kid – “Who are you?”……McCall never answers. So he doesn’t TELL us. He SHOWS us through his actions. That’s what I think anyway haha 🙂

This is just my own personal speculation. I think that Pedro Pascal’s character was/is smart for checking and feeling up upon the books. I would’ve done the same thing. I remember there was a saying, “if you wanna hide anything from black people, put it in a book.” If Robert McCall is some big shit assassin/hitman. I would’ve definitely thoroughly checked that bookshelf especially considering the amount of veteran experience and wits of his character and the profession he’s in. I wonder why he didn’t just knock off all the books from the shelf to check for anything strange but I suppose they were doing a recon stealth mission.
