Which External Bodily Component Is The Cleanest?

This blog post explores the concept of the cleanest part of the human body, focusing on the eye. The eye is considered the cleanest part due to its natural antibacterial substance found in tears. To maintain cleanliness, it is essential to bathe or shower at least 3-4 times a week and wash your skin with gentle soap and warm water.

The skin, an organ system, forms a barrier that prevents harmful substances from entering the body. Understanding the cleanest parts of the body allows individuals to prioritize their hygiene practices effectively. The skin, mouth, and intestines each have their own unique cleaning habits.

The back shoulder area is considered the cleanest due to its covered, hairless nature and lack of sweat glands. Armpits, which contain over 80,000 bacteria, are also considered clean. However, some areas of the body don’t need as much cleaning as people think. Researchers tested the “grandmother hypothesis” by cleaning behind the ears, in the belly button, and between the toes in the shower.

Good personal hygiene involves keeping all parts of the external body clean and healthy, which is crucial for maintaining both physical and mental health. The most bacteria buildup is found above the belt buckle, and good personal hygiene involves washing hands, body, and being careful not to cough or sneeze on others. Hands and feet are the most frequently used body parts, and it is important to care about their cleanliness and health.

What parts of your body are self-cleaning?

Other body parts, such as the ears, nose, and eyes, have unique abilities to self-cleanse. The ear wax acts as a barrier against infections, while nose picking can make you conscious or guilty. Eyes, on the other hand, use lacrimal gland tears to lubricate and flush out foreign bodies. The vagina, a muscular tube connecting the cervix to the exterior, is 7-10 cm long and helps in various ways, such as allowing menstrual blood to escape, accommodating the penis during intercourse, allowing sperm passage, and delivering babies. It does not have its own glands, and some discharge from the vagina is normal, influenced by hormones and varying in consistency depending on the menstrual cycle phases.

What body part has the most germs?

The gastrointestinal tract is the primary source of microbes in the body. However, various other areas, including the skin, mouth, lungs, and genitalia, also contain diverse microbial populations.

Which parts of our body need most washing?

It is inadvisable to engage in excessive showering or bathing, as this can be detrimental to one’s health. Medical professionals recommend that individuals limit their cleansing to three areas of the body: the armpits, groin, and feet.

What part of your body cleans?

The kidneys and liver are responsible for detoxification through the secretion or filtration of toxins from the blood into urine. The liver plays a particularly important role in this process, as it is capable of altering the chemical nature of many toxins, making them more susceptible to excretion.

Are there more germs inside or outside?

Researchers led a citizen science project called Wild Life of Our Homes, collecting dust samples from 1200 houses across the continental United States. The project revealed that each home had its own microbial ecosystem, distinct from the microbial ecosystem found outside. Indoor microbial ecosystems were 50% more diverse than outdoors, with a menagerie of fungi and bacteria. Most of the types of bacteria that make a house’s microbial ecosystem unique come from the people and animals who live in the house.

Dogs were found to be the most important factor in a home’s microbial diversity, as they had their own unique microbiomes. Researchers could predict with 92% accuracy whether a dog lived in the house and 83% of the time, whether a cat lived there. Most of these bacteria are bacteria that normally live in pets’ mouths or feces, which may not cause illness but may be useful in the long run. Exposure to dog microbes may actually be beneficial to children, reducing incidences of allergies.

Human inhabitants also contribute their share of bacteria to each house’s microbial community, and researchers can predict the sex of the people living in a house based on the bacteria in its dust. Homes with more men than women tended to have more skin and fecal bacteria in their dust, partly biological. Men’s skin tends to have larger populations of the skin bacteria Corynebacterium, and their bodies naturally tend to shed more bacteria than women’s. On the other hand, homes with more women than men tended to have more Lactobacillus, a genus of bacteria that includes several species that make up the vaginal microbiome.

Are eyes self-cleaning?

Eyes are typically self-cleaning, but in some cases, a person may need to clean them manually. If a chemical or foreign object gets in the eye, it is crucial to flush it out to prevent further damage. Tears typically help clean the eyes every time a person blinks, but tears may not be enough to remove foreign particles or dangerous chemicals quickly. If the injury or irritation is severe, it may be advisable to call emergency services or take the person to the hospital. This article covers when and why to clean eyes, how to do it safely, and first aid for eyes, as well as how to clean artificial eyes.

Do you wash every part of your body?

Laura Purdy, MD, a Miami-based family medicine physician, emphasizes the importance of cleaning all body parts, including hard-to-reach areas like behind ears, between toes, and inside the belly button, when bathing. Washing removes dirt, odor, allergens, dead skin cells, sweat, and natural oils, as well as bacteria, viruses, or fungi that may be present on the skin. The study highlights the need for thorough cleaning of these areas to prevent potential health issues. By following these guidelines, individuals can maintain a healthy and clean skin.

What is the cleanest part of the outside human body?

The palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and scalp are regarded as the most hygienically clean areas of the body due to their constant exposure to air and regular cleansing.

What is the least washed body part?

What is the least washed body part?

A study at George Washington University has found that people often forget to wash their ears, between their toes, and inside their belly button when taking a bath or shower. The study, known as “The Grandmother Hypothesis”, was conducted to test the impact of previous generations’ advice on health and hygiene. The research, led by Keith Crandall, PhD, a professor of biostatistics and bioinformatics at GW, suggests that people don’t wash these three body parts as frequently as the skin on their arms and legs.

This may lead to the presence of different types of bacteria, including some that could negatively affect a person’s health. The findings suggest that people should be more mindful of their hygiene routines and follow the advice of their grandparents, who may have advised them to wash their ears, between their toes, and inside their belly button.

Why wash behind ears?

Why wash behind ears?

The ear is a crucial area for bacteria, as it is where sebaceous glands secrete sebum, a hiding place for bacteria. Therefore, it is essential to wash behind your ears daily and use a warm water-dipped cloth to clean the area. The coronavirus pandemic has increased our awareness of hygiene, including frequent hand washing, mask wearing, and social distancing. However, there are seven body parts that need to be thoroughly cleaned:

  1. Ear: Wash your ears daily, using a clean cloth or using warm water to clean the area.
  2. Ear: Wash your ears with warm water to remove bacteria and promote healthy skin.\n3

Are nose self-cleaning?

The olfactory organ serves as a self-cleaning mechanism, trapping and expelling bacteria and detritus from the external environment, thereby acting as a filtration system between the internal and external realms.

  • Hi Chloé I would like to THANK YOU for giving me so many tips about hygiene. I’m a 55 year old woman and it’s never too late to learn something new. I’m a very clean woman but there was things I wasn’t always doing but did sometimes like washing my body twice. I’m not a proud woman and will hold my hands up and admit things when the occasion arises. We as humans are always learning and should never think because we are of a certain age no one can tell us anything…no, that’s not right. Your a very wise young woman and when I see you taking a shower you always make me want to jump back in and take another one 😊. Thank you again and may The Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones ❤🙏🏼 you are a true inspiration.

  • Thank God I found your website Choe! i”ll turn 19 soon and I am sooooo thankful to you for teaching me a lot of things i never knew! I fell into depression during covid times and when I tell ya about my hygiene..god I was really struggling to even find motivation to get up and clean myself. But after seeing you and your articlees, I’m telling ya, I am soo confident about my body and myself, my hygiene game is leveling up each day. and all thanks to you I’ll never struggle with my hygiene again. You are a blessing to a lot of people like me. LOADS OF LOVE TO YOU! And I hope you always stay happy❣

  • I’m a health science student disclaimer sweat doesn’t stink or makes you smell bad unless you have a medical condition, it’s actually the bacteria present on that specific area that causes bad odour, so when u sweat from the area where bacteria is that’s when u get bad odour, hence it is important to clean your body first thoroughly with antibacterial soap and then go over scented shower wash, personally I don’t recommend using scented ones in your underarms, cleansing properly with antibacterial soap will do the job.

  • I just want to say thank you so much! I was taught growing up to just bathe. And then junior high to shower instead everyday. But no matter what I did, I smelled so bad. Especially after P.E, I was a stink bomb. It was so God dang embarrassing and was such a struggle all the way up until I watched this article. Im 24 and am just realizing this stuff. I couldn’t do perfume because I’m allergic to fragrances and felt so insecure about my body odor. Going to my religious meetings. Odor. Going to work. Odor. Sitting in restaurants with friends. Odor. I would clench my armpits and thighs closed to try and help. I was struggling. One day, last month, I opened up YouTube on my TV and this article showed up. I was like….sure, why not? And as the article played, I was like…huh? Why didn’t I know any of this? Especially working in Healthcare! Then i binged all your stuff. And i thought to myself, I can do some fragrances, so let me give it a try. Because i just can’t. Im personally looking to get in a relationship and i was so self concious on what would happen an hour after i showered and the soap smell disappears and my body odor comes in. And my body odor is BAD. I was in between pay, so i tried 1 thing from Chloe out first and that was to double cleanse. Went upstairs and did my double cleanse. Guys… I work out every day and have a very active job where im sweating ALL the time. Just doing that small change helped BIG TIME!! I got busy and didn’t have time to shower for another 3 days.

  • Girl! Thank you! I was raised by my grandmother and there wasn’t much talking or explaining about how to take care of yourself. I had to figure out a lot of things on my own. I’m in my early 30s and I have an 11 year old daughter and let’s just say pre-teens get funky! So I appreciate you putting me on game to help her out! Keep it up! I’m subscribed for life! ❤

  • The 2 things that have helped the body odor is taking chlorophyll and drinking lots of water. If i fail to do these things I WILL have body odor. Also ingesting red meat, garlic and onions. HTH! I really wish you would’ve been around in my teen year Chloé, thank you for using your platform to help so many❤.

  • Chloe I just want you to personally Thank You as a woman in my late 30’s you have put me down on some real stuff and changed the game. Your tips are the BEST. 2 of my favs is the CeraVe Baby wash for downstairs and rubbing the body oil in with an unscented lotion 💯💯💯. Appreciate the love and attention you put into us as your subscribers. Never change for anyone. Blessings to you and your family always.💓🙏🏾💓

  • love this but if you have sensitive skin, I highly recommend not using a washcloth because personally, as someone w sensitive skin, they make me break out on certain parts of my body. always remember not to apply too much pressure with those cloths. be very gentle bc you can damage your skin by using too much pressure. love this article and i love how thorough you’re being bc you truly never know how thorough ppl know to clean their body.

  • A makeup remover cloth is better and more gentle to use for your face and underarms and thoroughly cleanses you! Then use a washcloth for your private parts and body!! Its a GAME CHANGER! Also always wash every washcloth you use on your body before and after you use it, to make sure to get rid of bacteria and laundry soap which messes up your bodys PH level which causes body odor! The best bar soap to use that doesnt mess up your ph balance, is natural, and thoroughly cleans is Dr. bronners baby unscented soap in the baby blue packaging! Best way to clean your armpits is to use a makeup remover cloth with soap, and wash, rinse and repeat 4-6 times for EACH armpit!

  • Oooo Gosh! perusal any of such article for the first time and amazed at how exactly i cleanse my hair and body two times, parting sections of body and also I wash first with soap and washcloth then repeating with Dove shower gel all over my body. I have always been someone who takes two hours in shower every other day (because i live in temperate zone so we tend to build up more quickly. People always ask me tips to smell so fresh for two days even in summers. Even in my school days I was the tidiest girl without any skin sensitivities or irritation and acne. I assure your tips are 💯 percent worth practicing. More lather more cleansed skin. ❤❤

  • Thank you actually. My mom never taught me how to wash myself properly so this helped me a lot I’m getting emotional writing this right now because I never had anyone to teach me and this is so helpful because I used to get made fun of because of me stanking and I didn’t even know how to properly wash myself while on my period so I would smell like bo and period blood and this as taught me stuff my mom didn’t even teach me. You’re more like a mom than my mom was ever. I’m so glad I got taught this. I am so glad you taught this to me and others you’re so nice have a amazing day!

  • You are seriously changing my hygiene game. It wasn’t that my parents didn’t have much time but my mom was a single parent and she didn’t think she needed to tell us, just like I had to look up how to insert a tampon and such. You are so so helpful like a loving helpful best friend and I absolutely love it!!! ❤

  • Hey Chole 🥰❤ I am so thankful for you honey I’m in my late 30’s and I never knew of these for hygiene care I mean I always wash my have twice and body with soap then body wash but the way you really focus on each part I am going to start to do that tonight!! you’re such a blessing 🥺I love when you post God bless you and your family xo

  • Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior is coming very soon. Please repent and preach the Gospel before it’s too late. God bless you all. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 1 John 5:12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 6:23 NLT “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Matthew 11:15 Whoever has ears, let them hear. Revelation 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose

  • Good tips. One more to add- dry your skin! Make sure you dry those pits before applying deoderant and dry between your toes really well too as well as any other creases, under breasts etc. * I always start with the least dirty working through to the dirtiest and use a new wash cloth every time. You’ve got this!!

  • Im def gonna save this article and subscribe i learned alot just by wathing this one.. I remember one time in my periods i used the only product i had which was scented when i say my vagina completely changed till today im having this inconfort i saw alot of gyns no one found a solution for me so im living with that 😢

  • If you’re teaching a pre-teen girl ) how to bathe properly, here’s some tips coming from a young adult who wishes I was told more: Don’t randomly hand your daughter a razor and say to shave- she doesn’t know how to use it. Show her or tell her how to use it. (Boys have their dads teach them how to shave their face, take the time to teach your daughter how to shave her legs and pits) Swap her old children’s 3 in 1 body wash, shampoo, and conditioner for SEPARATE soaps. (My mom had me using those watermelon kids soaps until I was 14) if you can’t afford brands like dove or Pantene get V05 shampoos, conditioners, and even body washes which come in nice scents and are affordable Like stated in this article, wash EVERYWHERE!!!! Especially when your first hitting puberty, you will smell- a lot. Tell her to lather that soap. She needs to use deodorant after a shower. Give her moisturizer (Nivea is a cheaper brand) I hope this helps, please be gentle about this topic, as it is pretty sensitive, which I know seems silly but for a girl who’s changing, it is required. Build some memories that she will remember and hand down to her daughter when she has one.

  • Im just soooooo happy that someone’s out their posting this kind of article.. something that ive been doing for past one year now coz i got tired of bo. And i thought maybe I’m not doing enough. But when i shared with my mother she behaved as if I’m doing too much. But my god!!!!! I’M SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS article❤❤❤❤❤

  • My go-to.. wash cloth is the SALUX Nylon Japanese Beauty Skin Bath Wash Cloth Towel. I use Dove Care & Protect Antibacterial Moisturizing Soap( 5x a week) and A body scrub (2x a week). When using a scented gel always use Dove Body Wash Deeply Nourishing together. I agree with you about washing the private parts.

  • You absolutely CHANGED MY LIFE I don’t struggle with BO in the winter… But in the summer it’s absolutely horrible and I hate it. I also struggle with depression which makes taking care of myself very hard. I tried your advice and I can confidently say that it improved how I’m feeling, you are amazing, thank you so much!!

  • Omg i love Dove’s cucumber and green tea body wash!! The smell is very refreshing and it gives me the smell of more like apple but very soothing smell and it’s not that strong like actual apple fragrance perfume. Thank you so much for putting this up. I have never taught to use washcloths in my life and I have abnormal hormone and my body’s pores are very fast to build acne if I let my sweat sit for just within a half hour after gym. Thank you!!

  • it sounds ridiculous but I used to think that everytime I showered I had to wash my hair – so I washed myself every 3 days.. or more. i also was never taught how to wash my body, I’d just put some soap on my arms and legs. it wasn’t until I was about 15-16 where I realised I am supposed to wash myself more frequently. i wish my mum would have taught me these things

  • I was severely burned by the sun as a kid and I was taught black ppl don’t need sunscreen (biggest retarded lie ever) now I am different colors all over but once I turned 14 I got a job dog sitting and when I tell you I spent money girl I was using loufas scrubs and soaking in bath water first then showering to using chemical exfoliation basically trying to get rid of years of sun damage it breaks my heart in half bc I went through school getting picked on and my skin is coming along now but my family knew nothing about protecting and treating skin I became depressed for a long time because of it

  • I grew up with an amazing mom but she owned her own business and worked constantly, so this kind of teaching wasn’t something I got growing up really and ever since I found your website about 6 months ago I’ve learned sooo much more about hygiene. The only thing I used to use was the Bath & Body Works Moisturizing Body Wash and only did the once, now I’ve really upped my hygiene game. I still use the same body wash as before, but now I use different soaps while I do it multiple times. Thank you, Chloe!

  • i wanted to say thanks like everyone else! i struggle with my executive functioning skills and showering has always sucked the most, especially since i wasn’t really taught proper hygiene growing up. since i watched a few of ur articles i’ve learned so much about how to properly clean up and i struggle so much less with BO/taking showers bc i finally know what i need to do!!! 🥹

  • lmao, this is the third shower article I’ve watched the first one was like: “try taking cold showers…there is just something about cold showers that make ur skin so glowyyy” the second article: “please shower with lukewarm water! not too hot, not too cold! just right there in the middle” the third (this one): “the hotter the better !!”

  • 🌺🌺🌺 I use a nice quality (luxury) thick pure Cotton washcloth. I suds the washcloth with soap for each portion of my body (because I have hard water which makes the soap dissipate quicker). I Glide the cloth over EVERY part of my body. Scrub the outer creases of your ears and try to scrub on the inside opening with the cloth. I glide the cloth around the surface and labia of my vagina (NEVER put the cloth inside of you!). And I scrub briefly on the surface of the anus and along the butt crease, allowing the cloth to do much of the work.

  • God bless you for teaching people how to bathe. A lot of people, way more than people think, aren’t taught proper hygiene. Some are taught incorrectly, and some are unfortunately not taught at all (yes hi, I literally didn’t know I had to wash my butt crack until I was like 23). And THANK YOU for doing it in a non-judgmental way. ♥

  • New here! you say you have a lotta soaps etc. can you make a article showing how many different ones you got? talking soap, perfumes, lotions etc. cause you be talking and im just looking at all those perfumes girl! Also a super budget friendly “you NEED these” for a broke fan? like these things is the bare minimum you need. or you can call it a “starting out to take care of yourself” kit.

  • I love using Dove Care & Protect Antibacterial Moisturizing Soap. Dove Body Wash For Sensitive Skin, Unscented with a Body Wash & Shower Gel and using SALUX Nylon Japanese Beauty Skin Bath Wash Cloth Towel. NOW Solutions, Sweet Almond Oil, 100% Pure Moisturizing Oil, scented body lotion, and body spray. Double cleansing the body is very important.

  • Far more important than the external cleaning of the human body from head to toe will be the internal cleaning. Not only the waste in your intestines should be removed, but – far more important – all the toxins deposed in your body should be excreted via the liver systematically by taking regularly 1 tablespoon (15 ml) castor oil early in the morning on an empty stomach.

  • Great tips. My hygiene routine is very similar. But for those with sensitive downstairs areas like me i have to get into the shower with swim bottoms on first while i was everything else with my regular soap, i rinse, then i remove and go in for my lady parts cleansing that way no deodorant soaps get i to that area. Hope that helps someone.

  • Chloe I love how you are so open about things and say it just how it is to make sure your sisters are well educated and know!! I’ve never really used a wash cloth, I use a loofah! I’m going to have to pick up some wash clothes I don’t really have any! Any recommendations for good ones? I don’t see any on the store front! ILYSM & God Bless! 🙏🏼⛪️

  • I’m so proud of you ❤ .. you have grown so much over the years. I continue to enjoy your post. Keep loving yourself, and growing in the Lord God. You are a beautiful person inside and out. Stay encouraged, I pray for continuous happiness and peace in your future. Stay prayed up and continue to shine your light. Love you 🥰 ❤…

  • Thank you so much for this article. I am 32 and even though I’m a clean woman it’s never to late to learn more about hygiene. I have noticed when I don’t cleanse my body l long enough honey my personal odor is not pleasant and I be wondering if others can tell ugh I can’t stand that. So from The article I’ve learned to cleanse more than once with a antibacterial soap 2x times and THEN go in with a smell good soap. Also LUME is the best thing on earth

  • Nasty scalp makes me wanna puke! I swear the problem is people go to bed with a wet head or let their hair “air dry” the problem with that is fungal bacteria will thrive in that environment!! I wash my hair every day and I work in a hot factory and every morning as soon as I’m out the tub I dry my hair on cool setting to about 75 percent dry and make sure the scalp is dry and clean.. I get compliments daily on how good my hair smells!! ❤❤❤❤

  • Basic hygiene from the islamic tradition – use water EVERY time you wash your backside. The idea that women and men use…tissue to wash their backside after going to the toilet is absolutely gross. This article teaches you to only use water when in the shower – errrr no. Use water EVERY time you go to the toilet. Basic hygiene.
