Does a black roof raise your electric bill?

Darker roofs absorb more heat, causing increased energy bills and strain on the cooling system. Lighter roofs reduce cooling costs and reduce the burden on the air conditioning system. Black roofs can increase cooling system usage in summer, while lighter-colored roofs reduce summer cooling costs. In winter, darker-colored roofs absorb sun heat, keeping the building warmer. Living in cold climates, homeowners can save more money by keeping their homes warm in winter rather than cooling them during summer. Overall, choosing the right roof color can greatly impact energy efficiency and comfort in your home.

How much hotter does a black roof make your house?

Dark shingles do not significantly increase the attic temperature during hot summer months. A total of 8-10 degrees of attic temperature increase can be observed when comparing white shingles to black shingles. However, the difference is only 2-3 degrees when considering grays, browns, and tans. This increase in attic temperature does not necessarily mean an increase in the house temperature. Inadequate insulation or ventilation in the attic can cause the heat to transfer into the home and trap it.

Therefore, homeowners should base their shingle color choice on what complements their home, not attic temperature. If an attic temperature issue is suspected, it should be addressed by examining insulation and ventilation.

  • I have a QUESTION We just built a one story farmhouse but I’m over white and black. I have chosen SW Canvas Tan and paired it with SW Rock Bottom. We are just about to order this but I’m Still unsure about Rock Bottom. Our home has board and batting across the entire north. Facing home. Your thoughts?

  • Hi I am a big fan of your articles. I have a ranch style house that I painted magnetic grey based on one of your articles. It came out amazing and I am very grateful for your help. My house faces south and the grey appears lighter than the color card. Does your rules for picking off black trim still apply given my house is not white?

  • Love your articles..I want all soffit and fascia all white. Just few window trims will be SW iron ore. My house is facing SE and gets lot of sun. Which white do you suggest? I dont like whites that give off a hue of yellow. I really like white white…I went with SW High hide urethane for my kitchen cabinets.

  • My house faces east, with a covered wraparound porch with railings and pickets. The exterior body of my house is Sherwin, Wiliams, peppercorn. I wanted to Use white dove for the railings and shutters around the windows After seeing your article. Do you think white dove would work for the railings and shutters up against the darker gray peppercorn? My painter wanted to use Sherwin-Williams extra white. Thank you so much for this article. It made so much sense, and I love your choices of white…😊

  • Thank you for your article, my husband & I were really having a hard time picking the color, the reason is that we really wanted our home with white brick, I think is called sandy shore white, & the options the brick place had, did not have what we had vision, so we got antique white brick, & is a farmhouse, thank God it still looks good, but the brick looks off white with pink tones…so that’s why…we’re struggling to pick….our original color plan was to play with white, black & wood tones, but felt a little confused when the brick tone is much more warmer than expected…but we like it…like said, gives a more rustic look,…so I am guessing black fox will be it, since you mentioned it goes with any whites, & also wood tones…you really made it easy for us! Thank you so much, God bless

  • Hi I am in the beginning process of choosing paint colors (black and white) and your article definitely is helping. If I wanted to do the pure white with iron ore and the tricorn black for the door, front steps. Do you recommend? I do want to do my front steps and deck the same color unsure if the tricorn will be tooo dark?

  • Hi!! Love your articles. We are have a difficult decision choosing the white color for our house. We have a black roof ( Tesla solar roof) and we wanted white color for exterior. After perusal your articles, I am thinking about painting our house SW dove white with iron ore trim and Tricorn black for front door. What do you think?
