Hey Ho! for all you kids out there; before the fancy hoists they used a pit, dug in the garage floor, to work on the underbody parts. The pit was just a bit narrower than the common wheel base of cars of the era. The pit was long enough that you could walk down three steps from the shop to the base of the pit. It was, of course, cement walls and floor, IF the shop was high class!
Mechanic wire?? That is good old bailing wire, you cant fathom what a farmer could and did do to fix something with bailing wire!!! My foster grandpa was the Bailing wire King of Mineola Mo, I can remember EVERYTHING he owned had some bailing wire on it. I also can remember while out hunting as a kid, the old hub caps farmers used on the top of fence posts, to keep the top protected from the weather, so, If you find old hubcaps with a nail hole in the center thats what it was probably used for when found.Thats a nicer one these days.We found a 31?,once when Dad was looking for old hit and miss engines, had the vent windows and a rumble seat in it, perfect interior in it, title even, very little rust, guy wanted 3,000 for it back in the 80,s, and for 2 T touring cars, and a AA truck a piece, we found 4 old engines, one a 6 hp Deere just much bigger than the one in article, a 1926 one to!! Wish I would have had the money back then $3,000 grand was a LOT of money with a handicapped child at home then.
Hey Mortske, if you flip the rear tailpipe clamp it should lower the pipe under the rear axle…I bought a wrecked 1929 Ford Town Sedan when I was in high school back in the early seventies…paid one my favorite teachers (his family owned some cherry orhards here in Michigan) $300 for it. Some of my best memories are of my Dad and I repairing it back to roadworthy condition.Yeah, ole Dad and his Old Milwaukee sammiches (he had a whole wall in his basement made out of empty sammich cans)… RIP Dad…I was in a three car wreck with my Model A, an Opel Cadet, and a Ford Maverick Grabber. The old Model A was the only car that could still drive home, the others had to be towed away…gave the car to my oldest son, he sold it years later…was a cool car…

You know what’s possibly the most under appreciated engine ever? Gm 3.8 or 3800 v6. Cheap n plentiful in junkyards. Quite durable. Only problem is adapting to rear wheel drive applications. There’s a guy on YouTube has one I a chevette. Adapted to a 5 speed. He says it’s the cats ass.. would make a model a body go like a house a fire. Lol
I was supposed to inherit my grandfather’s 30 model A coupe. It was fully restored in the 80’s but needed some love in 2001 when he passed away. I wanted it so much but my grandmother was worried I’d cut it up to hotrod it. I’ll probably never get one myself now, but who knows. Awesome article as I’m perusal

You can have 2 different matching hub caps on either side. Put some 90 wt gear oil in these spark plug holes? LOL Saving all these old cars and trucks will be appreciated by many future generations to come. Tinted tempered glass fixed sunroof? Put a Ford or Chevy V6 and a C4 or T350 in it? I have always wanted a Model A Roadster pickup.
P.S. I just purchased one of your sammich coolers, they look pretty sweet. Also, back in the early seventies, my Dad had a Ski Doo Elan, which was so under powered that he cut the flywheel down much smaller, did some carb work, then cut some air intakes in the hood with ducting to direct the airflow to the engine. That little sled would really scream after that…

chop top, swap motor, trans, rear end, lights, wires, gauges, instruments bumpers and more and another original 1930 ford is gone forever. Perhaps there’s enough of them still around that nobody wants, that it won’t matter anyway. fully restored they still don’t make for a good daily drivers. I really would like one, and now I’ve got a retired Marine Corps veteran (a real deal guy) he’s 83, has a 74 square body single cab SM465 with the NP203 4×4, lifted 4″ with 35s on it (I know you like ’em low, but this thing looks GREAT on stilts) he’s got a custom Marine in the grass over in ‘Nam paintjob on the hood with a sweet sunset with a Huey and a row of Marines on the tailgate, custom interior all black, it’s a GOOD looking truck but a mechanic (eh) back in the early 00’s talked him into a built 502 big block with a cam in it, 850 double pumper, the whole nine, totally hacked wiring job, so on and so forth.. yeah, This old Marine enlisted me to clean that truck up mechanically and re-do seats.. some other work, but I’m honored.. anyway ANYWAY I need NEED to add a super scraper to my arsenal. I’m donating my time to get this hero’s truck back in top shape.. oh I guess I’m not going to get an oil can or a timing cover, no coolers left in stock, but that’s ok. Those visible gas pumps like the one installed on this car are worth mega bucks. Your results may vary. Serious side, that is a great platform to build from no matter which direction a person wants to go. The purchase price you mentioned I was expecting rolling parts but that car is a few projects away from a driver. I’m picturing make it sound and call it a survivor. Good purchase Mortske.
That would make a great “Mortske minuet”….the evolution of the automotive lift. As one of the followers has mentioned, back well before lifting, some places dug pits, similar to todays quick lube shops. Before that, (back in the day) i have seen ramps extended off of retaining walls for about 2 to 3 feet of under vehicle clearance for under car repairs. Even predating that? People used block and tackle and lifted them from the front almost vertically for rod and crank repairs……. the more you know.
It sounds like my 235 6 cylinder in my pickup. Let me explain, that engine came out of my 62 Belair. There really good engine, My 62 had a three speed overdrive on the column and every once in a while when I go to shift from 1st to 2nd that’s were it gets jammed up so I would go and move one lever up and put both in neutral position then go again.
I don’t have a favorite hubcap because there are so many cool ones made from the 60’s and back into the 30’s. My favorite wheel cover is a 63 Corvette with the spinner… Holy Crap… I can’t believe how solid that car is, and you got it for $1600. You scored, plus you got extra parts, and of course she spun right over. I like the old style headlights with the blue oval, and the snazzy blue grunt knob on the steering wheel. I was born in 1961, and I still remember seeing the knobs on rigs when I was young. There were a lot of them. Lots of different styles and colors, but I think the most common, and probably the cheapest, was probably the basic knob that was just smooth bare metal… I’ve still got a few of the knobs that I got from my Grandfather quite a few years ago. It’s been years since I looked at them but I think one was red, one was green and another was bare metal. Of course back then most people had the registration for their car in a small plastic envelope that had two springs on it, and you wrapped it around the steering column… I agree, I really like the original blue color too, but then again, my favorite color has been blue since I was a little kid. This car would have looked so cool sitting on the dealers lot when it was brand new… I’m sitting here trying to imagine what it would have been like going to the dealer and buying that car brand new and driving it home. It would have been freakin awesome.
I use to like the early 60s corvette hub caps the guy next door had a 63 split windows coupe with the hub caps that looked like they had the three spoke knock off in the center even though the kno k off didn’t knock off they still looked cool in 1970 he traded in the 63 for a red 70 hard top convertible I gave the car it’s first bath and he payed me $5 bucks that was alot of money for a 9 year old kid in 1970 so I got paid 5 bucks every Saturday for washing his car.
Honestly this car is better than the roadster from Texas. But she needs to be lowered and would be a cool tune up A model. With old school tune up kits and manifolds. I’m sure some purist will be screaming at me but honestly the interest in the original model A has dropped. A simple car and not very hard to fix even for someone with zero knowledge of these older vehicles.
When I was really heavy into car building I look for years for model A’s like that it could never find them at all usually it was either too high or too much rust this one was a nice spine very lucky to find something like this this would make somebody an excellent car keep it simple is what I would want to do just real simple chassis in suspension and a small block in it that’s all you need
1:45:00 I honestly don’t know what I’d do with it. I’d like to have it, but I’m in no position to move on it, and I don’t know what I’d do with it anyway. It’s so old that I’d need to do some major upgrades before I could daily it, yet my disdain for moderninity makes it difficult to plan out those upgrades. 8BA V8 and a 3-speed swap with juice brakes maybe? Even a windsor V8 would be too new for me to be comfortable sliding into this thing. Whatever I put in it, there’d be a manual behind it; I feel the same way about automatics you do about flexy hoses. It’d be a neat piece of history to have but I’m not entirely sure what I’d do with it if I had it. That engine runs way too good to just chuck, though. If I were to 8BA swap it I’d have to either find a use for that engine or find a number matching fella to sell it too. You are right on the money that it isn’t all that powerful and would not be a particularly useful engine in 2024 traffic. If it made, say, 60 or 70hp it would probably be fine to leave right in there, but it was only good for about 40 and has surely lost a few since. These are supposedly capable of 60mph or so flat out; my 71 C10 cruises there comfortably. Gas mileage is about right though; they were known to get 8-12mpg when they were new.
Embossed. decorated with a design that stands out in relief. ’34 is embossed but I guess its stamped into the cap as opposed to embossed “stands out” in relief like ’35 ford caps? That word ’embossed’ bugs me coz I always considered it meant like your interpretation here. But I was going to discover late in life it’s a bung concept of the word. Still, the hubcap thing was enough to make up for any American lingo’ ! I was interested again then.

Check this thing out, he just got a 49 Cadillac grille plus 49 rear quarter panels by contacts the cold war motors-dude had. its a late 40s chev pichup on a 53 gm-chassis, mild topchop, some sectioning, fr, dudr is talented, the nomad tailgate would conttibute big-time.. Bro is all into old school bodywork and kkustomizing. Plus tail lights and brake ones not sure at all!
Please for the love of God – not another hot rod mod. Too many already. You even already have a running gear from one thats done – seems like thats all I see online these days are torn out running gears with no bodies to go with them. I’d say do a nice budget rebuild with what is there. Simple resto – nothing crazy. Super easy to put together – easy body work, paint, upholstery, no cutting – no welding – just putting it back and enjoying life in the slow lane for a change! Wham bam – done.
My favorite hubcaps is Cragar or American racing but I love that little car. The little flathead is cute, but I would want to put a 351 Cleveland in it. We had one in our 70 Mach 1 back in the ’70s and that car would go fast but then I want every car to be a daily driver to have fun in and drive to the store go to work run errands. I know if I was a car I wouldn’t be happy unless I got to do stuff move around de seen all the time

Thank you for a two hours spent perusal your rescue revival of such a cool 30 Ford two door coupe. This has the makings of a beautiful restore. That is what I would do if I had the money for it and the car. Yes,, a modern small V-8 and modern proper sized tires to fill those large fenders. Oh and yes modern brakes on it. Not a chop job though. After restoring from bumper to rear bumper. A nice stereo and comfortable seats. A nice factory color Black paint or whatever was available in 1930? I would keep it as original in looks as possible and simple and low key but lower the ride hight to improve the handling, drivability. Like I said,, If I had the money and owned it. Saw your struggle with the fan belt… Back in the day, a guy would keep one of the wife’s old nylon stockings (a used up one with runners) in the trunk for emergency fan belt replacement. Pull it tight and tie a square knot (right over left, then left over right)… Good enough to get you home.
