As the calendar flips to November, it is time to start decorating for Christmas, as Halloween is officially over by November 1. When choosing the ideal dates for outdoor Christmas decorations, it is important to consider regional practices and strike a balance between early holiday cheer and long-lasting holiday cheer. Etsy’s in-house trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson offers a comprehensive outdoor Christmas decorating guide for new homeowners, long-term renters, and anyone just getting started with creating outdoor Christmas light displays.
To start decorating, begin by placing lights, decor, extension cords, and accessories in each location you plan to use them. Twelfth Night is Jan 5, so it’s best to start early in the day as soon as it warms up. Starting about mid-October and decorating through November, with a goal of being done by Thanksgiving, is the best time to start.
To adorn your home with festive decorations at a gradual pace, Johnson suggests starting with solid staples and then switching out accessories. Turn on your lights a little earlier, but not before November 15th. If you haven’t decorated your roof before, start with a traditional white LED look. Dec. 1 was the most common response, but most people plan to begin earlier, in early to mid-November. This guide provides helpful tips on choosing and maintaining outdoor Christmas decorations.

Yes to wreaths on the barn around the lights, yes to big bright old-fashioned Christmas lights, yes to cardinals in the trees on the porch, and yes to putting Christmas displays together naturally using what you gave on hand. Love seeing you and Benjamin working together and perusal his developing vlogger skills! It melts my heart to see the beautiful life you and Aaron are building for your babies. 💗
Also have to say, once my children got older, I just wasn’t really excited to go all out on decorations. However, I have a little grand baby now and he is almost two. Must say, he is bringing the little kid in me out again lol. Getting excited all over again! Hahaha. Next year he’ll be even more fun as he will be even more aware. Can’t wait!
Laura, I would think that investing in having those matching wrought iron handrails for the other porch would be a historical gift to the house. Having a local artist make them to match will create one of those stories that stay with the house and make it very special. I think it would look gorgeous and give your house that continuity on both porches and would look stunning. We have tried to add to the beauty of our home by giving it extra special touches and the matching railings would be so classy and a lasting addition to the home. Merry Christmas. 🥰
Laura, thank you so much for opening a whole new world of Christmas delight for me! Decorating doesn’t come naturally to me. In fact, I used to dread holiday decorating, but you have shown me so many ways to use natural things from my garden and items I already have that I’m now excited about creating new arrangements, and I’m even thinking about making some to give to others. Thank you so much for your continued inspiration throughout the entire year! May you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and a blessed year!
Hi Laura and family, you did great with this area I love it, makes me want to go and get 2 small trees and put them in my containers up in the front yard, makes my heart melt when Benjamin right there helping you reminds me of my kids helping me for Christmas when they were his age. Can’t wait to see everything when you and Aaron are done, you all make it magical. Have a great rest of the day.
Absolutely leave the Cardinals on the branches!!! I love it! I’m not usually a fan of colored lights but I love those big bulbs!!! Takes me back to my grandparents house growing up when my grandfather would start decorating in October to have everything ready for Christmas. You could see their house from the interstate and the made the front page of the Atlanta Journal. People from all over would come and see their light display.
I can so identify with the way you decorate; just go through what you have and decide how you might use it. I can get so intimidated with the blogs that have a whole theme planned and everything all lined up to go, because I just can’t think like that. I love how you just naturally put it all together and it just evolves. Happy surprises! Your son is so cute and eager to help. You are definitely getting him trained right! Love your articles!
Love the small trees just heading to local yacht club that Iam a member to do planters with fresh greens from trees on the property a perfect day about 48 degrees or 9 degree s celcius in southern ontario at bottom of Lake Huron great view as working on the planters today .You give me inspiration every day wanting to be in the garden or planning for garden now working on plans for all my siblings gardens and the Sarnia yatcht club been a member for 21 years and not a lot of changes on that property for the last 48 years till new walkways around the basin hoping can convince to plant more perennials other than hostas in the next few years to add more colour we will see but you given me a direction in my life since I lost my husband early last year thank you gardening makes me smile Now ! 😀😍
Laura Benjamin is just the kindest smartest sweetest young man did I do believe that I have seen. You have certainly raised quite the gentlemen and handyman is definitely his mother’s and father son, precious is what he is😊 you are truly so blessed. We enjoy your content but we certainly enjoy your family more it’s such a joy to watch your family grow and your children grow up before I arrived thank you for allowing us to see that💙💜 Laura I was thinking the colored lights were traditional when we were going up and you are carry that tradition giving this to your children and perusal Benjamin he certainly enjoyed the lights so I think it was rather sweet perusal him get a kick out of the colored lights himself. It was just so sweet perusal him he is such a darling.
It looks so good. I love the simple red-on-green look by the door. I’ve noticed the older I get the more I’m actually starting to like the large Christmas lights. I wasn’t a huge fan in years past but those are reminiscent of the large old vintage lights my grandparents had when I was a kid and I’m starting to love them again.
Loving your new approach to decorating outside, it’s so much less stressful for sure! Seeing Benjamin helping you and “being you” while holding the camera is just so presious! LOVE the idea using the cut trees in pots, that’s so cool, do you have to water it at all? I sure admire you and all that you do to help us in the gardening community!
This may have saved my decor! My 60″ tomato cage trees keep falling over in the wind and I did use landscape staples to lock them in, but as winter blows in, they have blown out of the planters. I am going to buy some sticks/posts to put in the center and see if that will help anchor them until they freeze into place…Love everything, but the porch planters with the mix of evergreens and foraging for things in your own garden…love and aspirational for me! Thank you.
I finally started decorating today by putting up my vintage aluminum Pom-Pom tree. Having chronic pain issues I just slowly take my time, go through my boxes, and then decide how much stuff do I really want to end up having to put away later lol. I’ve pared down my decorating a lot, and love seeing a home all decked out.
Hehe I think Benjamin needs more side articles. He is always soooooo cute in the articles and Laura you’re responses to him are always so well said. I would have been more worried about my son breaking the carolers then letting him just be himself and help me decorate. I know we don’t see the behind the scenes every day stuff and there are the harsher side of parenting mements, but I just want to encourage you to keep up the calm, enjoying my kids vibe that you give off in these articles. You’re a great Momma!
Love those old lights! But there’s probably like ONE bulb burnt out in the non-working one & you have to go through one by one to test, which is a pain, lol! But once you find the burnt out one & replace it with a new bulb, it should work for ya! And yes, put wreaths or some type of pine-y fluff around the barn lights, that will be so cute!
It all looks so good! I can’t believe how strong you are, being able to lift the trees and pop them in like that. I agree with Donna: some websites are very intimidating with how everything is just perfect. I’ve never done perfect. Benjamin is so funny. He was really struggling with his carolers and getting out of the door, but he never gave up! So funny.
I vote for wreaths around the barn lights. I love the way the stained glass window on the porch goes with the whole theme seemingly without effort. You guys are so amazing, you inspire us all. Love and joy to all the Garden Answer family. P. S I think we should have a nighttime shot of the tree in the Hartley all the season because I just love it. Thanks Lynn
Love the cardinals, they add such a sweetness to the decorations. The bird on the magnolia pillow looks like a female rose breasted grosbeak bird. The other pillow has a black topped chickadee. I love the birds added to your decorations! I’ve used bird ornaments for years on my Christmas tree. It adds such a beautiful simplicity and sweetness to it.❤
Hi Laura! Those trees look so pretty all lit up! I wish you would have shown the deer, too, but I’m sure we’ll see them later. Benjamin was so cute when he had the camera and explained what he was doing. Of course, he’s always cute! I really like the cardinals on the twigs. Thank you so much for sharing!
You could switch the pillows. The Chickadee pillow already has red. Put the beige Peace pillow there and the red pillow with the beige bird. Also, I used to stress about having everything done a good time before Christmas because I always took it down the day after. Now If it’s done later, it just stays up longer. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff. Another productive day for you Laura. It’s extremely motivating! I’m off to haul brush to get some “butterfly garden trees” to make a colorful scene surrounding my Grinch and Max! 🎄
I am loving your decorating this year. You have inspired me and helped me see what is around me and what I could do with it. People need to go back to the days when you made the decorations and not just plug in a blow up ‘decoration’. BENJAMIN is so adorable. You are so blessed to have each other. Perfect pair. BTW girls are more likey to drive ya lil cray cray lol.
Hi! I know this is an old article, but I just wanted to comment anyway and tell you how wonderful everything looks! I’d love to know more about the lighted branches that you have in the pots on the porch – the ones that you took the fall leaves off of when you decorated for winter. They are the perfect way to add height to the arrangements. I love them!
I bought some natural coir mats during Spring clearance at Hobby Lobby, and got some stencils and custom spray painted them with black Flex Seal as the paint. It worked so well, I used the rest of the can to repaint an old, discolored rubber mat I had to look like fresh cast iron. I would never have thought to use Flex Seal but got the tip off of youtube from Ginger Chick Rehab.
Hey guys! Can Aaron pretty please do a article on any tips and tricks he has for Christmas lights (stringing them on trees and bushes, untangling them, storing them, etc.) We do a fairly big display and every year I feel like I’ve never done Christmas lights before in my life, lol, it’s just not easy/fun work on a big scale. Thanks guys! Can’t wait for the whole tour 🎄☺️
I notice your beautiful hydrangea that still has all their spent blooms which is such a nice winter interest. My landscaper just came this week and pruned all my hydrangeas with a hedge trimmer. I thought I was going to die (okay a bit of an exaggeration) but I was sick when I saw that and it was too late. And I had a very specific discussion that his guys should NOT touch the hydrangea. Did he sacrifice my blooms? I am not sure what they all are but I believe some are macrophilia. And he pruned a hydrangea standard.
I actually really like the pots with the birds. In a way, it matches your efforts to leave plants that allow the birds to forage from. Benjamin’s little voice saying ‘they look cute’ as he set the decor pieces on the table…adorable to see him getting more and more involved along side you. Such a fun age!
absolutely love the trees with big vintage lights…and that Hawaiin inspired Christmas twang made my heart smile. Your centerpiece is perfect for the space and may I suggest adding either rocks or sandbox sand to the base to keep the trees from blowing over in the wind. We live in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and I have to weight everything down. Laura, glad to hear that you are simplifying your style. I’m sure it’s a result of adding another child to the family. It happens to all of us.
One of the things I’ve liked about this week’s articles is how you use what you have and what you forage from your own garden to make your house look festive. I love how you add charm little by little without stress. OMG, Benjamin is such a great helper, can’t wait to see Samantha Grace tagging along too. Thank you for your ideas and inspiration.
how cute and Benjamin does great camera/voiceover work!! he’ll be doing his own articles soon!! love the simplicity of the trees and even the casual planning… i think having kids does that to you sometimes: you just kinda go with the flow because you have lots of interruptions! whatever gets done, gets done- whatever doesn’t? it all still looks fantastic and no one is the wiser ❤ and now i think i need to put lights in the lemon cypress we have at the gate, duh… will have hubby get on that this weekend!! see? inspiration from you every day! 🙂 ❤ thanks for the article!! 🙂 ❤
Good morning! Everything is so festive around your house. Wreaths on the barn would look good but it’s not necessary. I think they should be around the lights instead of over the lights but you will need big ones. I love the porch decorations, so inviting and a great place for coffee or hot chocolate! Looking forward to seeing the garden and house Christmas tour, you and Aaron do such a beautiful job decorating everything.
💚💜Benjamin your adorable! Time stamp 3:29 his hand on his hip so cute😊. The deer are perfect!! Wreaths on barn will look nice. I think that bird on the pillow with the magnolia is a song bird or just a finch. Them trees are very pretty exspeacily the pots you made up with cardinals and that berry wreath omy just gorgeous .You do such a great job on your house!! Have a fun day!! 🎅🤶🧑🎄👼🐈🐈❤🐦🐦🐦🐦🐦😊
Benjamin makes every article more fun. When he brought out the broom, my heart swelled. You know, there are a lot of sweet little boys – and many of us have one of our own, even if they are all grown up – but there’s something extra special about your little Benjamin. He’s a real treasure and I’m grateful that you allow him to appear so naturally and frequently in your articles. ~ Lisa
I noticed that your wonderful light master Aaron only got a kudos on the deer. However, when everything is done please film it and the drone also. Last year’s was amazing. This year will be so different with all the major changes. I know we all look forward to the grand finales. Thank you for sharing with us your beautiful family and home gardens.
I would love to see gaslight lamps lining your driveway. I think they come in a solar set up, easily moveable and how about decorating each of those with wreaths at Christmas time! Lining your driveway may keep trash truck and others from driving over the lawn. I think old fashioned gaslight lamps would go beautifully with your home.
WHY HAVE I NOT THOUGHT ABOUT THIS!!! I’ve always had a real Christmas tree and we always went and cut them down with the boys. When my youngest son got married his wife was allergic to real Christmas trees and also our grandkids, so I went to artificial 😔 I HAVE NEVER in the 30+ years I’ve been celebrating Christmas thought about putting a real Christmas tree outside 🎄 THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!!! THANK YOU!!!! 😊
Wreath, yes and those red plaid ribbons…or are you going to use red wreaths. LOL Never thought about a red wreath, . Love the cardinals ❣️😊 Doesn’t God make beautiful things❣️ And Laura, you have a gift of showcasing all things beautiful and Aaron has a gift with lights, too. Benjamin is following in your footsteps👍😁😊❣️❤️💕🥰. A Thomas Kincaid Moment or a Norman Rockwell Picture
Oh Benjamin…. you are a NATURAL!!! Soon you will be doing the articles and Mom & Dan will be perusal you!!! I’ve noticed that since having Samantha Grace, Laura seems to be “not sweating the small stuff” and just enjoying things in a much less complicated style….. funny how kids make you realize what important and what’s not so important…… plus they really wear ya out!!! 😳😅
every thing looks great but you might want to rethink the door garland. It needs something shorter or longer or just above the door only. Just my opinion. Such great ideas you have. I love your containers and who would of thought to get live Christmas trees and put them in pots. Great for people who don’t have pines growing in their landscape. You are so innovated!
Such a sweet article. Your little helpers (Russell and Benjamin) are adorable. The trees turned out so darn cute. I love the Cardinals on the branches as well. Very organic and totally pretty creations. Nice job. Thanks for explaining why no fine garland on the pathway to the door, I was wondering. Your home is just fantastic. To you and your beautiful family—a very Merry Christmas and I wish good health, happiness and prosperity for you and those you love in the coming year and beyond.
I got the biggest chuckle perusal Benjamin in the background determined to opening the door with his hands full holding those “dolls.” His personality is really coming out I noticed. Love how you gave him practical reasons why those “inside” dolls wouldn’t work outside instead of chastising him. Good work. I love the “live action” in your articles…as if I was there with you all, standing with a cup of hot chocolate in my gloved hands and wearing a very warm hat, coat and shoes/boots! Ho Ho Ho
Crystal, your front porch looks so beautiful!!! ❤ 🌲 I love everything you’ve done, and I think you should add the doe so the deer family will be complete! 😊 You are my favorite YouTuber, you never disappoint. Your decorating talents are just perfectly fabulous, and I love everything you decorate! ❤ Thank you for always being so awesome and for sharing your gorgeous new home with us! 😊🌲❤️🌲 Congratulations on 120K!!! You have worked so hard and have definitely earned it, sweet girl ❤
You should get the doe to complete the family. The esthetic is better in groups of odd numbers. Perhaps get some large, white cup hooks to hang your garland. You’ve already hung it this year but when you take it down you can replace the nails with the large cup hooks and be ready for next year. Everything looks beautiful! 🎄💝
Ooohhh, Crystal! It looks sooo pretty!!!! Why am I kind of emotional seeing you decorating your new front porch for Christmas for the 1st time!? 🥹 It looks so beautiful! I love the view at dark! Ps. I think you should go get the doe to complete your sweet little deer family! Thanks for sharing, much love to you and yours!
Hi Crystal! Give you lots of credit for going out there in the cold! We got that cold snap here but today it was around 48 and so I went out and decorated my front porch. We are supposed to get a rainy cold day tomorrow with possible snow so I think I got it done just in time! I’ve had no luck with outdoor command hooks. I think it’s just too cold in the midwest and they don’t stick. Beautiful job on the planter you made! We have a local store that offers that too so maybe next year I will do it! I think it would be fun. I usually buy their basic green outdoor tree and then decorate it myself…LOL
I really love the idea of birch logs in that planter with the picks! That would look so cute with my rustic cabin vibe I am doing. ❄️ I have heard that 3M Command hooks sometimes need 24 hours to attach to the surface with nothing on and then they will be strong enough to hold items. ❄️ So cute and cozy how the front porch looks!
Your porch looks so pretty Crystal! Love that you added lights to the garland and the small trees. Also, I am loving the pops of red and I especially love your deer. You know better than me but I think if you could add the other deer it would be great. I am crazy over deer but of course you can look outside and see deer anytime. It is so beautiful in the evening when you can see the outside lights but you can see the Christmas tree lights too! 😊🎄❤🦌🔔
As a fairly new subscriber, I’ve EnJOYed your website so much! Your sweet voice is very calming to me!! I’m in Love with your Christmas Series; your Porch is Stunning! Congratulations to your Milestone & your 1st Christmas in your New Home ❤️ Since you might know something about warm thick cozy socks, could you be so kind to recommend any🤗
Love the Christmas porch decorations. I wish I knew the solution other than command hooks or nails for hanging garland. I have tried command hooks many times. I have prepped the area with rubbing alcohol, I have waited over 24 hours, I have bought heavy duty command hooks, and more. Nothing works. I live in Washington state now & I think it must be too cold for command hooks to work. It was 26 degrees this morning.
Crystal your front porch looks beautiful! I love it all! It’s gorgeous at night with all the lights! You did an amazing job! You are a wonderful decorator! I love your style and really enjoy your decorating articles. You are my favorite 💖 You create beautiful articles that inspire and bring so much joy. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous home with us. I wish you the most wonderful Christmas 🎄❤️ I love your new deer! They are beautiful! I would get the Doe, it would make a sweet little family☺️ Have a wonderful day 🤗💖✨
Hi, Crystal, I would get the doe! You may want it next year when it likely will not be available. I’m glad you added lights to the garland. The dark green garland just kind of faded into the black door trim without the lights on. Everything looks great! I know you must be enjoying decorating this new house for the first time so very much!!❤️🎄❤️🎄❤️🎄❤️
If you put the command hooks up while the weather outside is still warm, they will adhere to the siding or molding. They eventually will fall off, but it’ll be several months before that happens. Just an FYI for future reference. FIGO hooks are another possibility. I use a different brand which are EXCELLENT but I couldn’t find them. They are all sold on Amazon. Where did you buy the seat cushions for your rocking chairs? I have two red chairs on my front porch that could use some. Buy the doe.
Hack for hanging garlands that are heavy put command hook and put super glue if you’re planning to put garland every year so it’s easy to put it next year and so on. Or other holidays. That’s what we did we put heavy garland from Costco over our Garage stucco arch wall. Your home is so beautiful!!!! No matter what holidays is. 😊😊😊😊😊
Looks amazing Crystal! You whole house is just so beautiful. I too have so many things from years past that I just can’t give up and have to incorporate into my yearly X-Mas decor. Even tho they are showing signs of aging they are still wanted and needed. That’s the way we should look at humans too right? LOL! Enjoy your decorating this year and make sure to live in the moments. Do all the things, but enjoy all the doing and the things. Especially beautiful never to see again moments with family.
Your house is absolutely beautiful Tara. Everything looks so cozy and warm. I love this time of year. I’m finally done with mine I have to put some ribbon on some things and get my old sled out and put it on my porch to finish it off. I cant wait until all of your stuff is done and you do your home tour. Merry Christmas!
You need a bit more lights, I think. And as for the buck and fawn I think you may want to get the Doe, even if you don’t put all 3 out at once. but you may want the 3 of them. The red blanket that you draped over one of the chairs where did you find it? It didn’t come from Aldis did it? I want one but today looked at the store we shop at, but they didn’t have any weather or not they haven’t yet come in or maybe are all sold out.
Just a suggestion for your deer. I live in NY state on Lake Erie, we get very high winds. The stakes that came with them did not hold up . I purchased some very sturdy tent stakes at Walmart, they work great, they are longer and bigger around. They have orange hooks at the top so I was a little hesitant, but they don’t even show pushed down into the ground.
Hi Crystal. First of all Congratulations on reaching another milestone. Thats wonderful. Your porch looks so pretty. I love all the trees and the sleigh. The pot you made is so pretty. The reindeer are so cute. I love perusal you decorate. You are very creative. Thanks for bringing us along. Take Care. God Bless.
Wondered where you live with snow already on the ground. Finding out SD. While I miss seeing a snowy white Christmas out my window from when we lived in ND, we followed hubby & his job to CA & I don’t miss the shoveling ❄☃️🌨. But thank you for my being able to reminisce with your great decor, especially the sled❤. We use our kids old wooden sled too. Beautiful job.🥰
I watch you all the time…And I think you are a wonderful wonderful mother..I would like to commit please..I feel the balance of your porch is off balance wise..everything is lined up on the one wall and only one on the other side and I feel the height is off on the one tree side of the wall based on the height of the other side…just a different thought…your home is beautiful and I love all of your trees….
