When Determining The Opening Of Interior Doors?

To measure the size of a door, multiply its width by 2 inches and add 2 inches for height. The rough opening size varies depending on the type of door, with standard sizes being 2″ (51 mm) for width and 2 ½” (64 mm) for height. For an interior door, use a tape measure, pencil, and paper.

To measure door height, measure the inside of the vertical sides. For the rough opening, remove the interior moulding surrounding the old door and pry it away from the door jamb with a wide, flat pry bar. This will reveal the door’s rough opening. When learning to measure for a door replacement, measure the thickness of your door slab and the jamb’s thickness from end to end, excluding the architrave or architrave.

To measure the door opening, start by measuring the opening height on both sides, considering any future flooring, such as parquet or tiles that may not be installed yet. Record the average height and then measure the width of the opening at the top, middle, and bottom points. Calculate the average width.

The most important part is the thickness of the wall or door opening depth, measured at three points: top, middle, and bottom. Measure door width by taking three measurements from inside the door frame, starting at the top corner and measuring across. Round each number up to the nearest inch to determine the nominal door size you’ll need. Measure the height on both corner edges of the opening, using the smaller of these two measurements. Subtract 3″ from this height to get the nominal door size.

To get an accurate measurement, multiply the door’s width by 2 inches and add 2″. For the height, simply add 2 1/2″. If you have a door with a lower height, measure the height from the bottom to the top of the sill on both sides and write down the smallest of those two measurements.

There are two charts showing approximate openings for doors: one for exterior doors and the other for interior doors.
