Home Improvement, a popular sitcom that aired for seven seasons, ended on May 25, 1999, with the last of a three-episode finale. The show was viewed by an average of eight million viewers during its run. Patricia Richardson, who starred alongside Tim Allen in the series, revealed the real reason the show was cancelled after eight successful seasons. Richardson and Allen starred as husband and wife Tim, and the comedy series could have gone on for at least one more season. However, Richardson wanted the show to continue, but she had wanted the pay disparity between her and co-star Tim Allen.
Jill, who played the role of Jill, was touched that Tim turned Morgan down because of her job offer. When Morgan tried to guilt Jill into getting Tim to reconsider, Jill was offended and decided to transport the entire house to Indiana via tugboat. The series ended after eight seasons in 1999, with Richardson being offered $25 million to do a ninth season and Allen being offered $50 million.
The series was still pulling in strong numbers when it ended, with Allen and Richardson being offered huge paydays to commit to another series. In the first episode of Season 7, Tim announced plans to leave Tool Time and have Al take over, which seemed like the natural order of things. Patricia Richardson, who played matriarch Jill on the sitcom, gave the network an ultimatum after pay disparity between co-star Tim Allen. She said Allen refused to do a show without her and rejected a pitch to continue Home Improvement with the Jill character getting killed.
In the three-part finale that ended with the Taylors relocating to Indiana for Jill to pursue a new job, emotions and feelings were heightened.
