What Shade Of Trim Goes With The Alabaster Exterior?

Alabaster is a versatile color that can be used as both a trim and wall color for a clean and minimalistic look. It is recommended to use a satin or semi-gloss finish for the trim, which will give a softer white look. For those who prefer a softer white for their trim color, Alabaster may be a good choice.

Alabaster can be used as a trim color, but if you want to pick a trim paint with some contrast to this particular shade, consider Sherwin Williams Extra White, Benjamin Moore Super White, or Benjamin. The light reflective value (LRV) of Alabaster by Sherwin Williams is 82, making it a good choice for those who prefer a softer white.

Alabaster looks good with SW Extra White trim, SW High Reflective White, and SW White Snow trim. Other paint colors that pair well with Alabaster include Urbane Bronze (SW 7048), brownish gray Peppercorn (SW 7674), dark gray Evergreen Fog, and greenish. Pure white and Alabaster also work well together, and Alabaster can be used in exterior trim paired with Interesting Aqua on the body.

Alabaster harmonizes particularly well with contrasting dark colors used on the roof, front door, trim, and/or shutters. However, it should not be mixed with a crisp true white trim paint in a room that receives intense warm sunlight. Alabaster walls can be paired with brighter white trim, such as earthy green, lake blue, or red clay dirt, as long as it is pulled from nature to fit the style.

What color should my exterior trim be?

To create a harmonious trim for your home, choose a slightly lighter or darker color that is at least two steps away from the primary color. Avoid using colors too close in value, as this can lead to a lack of contrast. For low contrast, use a color that stands out enough to highlight the details of your home.

To contrast the trim, use a light or dark neutral, such as white, off-white, beige, brown, gray, or black. It’s essential to find a color that harmonizes with your house’s body color, even if you choose a neutral one. For example, a creamy light gold trim will blend with a deep golden tan or an off-white toned down with yellow.

Additionally, some painters suggest adding 10-20 of your body color into a white base to create the trim paint, but this is not recommended as it’s difficult to mix up the same color a second time. Instead, have the paint store adapt the color to ensure a formula they can recreate if needed.

Can alabaster be used outdoors?

Alabaster, a soft stone, is ideal for carving intricate forms but not suitable for outdoor work due to its solubility in water. Its smooth, polished surface can become rough, dull, and whiter when washed with dishwashing liquid, losing its translucency and lustre. Finer alabaster is used mainly for ornamental purposes, particularly in ecclesiastical decoration and staircase rails. Alabaster is mined and sold in blocks to alabaster workshops, where they are cut to the required size and processed in various techniques.

To reduce translucency and create an opacity resembling true marble, statues are immersed in water and heated gradually to boiling point. This operation requires careful regulation to prevent the stone from acquiring a dead-white, chalky appearance. If properly treated, alabaster closely resembles true marble and is known as “marmo di Castellina”.

  • Well this is timely. Our builder just had our new house painted…I chose Alabaster. It’s reading a little more yellow than I thought but furnishings aren’t in yet. I think I’ll like it with my white cabinets & cream, brown & taupes color scheme. I plan on adding a feature wall in SW Smokehouse….maybe. Thanks for cracking the code😉

  • All my trim and ceilings are alabaster (semi gloss/flat). I am repainting my whole house have been agonizing over paint colors for each room. I just watched your super helpful article on choosing one color to start and only deviate when compelled. That seems like such a relief. Do you have suggestions for an off white that would differentiate from the trim but still be a light neutral not gray or beige. I saw you mention white duck? That is on my list as well as Shoji white. Thanks!

  • I’m using Alabaster on the exterior of my house, with Urbane Bronze as the trim color, and Dorian Gray for the shutters. My house faces north and much of it is in shade all day long. I think the warmer aspect of Alabaster will do well in the shade. I’ve learned a lot from your articles. Keep ’em coming! 🙂

  • I’d love to see a article on SW Origami White. I looked at many SW off-whites as I’m having a house built with lots of North and South facing 2-story windows and I’m just not sure how to satisfy the look of the paint from both directions. I haven’t even broke ground so I can’t even use sample ls yet. I chose OW because it seemed neutral enough without being warm or cool. And I have to use SW for the builder. Thanks.

  • Well the Sherwin Williams plant in Bedford Heights Ohio is currently on strike for 2 months now. The company cant afford to give us a cost of living raise. We were working 12 hours a day 6 days a week, meanwhile they are building a 300 million dollar new headquarters in Downtown Cleveland Ohio. But they cant afford to pay us

  • I love alabaster so I painted my bathroom cabinets and now I hate my wall color haha. I did alabaster cabinets and agreeable gray on the walls for my laundry room and we love that but I want to do something different for the bathroom. Do you have something else you prefer over City Loft? Kinda wanna move away from the grays. Some thing like a warm white maybe?

  • I love all of your articles very informative. Thank you! I just hired someone to paint my whole house with Alabaster. I’ve been perusal a lot of paint articles now I’m not sure if i made the right decision? 🤔 i can’t return it, so i have to go through with it. What other color of paint should i pair with alabaster and trim?

  • I have Alabaster (flat) throughout my new build house including baseboards. In my south facing master bedroom, I have a charcoal color fabric bed frame, black dressers & nightstands and and I’m considering black drapes. Should I paint an accent wall behind the headboard, if so what color please? Black drapes?? Thank you

  • My house is painted in BM Chantilly Lace. I think it is the whitest white that resembles a white primer or white piece of office paper. IDK if that comes across like that on this article. Knowing what I have it doesn’t look the same. Wanted to share with others looking for a true white. No gray and no warmth. White as office copy paper.

  • I ordered kitchen cabinets from a local cabinet maker. Of the colors they had available in white I chose what they listed as SW Serenity (Maple Serenity). When I told the designer I would want to paint the trim & interior doors in that same Serenity color (open concept) she gave me a small cabinet sample & said take it to any paint store & they could match it. Well it seems that Sherwin Williams no longer makes this kitchen cabinet color. The closest color I could find was their Alabaster. And that’s just going off a peel & stick sample. Is there anyone who can tell me if the Alabaster is the same as their old color Serenity? Where can I find this out?

  • Are there any warm white paint colors Jacob recommends for dark rooms/homes that are poorly lit and have a lot of warm colors (dark walnut cabinets, brown countertops, dark flooring)? I’ve binge watched dozens of his articles reviewing different white, off-white, cream, etc. colors and every one he says they won’t work in poorly lit environment. 🙁
