Is Balmuda a Japanese brand?

Balmuda K. K., also known as BALMUDA, is a Japanese design and manufacturing company that produces small appliances and computer accessories. The company was founded in Tokyo in 2003 by Gen Terao, a high-school dropout who pursued a music career before starting Balmuda as a product design company. The company’s first product was the Floater, an aluminum laptop stand that Macworld praised for its unique design and production process.

After nearly going bankrupt during the late-2000s recession, the company launched the GreenFan in 2010, designed to eliminate strong air currents from traditional bladed fan designs. Terao claims that the idea for the fan came from watching children linking arms and trying to run in a circle. The story of Balmuda’s development of the GreenFan product was later adapted for television in the NHK drama Hanbun, Aoi.

What can you cook in a Balmuda?

The Balmuda toaster, priced at $300, is a one-trick-pony that is designed to heat, brown, and crisp bread products such as toast, pastries, and pizzas. With a 600 cubic inch capacity, it is roomy enough to hold two slices of bread and has three temperature-specific heating modes (350°F to 450°F). The toaster’s effectiveness depends on the user’s bank account and willingness to part with a significant amount of money.

The Balmuda transforms rock-hard bread into perfect toast and returns days-old croissants and stale pizza slices to their original greatness. The secret to this process is steam. Water is poured into a slot on the top of the oven, which is then heated to a boil at the beginning of the toast cycle. The steam softens the bread’s exterior before boiling off completely, while the top and bottom oven elements cycle on and off to gently heat the bread inside and out without overcooking the exterior. In the last 30 seconds, the elements heat up continuously to brown and crisp the toast.

In summary, the Balmuda toaster is a high-cost, one-trick-pony that is designed to heat, brown, and crisp bread products, making it a valuable tool for home bakers and baking instructors.

A toaster is an electric appliance that uses radiant heat to brown sliced bread into toast, resulting in the color caused by the Maillard reaction. It consists of slots for inserting bread and heating elements, often made of nichrome wire, to generate heat and toast the bread to the desired level of crispiness. In a pop-up or automatic toaster, a single vertical piece of bread is dropped into a slot, and a lever is pressed to lower the bread into the toaster and activate the heating elements. The toasting cycle is adjustable via a lever, knob, or pushbuttons, and when the cycle is complete, the toaster turns off and the toast pops up out of the slots.
