What Matters In Kitchen Design?

Kitchen space planning is crucial for a successful kitchen design that meets all expectations. Proper kitchen planning involves assessing all needs, traffic flow, cooking styles, and who will be using the kitchen. The first step when designing your kitchen is to collect images, jot down ideas, and stay clear of corners. Emphasis should be placed on focal points to create a beautiful, comfortable, functional, and efficient layout. In summary, proper kitchen planning is key to unlocking enhanced functionality, heightened efficiency, and captivating aesthetics within the culinary space. By following these ten steps, you can create a kitchen layout that meets your needs and reflects your style.

What makes a kitchen modern in design?

Modern kitchen designs emphasize the philosophy of less is more, focusing on cleanliness and simplicity over decorative ornate elements. The level of minimalism in the design can vary, with some opting for ultra-modern minimalism and others softening it with accents. For a contemporary look, consider replacing floral patterns with bold colors, vibrant countertops, stainless steel appliances, and brushed nickel or chrome finishes.

For a minimalist kitchen, focus on geometry, specifically triangles, rectangles, and angles, to create crisp and sharp lines. However, if you prefer decorative pieces, consider incorporating these elements into your design.

What is the rule number 1 in the kitchen?

Kitchen hygiene is crucial for maintaining cleanliness and prevents the spread of bacteria. Regular handwashing is essential for both adults and children, and it’s crucial to teach the entire family how to properly wash their hands. Other hand hygiene tips include avoiding wearing rings, keeping nails short, and not wearing nail polish. If a cut is made, clean it immediately and apply a plaster. Additionally, it’s important to tie back long hair when making dishes, as it can carry germs. Professionals often wear hats and hairnets to protect themselves from germs. Overall, proper kitchen hygiene is essential for maintaining a healthy and hygienic environment.

What is the best layout for a kitchen?

An L-shaped kitchen layout is a popular choice due to its maximized cabinetry storage and the introduction of the kitchen triangle. Designer Daniella Villamil loves this layout for its functionality, clean working circle, and versatility in design choices. It can be customized to suit individual needs and preferences, whether it’s a small kitchen or a large open-plan space. The L-shaped design allows for easy movement around the kitchen, making it an ideal choice for any kitchen.

How to decide on a kitchen layout?

The work triangle is a crucial aspect of a kitchen layout, ensuring efficient flow of work during preparation, cleaning, or storage. Single-wall kitchens, where cabinets and appliances are fixed along one wall, are space-saving and ideal for apartments or small homes. The work triangle is a work line, so work stations must be carefully spaced and vertically stacked. Galley kitchens, with two parallel walls and a walk-through, are cost-effective and ideal for small, narrow kitchens. However, work station placement should be careful as galley kitchens can become crowded. Understanding these factors is essential for successful kitchen renovations.

  • Very helpful information, thank you for taking the time. I was wondering what would be more practical for under cabinet drawers – 3/ 10″ deep drawers or a 12″, 10″, 8″ column of drawers? We are putting drawers mainly and choosing to just lose that corner, as I think there will be more space in a drawer than any pullout or turntable. I am worried that I might not have enough space for my pots and pans though. Is 10″ depth enough for these items?

  • Thank you for your information. I am a new watcher and am in the concept phase of our house. Designing to be wheel chair accessible (currently not in wheel chairs). We went to an appliance shop 3 months ago and roughly sorted out what we wanted, wall oven etc. We will plan to be doing a lot of home preserving (jams, pickles, frozen veg), I grew up with that. Memories of all the family around the table peeling, cutting, packing bottles. Keep on providing quality information. Thanks from Australia.

  • For lunches sandwiches are overrated! They require so much prep slicing bread, cheese, veggies and meat. They fall apart and get soggy over time. Just bake quiche. You can prep one in 5 minutes. Bake in oven for about 25 minutes. Let it cool and slice it like pizza. Quiche is easy to pack in plastic boxes. It’s great cold. You don’t even have to store quiche in the fridge, just leave it on the counter with a tablecloth over it.

  • Darn, I missed the livestream, but you did a great job! That would be nerve-wracking to me; I was having flashbacks to high school speech class for you! LOL 🤣😂🤣 Was hoping to see some of the projects you’ve worked on over the years, but maybe some other time… One little thing that might help for future livestreams: Not sure if it was me, my phone, or your guy’s microphone(s), but I couldn’t hear most of what Amy was saying, so I didn’t know what question she was posing to you, so when you answered, I didn’t know what you were answering, lol! 😆 I kinda figured them out eventually, but would’ve been better to hear her. Not sure if she had a microphone, but if you don’t have two, maybe if you could just repeat the question before answering that would work, too! Great job though, guys! Much better than I would’ve done for sure!!

  • Missed the live. :/ I agree w/designing the kitchen then the house. We designed our house and never thought of what we wanted the kitchen to be like. Now that we are putting in a new kitchen I’m realizing the way it was designed/size/location doesn’t work. We are moving appliances and I am very limited to where we can move them to. I do cook (don’t really like to), bake and want to have people over. So we’re finally putting in an island. It will be used for gatherings, preparing foods, homework, breakfast and such. More info below on the island. With this design, I have thought about what I don’t like and what I want. I hate lazy susans, so I’m going with a corner pull out. I actually had to move the refrigerator just because I wanted the pull out more. I don’t really like the new fridge location, so I may play with it to see if I move some things around if I can get the fridge moved back and still keep the pull out. Many years ago we wanted the cooktop/range in the island and a prep sink. I am no longer doing the cooktop in the island and I am undecided about the prep sink. I’m also looking forward to my pull out spice drawer, pull out trash can and a pot and pan drawer. I agree with adding 20% to the order. I told my hubby 10%, but he said we’ll need more as friends of his did 10% and it wasn’t enough. My biggest issue is my island. I have looked at countless islands on Pinterest and there are so many different styles. How does one ultimately decide what the overall island will look like?
