Automotive designers and engineers use trim and molding details in vehicles to enhance body lines, create finished edges to panels, and enhance functionality in high-use areas. Rubber, plastic, and vinyl parts often enhance body lines, create finished edges to panels, and enhance functionality in high-use areas. Once a vehicle is clean and dried, it is essential to protect the trim pieces with a quality rubber, vinyl, and plastic protectant to prevent future UV degradation, which is the primary cause of fading and discoloration of black plastic trim on vehicles.
The most common form of plastic degradation, or fading, is caused by UV exposure. UV light breaks down the polymer bonds within the plastic, causing a slow fading process. The fading or chalking seen is caused by the plastic drying out over time. When UV rays are absorbed by plastic, the UV rays break down the polymer bonds, causing a slow fading process.
To prevent fading and restore plastic trim, it is crucial to use top treatments such as 303 Plastic Protectant and Microfiber Cloth Scratch Marks Remover. Over time, with exposure to the sun and inclement weather, these black plastic trim components will fade, oxidize, and lose their original appearance. To address this issue, try using an APC with a brush and be careful not to scratch the surrounding paint.
Exterior plastic trims are the most at risk due to exposure to damaging elements such as rain, road sand, grime, bird droppings, salt, and more. The surface breaks down from UV exposure and oxidation, while the solvents in the plastic leach out, leading to fading and discoloration.

W-D 40 will not hurt the paint, in fact it is a great tar remover. I always hand wash my Tesla but when I do take my truck to the car wash, I spray down all the tar, tree sap and grease on the truck right before I go through the car wash and it really works great. It gets maybe 90% of the stuff off the truck.
Nice article as usual buddy. I never take my MYP to a car wash, but I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the black trim you are talking about were peeling in a couple of areas about the driver’s window. Tesla came and replaced the whole top trim. While the technician was here, he checked the passenger side and noticed it was beginning to peel by the right side view mirror. He came back a week later and replaced the entire top trim on the right side. They come in one big piece. My MYP is a late 2021 model and I was surprised that the trim is powder coated. Keep up the great work 👍
