Pocket doors are interior doors that roll in and out of a nearby wall, providing privacy and soundproofing while sliding invisibly away when not needed. They typically have a total thickness of 58 mm for both single and double pocket doors. The standard door width for interior doors is 32 inches, with a 2-foot 8-inch-wide door being the minimum recommended width for a passage door.
There are two kits available for pocket door installation: the Standard Kit for doors up to 4’0″ x 8’0″ and the Ultimate Kit for doors up to 5’0″ x 10’0″. A pocket door frame with heavy-duty hardware can support 1 3/4-inch-thick solid-hardwood doors weighing up to 175 pounds. If you choose Johnson Hardware’s version of hardware for installing a pocket door, the minimum wall thickness is 4–1/2″.
The pocket door system can usually be installed on a plastered wall with a thickness of 107/125 mm for hinged doors. The internal passage (IP) 3-1/2″ stud work plus 5/8″ drywall on each side gives a finished wall thickness of 4-3/4″ 5-1/2″ stud work plus 5/8″ drywall on each side.
The Pocket Door Kit XL Joinery Pocket Door Kit is available for £239.99. The unique design allows doors between 35mm-45mm thick to be installed with a finished wall of 125 mm. The thickness of the assembly is the same as the wall studs (normally 3 1/2″), allowing drywall to be hung continuously on the pocket door assembly.
