What Size Is An Outside Door’S Jamb?

The standard size of a door jamb is crucial for ensuring a secure and proper fit for doors. It typically measures 4 9/16 inches wide by 9 9/16 inches tall, which fits most residential doors. However, these measurements can vary depending on wall thickness and the type of door.

A door jamb is a part of the frame that surrounds the door slab and may include two-side jambs and a one-head jamb. Jambs may feature a stop, a strike plate, and hinges. To ensure compatibility when replacing doors, it is essential to measure the door frame to where the drywall starts, known as the casing. This is the measurement of the size trim you will put around the door.

Door jambs must cover the entire thickness of the wall where the door will be placed. The first step to choosing the proper jamb width is to determine the thickness of the wall. Typical door jamb sizes are 4 9/16″ for 2×4 frame with ½” drywall, 5 1/2″ for 2×4 frame with stucco or thick drywall, 6 9/16″ for 2×6 frame, or block wall.

The thin part of the jamb is 3/4 inches, while the larger part is 1-1/4″. The inset for the door is 2-3/16″ wide. As the depth of the jamb increases, the thick part becomes more significant.

For new construction, standard exterior door jambs are 6-9/16″ wide. Older openings, sheds, or uninsulated buildings are commonly 4-9/16″. Standard door jamb sizes for door jambs include 4 9/16-inches for 2×4 frames with 1/2-inch drywall, 5 1/2″ for 2×4 frames with stucco or thick drywall, and 6 9/16″ for 2×6 frames.
