  • Dear John Katoras : No synonym is totally (100%) replaceable. Actually very few of them are. On top of the meaning per se,you have to consider collocations for example. There will always be a reason why you prefer one word over the other such as localisms, age of the speaker, formal vs informal or semiformal, business or colloquiall, trends, countries, emphasis etc etc…. In other words there is not such thing as SYNONYMS . There are approximations but no more than that!!. Thank you for your list Club James Studios.

  • SALVAGE verb 1. rescue (a wrecked or disabled ship or its cargo) from loss at sea. Similar: rescue save recover retrieve raise reclaim get back restore reinstate 2. (IN THE PHILIPPINES) apprehend and execute (a suspected criminal) without trial. “those who are salvaged simply disappear from their homes or workplaces” It’s derived from a Filipino word “salbahe” meaning ‘bad” or “bad person”… so a “salvage victim” is meant as “murder victim” “Salbahe” is the opposite of “salba” or “to save” in Filipino terms. And “Salbahe” is just coincidentally near identical to the word “Salvage” when pronounced though having opposite definition of “save a wreckage” and with “murder of someone”

  • I once asked a teacher of Spanish if there was a thesaurus for Spanish. She said there probably wasn’t, apparently because there were not nearly so many synonyms in Spanish I find that remarkable, and worth researching. And yet, with that whole truckload of synonyms, once in a while, English fails to provide a word with exactly the meaning I want.

  • Thank you James! ❤️ It’s helpful to learn the pronunciation and to remember the meaning. A very good orientation. There are a few words new for me, I hope it will help me to learn them when I hear them again. I’m not sure if my sentences here are all right. Please correct me if necessary! 🙏 Best wishes from Berlin!

  • Learn or giggle it. I just put “word” + syn/ synonym in search ? And various sources like Thesaurus.com, Miriam Webster, Synonym.com, etc give us what their data base holds? Of course, my “book museum” contains a dog eared but cherished, copy of Roget’s Thesaurus which I bot way back in 1970! Not saying anything negative about the authors of this article. From the replies, I gather that many are benefiting from perusal the article. Thanks for uploading.
