The 2023 XC60 Ultimate model from Volvo has “Interior High Level Illumination”, which is a non-flickering lighting addition that allows for more natural color expression beyond what is achievable with LEDs in the automotive industry. This feature delivers low light reflection and a high color index, expressing natural colors as they are seen in nature. The interior lighting can be customized with LEDs and can be retroactively installed on a R-Type.
The EX30 top-of-the-line interior illumination with indirect lighting of decor panels adds a sophisticated ambience inside the vehicle. The passenger compartment is equipped with various types of lighting, including general interior lighting, adjustable decor illumination, and reading lights. The “high level” also includes additional lights in the Plus pack (2022 example): Mid Level and High Level.
The interior lighting can be adjusted with a thumbwheel in the instrument panel, and certain light functions can also be adjusted via the center display. The thumbwheel on the instrument panel, located to the left of the steering wheel, is used to adjust the brightness of the display lighting, controls, and ambient decor.
Volvo describes it as “several LEDs that provide faint lighting in various colors”. These LEDs are only located on the dash above the glovebox. The “Interior High Level Illumination” feature is available in the Inscription model and can be retroactively installed on a R-Type.

Volvo XC90 Night Lighting Review: Exploring Exterior & Interior Illumination #VolvoXC90 #carlighting #AutoReview …
I just got my Volvo and was playing with this setting expecting the lights around the cabin to change color. Nope just these dinky little lights change. Pretty disappointed. My 2017 Ford truck lets you change the actual lights and it has a way better effect. Another thing I noticed is the auto high beam headlights aren’t nearly as good as my ford or a 2013 dodge I had. For a 2022 Volvo I’m surprised.
Thank you. This was a much better explained article than another one I’ve seen on here. I think you’ve seen them too which is why you made that comment at the end. LoL! Volvo are truly producing some very attractive vehicles lately. The ambient lighting is the only thing letting them down as far as aesthetics goes. Hopefully they rectify this soon and produce ambient lighting across their range that can rival the likes of Mercedes or even better them.
Mike, you da Man. You are one of the very few ‘tubers that do night time reviews. They are excellent. Considering the amount of time many of us spend in our cars at night these reports are so important. Thank you. I am sure the manufactures turn on your YouTube when designing their lighting systems. Yours are very informative and your knowledge is amazing. Thank you, YOU are making night time driving safer.
Well done mate. I got mine last week and I am still struggling to find a setup that pleases me. And I am surprised (not positive…) to learn that they have even downgraded the ambient lighting obviously on the 2024 models. 🙁 I do not have lights on the front under the dashboard, which looks very nice in yours. Sad that they do not offer at least 2-3 light colors for the ambient light. Even my old W221 from 2012 had 3 options… 🤷♀
