Mod Podge is a glue, sealer, and finish that’s really popular in craft projects, and we use it a lot here at JenniferMaker. But what …

Why is it called mod?

The term “mod” originates from the 1950s term “modernist”, which was used to describe modern jazz musicians and fans. Modernists were young, style-conscious British jazz fans who wore sharp Italian clothes. This term should not be confused with modernism in literature, art, design, and architecture. From the mid-to-late 1960s, the term was used to describe anything popular, fashionable, or modern.

Mods were a pluralist subculture that was prone to continuous reinvention throughout its original era. The term was an umbrella term that covered several distinct sub-scenes. The mod scene started as a “mysterious semi-secret world”, with mods focusing on clothes and shoes tailored to their style.

Mods were initially a small group of English working-class young men who emerged during the modern jazz boom of the late 1950s. They watched French and Italian art films and read Italian magazines to find style ideas. They usually held semi-skilled manual jobs or low-grade white-collar positions, creating a parody of the consumer society they lived in.

Mods created a parody of the consumer society they lived in and by around 1963, the mod subculture had accumulated identifying symbols such as scooters, amphetamine pills, and R and B music. The term “mod” covered various styles, including Swinging London, but was defined by George Melly’s group.

Mods were influenced by the Jewish upper-working or middle-class of London’s East End and suburbs. Simon Frith argued that the mod subculture had its roots in the 1950s beatnik coffee bar culture, catering to art school students in the radical Bohemian scene. Steve Sparks, one of the original mods, agreed that before commercialization, mod was an extension of the beatnik culture and had connections to modern jazz, Sartre, and existentialism. Sparks argued that mod has been misunderstood as a working-class, scooter-riding precursor of skinheads.

Why is a mod called a mod?

The Mod subculture originated in the late 1950s in London, where young Londoners called themselves “Modernists” due to their love for Modern Jazz and the streamlined style of African-American musicians. By the early 1960s, a new generation shortened the name to “Mods”, and their musical preferences changed, with Modern Jazz being replaced by other genres like American rhythm and blues, soul, and Jamaican bluebeat. Mod boys aimed to outpace the moneyed classes by wearing sharp, tailored suits resembling those worn in Italy or France, while their hairstyles mirrored European trends.

Girls were also drawn to the subculture early on, attracted by the energetic music and focus on style. They wore clean lines in matching tops and skirts or fitted dresses, favoring hemlines at or above the knee. Mod girls gravitated to Mary Quant’s boutique Bazaar in Chelsea and Barbara Hulanicki’s Biba in Kensington. Carnaby Street in London’s West End became the preferred shopping district for male Mods, while Mod girls gravitated to local, female designers like Mary Quant and Barbara Hulanicki.

  • Thanks for all the work you put into all of your projects. It can be overwhelming at times when trying to make something, and your step by step directions are so helpful. On top of that, you provide all the projects and designs free of charge. That can be extremely helpful because crafting can get a bit pricey. I think everyone that watches, appreciates all you do for us.

  • WOW! Awesome article Jennifer great to know about the diffident Mod Podge’s I have sure learn something today! Thank you so much for the great info and tips!!! Your a Beautiful lady and care for the craft community helping us all to be better crafters you are so kind! Appreciate you so much for that you do!!!! God Bless Hugs Liz..

  • Came back from an ad to where you were sniffing the glue, but unbeknownst to me, it was paused. I was staring at you steady inhaling the glue and wondered what was happening! haha Was glad when I realized you weren’t and it was just my pause. I pressed the space bar and released you from glue prison! 😂

  • I am going to be covering a pleather purse with a design that I printed out on regular printer paper 😂 The only solution I’ve thought of is mod podge but I’m torn on what kind to use. I want it to be as waterproof as possible so that the design won’t be damaged in the rain. Do you think Mod Podge will do a decent job or would you recommend something else? If mod podge.. what kind? Fabric? Dishwasher safe? 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • I want to gold leaf a trophy I have that came with a tacky gold finish. I want the right mod podge to use as the adhesive and know what one I should use to give it a solid seal that won’t allow the gold leaf to scratch off or peel and allow me to wipe it down to keep it clean. Will the Matte adhesive and Satin finish work together? Not looking for a high gloss finish. Gold is naturally not shiny. It’s kind of dull when it isn’t polished. What do you recommend?

  • Jennifer thank for another remarkable and fantastical series of articles!! You really are a great crafter, teacher and have such wonderful and amazing crafts that you share!! Thank you!! I have an interesting phenomena happening – when I play this article on Apple TV youtube app the sound track is out of sync and seems to be different to what Jennifer is saying. On my laptop though sound and article are just fine.

  • You have been incredibly informative. Thank you. I wondered about Mod Podge. I was trying a project where you use the standard MP on paper and take a paper napkin layer one with a picture. MP the paper then add the napkin and add another layer of MP. I did get bubbles and wrinkles in the napkin layer and when the paper with the napkin on top dried, there was wrinkles. I thought I would have a smooth finish but not.

  • Hi! Youre amazing for doing this! I have a few questions. What is the difference between sealing and finishing? Why do you recommend doing two coats? Is that for all materials or only some? I painted 1″ wooden circles with acrylic paint for a tic tac toe game and covered them with gloss mod podge to make them soft and shiny. What is curing and how long should I wait before I use them? Thank you!

  • You are an amazing woman to give so much help to us crafters. I have a question. I’m thinking about making paper journals. Which one of these would you recommend that offers flexibility and can be painted over without cracking and being stressed with lots of movement. And again, thank you so much for all your incites and tips to help us all become better master crafters. ❤

  • I am working on a wood project that I’ll paint part of it & napkin mod podge the other part. Question is, should I paint first & then mod podge? There are some narrow/tight areas the napkin mod podge combo would be used so that’ll be tricky enough. I definately appreciated this article and the information you relayed. Thank you!

  • I’ve watched your articles on the different sublimation blanks, wood, etc. I have a couple coasters that are ceramic with cork on the bottom, but they’re not made for sublimation. I painted them white then coated them with gloss mod podge. I would love to sublimate on them, but afraid to ruin them. Could you please do a article on using mod podge for sublimation? Thank you!!

  • Thank you, Jennifer, for taking the time to explain all this. The first time I decided to try Modge-Podge I bought it at the Dollar Tree store. I got it home and tried to use it on a project. When I opened it, it was a yellowish color. I wasn’t sure I should use it like that. I set it aside and bought some at Walmart. I never did return the first one. I have now been using it for about 4 years now. LOL I still have that first one and never used it. I love the precise and easy way you explain things.

  • 2:13am. If I used mod podge Matt to decoupage a napkin onto a rope bowl, can I use a product called Draw Tite over it to seal it from dampness and how long should I wait before I do that? I glued the napkin on to the rope bowl and let it dry. Then I put mod podge on top. The next day someone told me that I needed to seal the mod podge. If I don’t use Draw Tite, what would you suggest?

  • I’m in my fifties and I’ve never used mod podge until tonight and I really appreciated some of the things that you did and showed especially when you were showing the plexiglass and the different formulas I also thought The glow-in-the-dark and the backlight were cool I think that would be great for a summer party or a nighttime party at somebody’s house because you could paint a couple of things and put it out there and they would either glow in the dark but but you would know you could just wash them off easily at another time very cool

  • hello, I’m making my children’s names on mdf board, I’ve given it an acrylic coat base paint. Can I use mod podge to transfer printed names onto the board? I have an ink jet printer and if this text print transfer could work on the mdf board, it would save me a lot of time vs. Stenciling or sketching the names by hand and then painting over 😅

  • Thank you for your article… I’m looking to put a fabric patch incased in epoxy but when I did the first time it changed color and made it all black. So it’s a fabric that I need to waterproof so it doesn’t absorb the water… which mod pod ge would you suggest I need to to dry clear and not affect the color of patch… thanks

  • I’ve been painting acrylic designs on glass wine bottles, I need something that is an indoor/outdoor sealer to keep the paint from peeling & chipping, It’s hard to find a sealer for glass, I’ve tried Aleene, Rustoleum, & Krylon just to name a few, could I use modge Podge instead ? And…if I primed or colored the bottle with oil based or enamel paint and then painted an acrylic design would modge podge protect it?

  • For console hold down both LT/L2 and RT/R2 and then: – press up and down on keypad to raise or lower objects – press the left or right arrows on keypad to size up or down objects And also whilst moving an object you can press LT/L2 to change if you want objects on the tiles, on the half tiles or to move completely freely -your welcome

  • I REALLY struggle to build in the sims 4. Sure there’s more freedom for movement but there’s less STUFF to fill it with and it still feels really restrained and to be honest I’ve kinda given up trying to build a new house and will just edit pre-existing ones at this point. Guess Newcrest is never getting filled.

  • This was one of the funniest articles I’ve seen in a while. The way your voice has a shaky quality to it (“oH my goD”, “ooOoH”, “that’s a scHolng”) is comedy gold in on itself. Also the tips are great as well. I did everything beside the lights and the cabinets so I’ll definitely add that to my game too, thank you!

  • Free rotation can be achieved on consoles by holding both shoulder buttons (not the triggers) and moving the right analog stick left, or right. Resizing furniture can be achieved by holding both triggers and pressing LEFT or RIGHT on the directional pad, with left making the obeject smaller and right making the object larger. Neither of these require BB.Moveobjects, but the command prompt for such a task can be achieved by pressing both shoulders and triggers in tandem (at once) which will bring up the window. Causing objects to float or “levitate” does require BB.MoveObjects and can be done in the same manner as resizing the object, but instead of using left and right, the directional keys are UP and DOWN for obvious purposes. Have fun, console simmers!

  • These are great tips for those who prioritise form over function, but I usually find when I download a house like this from the Gallery that it hasn’t been playtested in the slightest and there are routing issues all over the place. I prefer my terrible basic houses if it means I can actually play the game (well, I don’t actually, because I play The Sims 2, but whatever).

  • If your a console user and want to know how to move items like she did but don’t know how here! Up and down Hold both L2 and R2 and use the d-pad and press right to size up and left to size down Place wherever you want Use the left > d-pad botton to switch over to halph tile placement and then free place Move items up Hold L2 and R2 and press/hold the up and Down d-pad bottons to move up and down

  • “By the end of the article you will feel inspired” Me : I feel so called out rn, why did you have to mention the plants T-T Also me after perusal the article : Spending 5-7 hours daily building random houses and stuff so I don’t go back to just buying houses ;-; I miss minecraft but I’m stuck in this hole-

  • Gotta say, as an artist The only thing that I disagree with is the color scheme section Color theory is a lot more complex than people tend to think Complimentary colors are usually ones to avoid, since they actually clash more often than not. But if you’re not making both colors super saturated, or you are just going for that clashy funky vibe, then use them lol. Analogous colors, however, like purple and blue actually DO match. If you’re just going for a basic color scheme, stick with colors that are right next to each other on the color wheel Blue and purple is actually my go-to lol

  • Is it possible to alter the light color and brightness in build mode? I know how to do it in live mode, but it would be a big help for certain builds if I can do it while building (like for the giant gothic castle I’m building, because I want it to be kind of dark and shadowy, and being able to alter the brightness of certain rooms before I move my family in would be really convenient).

  • I like small ugly almost empty houses with the cheapest furnitures and make my sims look poor, then master all their skills and reached the top of their career. Even with enough money to buy a better house, for some reason I kept my cheap house and furnitures . The only thing I do to make my sims comfy is upgrading parts of my cheap furnitures. XD

  • i made a teen room and it went out pretty well and for the beginners of building you gotta like fit your vibe and on the way making it add some things that you would think a teen sim would like computers might be one of them or homework if they like to be smart and just act as if you where those sims and how they would react to it hope you liked my tip your welcome!

  • You actually can do all the scaling and free placing on console too. The cheats work the same way. Then just use L2+R2 and press right/left arrow for making an object smaller or bigger. Press Up or Down on the arrow pad to lift or lower your objects. Press L2 so you can switch from grid to free placing. Have fun console players 🙂

  • 1:04 For all my fellow console users (XBOX to be specific): To make objects bigger or smaller: – Hold down LT and RT – Press right or left on the d-pad Make objects move up/down: – Hold LT and RT – Press up or down on the d-pad To enable free placement: – Choose an object – Press LT until something pops up on the upper part of your screen saying “free placement enabled” < (You may have to do that each time you choose a different object, btw) Cycle through swatches: - Choose object - Press "X" until you land on desired colors Hope that helps <3

  • All this and I still can’t put a damn coffee maker anywhere but a counter! (She says, filled with rage with a 4-cup coffee make on her dresser irl.) EDIT: Nvm, a mod from 6 years ago still works lol. Love how I have to mod the crap out of this game to make it bearable. 2ND EDIT: Wait-am I the only person who builds closets like they are in real life…?
