Hollow core doors are a type of door structure that is lightweight and easy to install. They are made from thin wood or cardboard and have a honeycomb structure to add strength and prevent collapsing. The skins on a flat door surface are typically plywood or hardboard, while raised panel doors may use fiberglass or plastic. They are cheaper to make and have less material, making them easier to lift, move, and install. However, they lack security from forced entry due to their lightweight construction.

Hollow core doors are not as effective in preventing fire spread, blocking sound, or feeling as substantial or durable as solid core doors. Additionally, each raised panel hollow core door requires an expensive mold, making it difficult to choose from a variety of configurations. Overall, hollow core doors offer a cost-effective alternative to solid core doors.

What are panel fasteners?

Automotive panel fasteners are crucial in body shops as they secure body panels to the frame and each other, requiring proper installation to ensure integrity. To remove old fasteners, use a handheld tool to insert the tool’s forked end under the head of the old fastener and gently pry it loose. This technique works for most common plastic fasteners, but may require more work for older or modified ones. When selecting automotive panel fasteners, consider factors such as compatibility, durability, and the job’s specific needs.

The PSCL is a lightweight sheathing clip designed to brace unsupported sheathing edges without a rafter for support. It provides a 1/8″ gap to address shrinkage and expansion of roof sheathing. Fasteners for solid wood and plywood have strong holding power if the material is thick enough. For thinner walls, use robust fasteners like toggle or molly bolts or plastic anchors. Screws offer greater holding power and are easier to remove, but leave a larger hole in the wall. Plastic anchors or hardened masonry nails are the best choice for attaching to hard materials. Use a carbide-tipped masonry drill bit to predrill a hole for the fastener, then drill a smaller pilot hole first. • Amazon likes to pull the “You searched for the exact part number, but here’s something that is close enough to fool you” trick too. You have to be really careful with Amazon and eBay when ordering items like these. In the auto parts world, if you keep searching hard enough for the cheapest price you will very often end up finding the pot of crap at the end of the rainbow. That being said I’ve saved a ton of money over the dealer or local parts stores by shopping online.

  • I had the opposite problem with some of those clips once – they were too tight of a fit and they got stuck in the metal frame of the door panel. I was lazy and tried to use a screwdriver to pry them free instead of getting the appropriate tool and paid the price; screwdriver slipped and my hand flew into the door panel recess, taking the top off of my pinky finger on the sharp metal edge as it went past! Trip to emergency to get it stitched back on and I still have the scar to look at every time I see those clips… Moral of the story is; use the right tool for the job! 👍🏻
