What Does An Inside Guard Do?

The establishment of an interior guard is a command decision authorized to the commanding officer of a ship, regiment/group or higher, and separate/detached units. It is designed to preserve order, protect property, and enforce regulations within the jurisdiction of the command. Interior guards are distinguished from other types of guards employed to protect and defend tactical areas and from guards in riot duty and other special situations.

The interior guard guards everything from the perimeter of the installation or area of responsibility inward. The exterior guard guards all areas outside the installation that can be accessed. An interior guard is detailed by commanders of all military installations to preserve order, protect property, and enforce specific military regulations. The installation commander is responsible for the interior guard of the installation as a whole and prescribes the composition of the guard.

The elements of an interior guard include providing sentinel for security, prescribing regulation and special orders of the guard, receiving the report of the Officer of the Day, supervising the non-commissioned officer of the guard, maintaining cleanliness of the guard house and surroundings, posting relief at the proper time, and reporting from the guard in case of emergencies.

A regular interior guard of a post or unit whose principal duties are to patrol the area and protect personnel, buildings, and equipment is a main guard. It is manned 24/7, 365, with each soldier doing 24 hours of duty. Interior guards consist of the Commander of the Guard, the senior officer or NCO of the guard, next junior to the OD, and other members of the guard’s organization.

What does the guard position do?

The guard’s role is to protect the quarterback from incoming linemen during pass plays and create openings for running backs. They are considered ineligible receivers, meaning they cannot intentionally touch a forward pass unless it is to recover a fumble or is first touched by a defender or eligible receiver. In addition to speed blocking, guards can “pull” by running behind the other offensive linemen to engage a defensive player beyond the initial width of the offensive line.

This technique is used in most playbooks for outside runs and counter plays, with Dan McGugin being credited with first pulling guards. While tackles can pull, this strategy is less common as they are too far away to pull to the opposite side of the formation for counter plays and have the responsibility of blocking the outside defender for outside runs. Pulling is a unique responsibility for guards.
